I didn't know that the Ultimate Warrior was much-known at that point.

How did he get over before then?

He finally got his big break in late 1987 when he was signed by the WWF. Vince McMahon originally wanted the Ultimate Warrior to be known just as Warrior, but the Warrior chose to add "Ultimate" with it. When Paul Orndorff left the WWF in early 1988, it gave the Warrior his first major push as he filled in for Orndorff and feuded with Hercules. This led to a WrestleMania IV match pitting the Ultimate Warrior against Hercules, which the Warrior won. Promoters began to take notice of the Warrior's immense popularity (similar to Goldberg's popularity today) and gave him and Intercontinental title shot at SummerSlam '88, filling in for an "injured" Brutus Beefcake. The Warrior took full advantage of the opportunity and won the Intercontinental title from the Honky Tonk Man in a record breaking 91 seconds (to this day, no one has been able to win the Intercontinental title in that time). The Warrior would continue to feud with the Honky Tonk Man after SummerSlam and dominated the Elvis Presley clone in subsequent rematches.

Beat up Bobby Heenan and put him in a Weasel suit.

For fun at parties, randomly break out a classic nonsensical Warrior promo, and revel in the shocked faces thereafter.

Everyones hate for HTM as champ (good hate, not Xpac hate) just made the moment awesome and put Warrior in the #2 or 3 slot on the babyface side. Before then he just beat up JTTS in 1:00 or less.

The match barely lasted 30 seconds. How did he clock 1:31?

Warrior flailing his arms like a moron for a good 20 seconds right after a clothesline certainly helped.

From the moment he hits the ring to the pinfall it's about 90 seconds, the whole "it took 30 seconds" deal is just a way of saying it was real fast.

I'd like to see Bradshaw take a hill with rocks and sticks, though I'd be afraid where he'd stick them.

Hmmm....I always assumed everyone saying it was half a minute never actually counted. I don't remember a beel ringing, but the crowd went crazy when Warrior attacked HTM I didn't notice.
