Firefly on DVD

Recommended Posts

Well, from what we know:

Book can fight.

Book is "street-wise".

Book knows a lot about ships.

Book is important.

I'm thinking Book was a major in the Alliance army, but became religious after the war since he felt so guilty about doing the various things he did.

That's the most likely (see "cliched") version.

As for Inara, I can't imagine her being gone for more than a season. Have her come back at the finale to make a big cliffhanger or something.

I read this in an interview and Cappy also brings it up in the Serenity commentary....

Says Fillion, "I think that everyone in Mal's crew has personality qualities that he has had and then lost and that is most evident in Kaylee. She is this bright, sparkly thing. She is Hope. She is always looking for the pleasant side of any situation and has a lust for life and an excitement for the new and the strange. I think she brings out a quality in Mal that means whilst he may not share her excitement, he can enjoy hers. She is a very important part of not only keeping the ship in the air but also keeping Mal human."

So who do you think the other 3 are???

(I SO called Nathan Fillion "Cappy" - shuddup, you love it)

Jayne is Mal's tender side...no really.

I watched the new Angel last night and...and...well...it wasn't Firefly!

Oh, I remembered.

Inara = Mal's comforting side. We see in the opening of Serenity Mal taking a more nurturing approach to a soldier saying that they're not going to die because god won't let pretty people die... when that soldier dies, Mal doesn't even react - he becomes cold. Inara represents the warmer side of the former Mal.

Jayne represents the wilder side. In "The Message" we see Mal go a lil crazy in the flashback "Here I am, come and get me". Current Mal is a lot more reserved and calculated and won't take that many dumbass risks - he's too worried. This is best represented when Jayne calls him a coward after backing out of the deal with Badger in Serenity.

... and then there's book and kaylee as the other 4.

Also, in Serenity, I LOOOOOVED how River reacted to 2 things. At first I didn't really "get" it, but after watching the whole show it makes sense. Her being afraid of the Medical Room wasn't because Kaylee was shot (as I originally thought it was), it was because she has a natural fear of them because she was operated on by the Blue Sun corp. And another is when she was afraid of the gun - at first I thought it's because guns kill and hurt and that's why she's afraid of it... but then after Ariel I realized it's because they trained her to become a killer and that's why she's afraid of them - because she associates guns with the BSC.

Wow RRR, it seems you have watched FireFly about 10 times already. I haven't even finished the series yet, I still have the last three episodes.

I do like the series, but I don't like it as much as Angel or Buffy. I just didn't get into, maybe it is because I am not a big fan of the whole western genre.

At first, the little ching of the guitar with the western sound was pretty annoying, but I got used to it over time.

MOOOOOOOLE!!!!!!!!!!

The success of this thread is dependant on you liking the show!! You, leader of posts in Buffy and Angel, YOU, MOLE!

No pressure though...

And I watched Objects in Space again yesterday w/ commentary, and all the featurettes, and then I watched them again today (the featurettes, not OIS).

Yes yes, I know my Buffy and Angel posts had man me the man in Whedonverse, but I can only do so much.

Once I finish you and I can be geeks and discuss the series anytime you want.

Pinky promise, but only if you actually watch Angel when it is on. None of this "I watched Firefly, for the 10th time, so I'll just catch the repeat on Space" stuff.

Something I found that made me weep (not literally...but damn it all...FUCK FOX):

Stolen from another site:

"On a related note, from another forum:

Fox's new Friday night lineup premiered this past Friday, and this is what the Futon Critic had to say about it ratings-wise:

"As expected, FOX's new Friday lineup arrived with a thud as the bows of "Wanda at Large" (4.1/7), "Luis" (3.3/6) and "Boston Public" (4.3/7) finished a combined fourth place for the night in the metered markets. All three were off a total of 31% from last year's fall openers of "Firefly" (4.9/8 on 9/20/02) and "John Doe" (6.8/12 on 9/20/02) with "Wanda" and "Boston" both posting their least watched first-run episodes to date. Among adults 18-49, "Wanda" (1.9) and "Luis" (2.0) finished dead last among the four major networks while "Boston" snagged a third place finish (2.3) according to fast national data. A year ago "Firefly" and "John Doe" won the night in the key demographic. Yes kids, it's the start of a long year for FOX on Friday nights."

So Firefly beats that darling of Fox, Boston Public, in the same time slot. Heck John Doe did even better."

FUCK FOX.

Did any one DL the convention MP3??? I thought there was a lot of great stuff in that and it adds to the backstory.

The Earth was going to shit, the 2 superpowers -China and US- worked together to find a way to terriform other planets and therefore an alliance was made and the cultures merged (over the span of 500 years). The Alliance wanted to bring all the planets together so that everyone can share in the good life (sounds a bit like capitalism - no coincidence then that Blue Sun is a major player.)

As for my concerns with River, Joss said that she'd grow to carry on a normal conversation, but would never be normal like Fred.

China, a superpower?

But Joss is really a smart man and I am really pissed I didn't give the show a chance at first.

Boston Public.

Joss said that if it were up to him, he'd pick Japan (which is funny, cause it was up to him :) - but he said he loved Japanese culture and the language was a lil bit easier ), but China has 1 billion + and is being poised as being the next big thing on the planet earth (lots of corporations are putting headquarters in China - or so I hear). 1 Billion + consumers ready to sell to... like kids in a candy store are big business.

That makes sense then.

Where does Joss come up with these ideas? I am sure he has PLENTY brewing in his head now, he's just saving them for later or something.

Well, he wanted to do a show that took place in the future.

But he didn't want it to be like Star Trek.

He's a big fan of westerns.

He merged the two together and decided on the right mix.

He looked at today's world and how it was going and where it was going.

He also wrote parts of Titan A.E. - a story about what would the human race do after the earth blew up.

Thank GoD he didn't make it like Star Trek. Even though I like some sci-fi and horror shows, Star Trek has done nothing for me.

And Titan A.E. did horrible in the box-office. Its budget was $75 million and only made $22 million.

Ben Edlund, who also wrote some of Titan A.E., wrote "Jaynestown" and was a producer for Firefly. Plus, he wrote "Sacrifice,"Just Rewards," and "Life of the Party for Angel.
