The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 What was he going to be able to add to it? It's not like it's a series of episodes...it's a movie. I'm more comfortable with Joss writing and directing than anyone else.
Mole 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 Tim added a lot to the series, just like he added a lot to Angel, season 3.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 But that's individual episodes and storyline writing for over the coarse of TWENTY TWO HOURS. We're talking about a 2 hour film. Tim didn't create the series, or the characters. Joss brought him on board. So I ask again...what is he going to be able to add to the film?
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 Well, he wrote Out of Gas.
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 Plus, even if Minear wrote bits and pieces of the script, I think it would add a lot. Remember, Joss and Tim co-wrote "The Message", which was a great, great episode.
dubq 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 The article said that it's done "6 months after" the last episode, but then it talks about the film being about Simon and River getting on the ship. Actually, it says "two passengers on board the ship who cause trouble for the crew." Which means they were already aboard..
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 But it also says this: The film centers on a veteran captain of a galactic war, who, with a small crew, rents out his ship, Serenity, for the purposes of transport-for-hire and pulling off small crimes. When the captain takes on two new passengers, he soon learns that they are hotly pursued fugitives from the coalition controlling the universe. A whole host of trouble follows for the captain and his fearless crew, as they find themselves the prey of evil forces that they are ill equipped to evade. I think that's just providing a synopsis of the show. It'd be stupid to have Simon and River magically come onto the ship for the first time again; they were just describing the show in a nutshell. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2004 Yes, however the introduction of the two characters is an integral plot point; The Train Job did a poor job of doing that so I can easily see Joss doing it again for the purpose of the movie.
dubq 0 Report post Posted March 8, 2004 Yes, however the introduction of the two characters is an integral plot point; The Train Job did a poor job of doing that so I can easily see Joss doing it again for the purpose of the movie. Personally, I'm glad I got to see the show [via the DVDs] with Serenity as the pilot, instead of the Train Job. A MUCH better way to start the series, IMO! RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 16, 2004 interesting that there is no Book. Comments? Probably (hopefully) still in negotiations. Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2004 I find it interesting because the guy who played Book (can't think of his name right now, and I lent my DVD's to my friend) seemed to really like playing the role from what I gathered from the DVD's. But like Rudo said, maybe he's still in negotiations.
Hank Kingsley 0 Report post Posted March 17, 2004 Ron Glass (Book) has been around forever. I was watching War Stories with my mom this weekend (I got her into Buffy and Angel, so I was planning to do the same with Firefly) and she immediately recognized him from "Barney Miller" ages ago. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2004 Holy Crap. I was watching Ariel and something I never really thought about occured to me. Inara had her yearly physical. She had mentioned being on the ship for almost a year in Bushwacked. So, it would be reasonable to assume that she went on board Firefly right after having her last physical. She also said "we're all running from something" in, I believe, Bushwacked as well (it may have been "safe"). THUS adding more 'proof' to the "Inara has a terminal disease and has a short time to live." theory. Serenity was also referred to (though I am forgetting which episode) as a "place where journeys end/where you go when your journey has ended", or something to that effect. I had a theory, which I didn't want to expand upon here because it's crazy, that Serenity was a ghost ship. Not a literal ghost ship, but rather, one that lost souls clung to - or rather, clung to Mal and his strength to carry on. It's an interesting theory, the theme song lends itself to that... "Take me out, to the black, tell em I ain't coming back" - which could be used both literally (space being black) and metaphorically (Death = Darkness), and the "I ain't coming back" is pretty self-explanitory. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2004 I've been lurkin around the Fireflyfans.net message board and came up with these two: Since Variety is by subscription only, I"m posting the whole thing: 'Firefly' feature alights Whedon project jumps from Fox TV to bigscreen By GABRIEL SNYDER Last month, Universal greenlit "Serenity," a feature based on Joss Whedon's TV show "Firefly," which Fox canceled in 2002 after airing only 11 episodes. The film biz is filled with adaptations of hit TV series, such as "Charlie's Angels" and "Starsky & Hutch." But it's rare when a feature is based on a nonhit, such as the six-episode "Naked Gun" and the never-aired-pilot "Mulholland Dr." In each of those cases, the pics featured the original contributors of series -- and went on to significant bigscreen success. "Serenity" is hoping to similarly rewrite the TV-to-film rules. But then, breaking the rules is familiar territory to Whedon, who created the series and will direct the film. Five years after the 1992 film "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" opened to ho-hum box office, he used the material to create a TV show that became a seven-year hit and even spawned a spinoff, "Angel." Now he's reversing that process with "Serenity." While Universal's decision may seem like an eyebrow-raiser, it's closer to a no-brainer: The risk is modest, and the rewards could be plentiful. With a first-time director and no pricey stars (Adam Baldwin, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher), the pic is a bargain, particularly for a sci-fi actioner: under $40 million. Most of it will be shot on stages on the U lot. The handful of locations will be in the L.A. area. In addition, "Firefly" has a loyal fan base. A number of Internet fan sites, such as CHUD.com continue to dissect "Firefly," follow Whedon's career and swap series action figures. "If you strike a chord with fans of science-fiction adventure, they're never going away," Whedon says. This would seem to ensure a built-in audience for "Serenity" at the box office and afterward. The "Firefly" DVD has sold a surprising 200,000 copies since it was released last December. (The release fortuitously came out while U execs were debating greenlighting the pic.) Underlying the deal was U's desire to be in business with Whedon. His shingle, Mutant Enemy, has an exclusive television deal with Fox and no motion picture deal. U execs, particularly vice chair Mary Parent, had been trying to figure out a way to work with Whedon for years. Fox had touted "Firefly" for its 2002 season as a show that could potentially fill the sci-fi gap in its sked created by the end of the aging "X-Files" franchise. The concept was to set an ensemble of characters familiar from Westerns (the noble outlaw, the hard-scrabble preacher, the practical prostitute) in outer space 500 years in the future. But just 11 of the 14 "Firefly" episodes produced made it to air. Interrupted by baseball and dropped for November sweeps (much to Whedon's chagrin), the show never caught on with a big enough audience to justify its 8 p.m. Friday slot (the show averaged a 2.1 rating and a 7 share; it also briefly ran at 9 p.m.). Just before Christmas, Fox pulled the plug, using "Fastlane," which would itself later be yanked, as a replacement. After the cancellation, Whedon sat down with Chris Buchanan, the president of his production company, and his longtime agent Chris Harbert of CAA and started brainstorming how they could keep the project alive. Per-episode production costs were high. They mulled cable and tossed around the idea of a miniseries. The very last idea on their list was turning to a movie studio to make a feature version. So Universal stepped in, purchased "Firefly" rights from Fox and gave it a greenlight. Thus, U and Whedon are fulfilling the fantasy of every TV writer who has had a show canned after just a few episodes. "You have no idea what this means to writers," Whedon says. "You took something you love and you got a second shot. Do you know how often that happens to writers? Never."
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2004 I really love this one. It brought a smile to my face and I did a lil dance in my chair. I hope Joss reads this!!!! STATIC Murphy's Second Law of Combat: If your attack is going particularly well, you've walked into an ambush. I know that a couple of people who are not real thrilled that some of us soldier-type guys shout out firefly-isms during combat, and I can honestly understand that. However, I hope that Joss and Tim read this and find it inspiring, and I hope that everyone feels their guts knot up as much as I did. . .and maybe a tear or two will well up in your eyes, as they are streaming down my face just from the telling of this. . . As you all know, I've been a soldier stationed in Afghanistan for quite some time now. Many of you know that I'm posting this from my own home tonight, as I have been permitted to come home for ten days on leave. It's been a very long time since I've been home. I flew from Afghanistan to Frankfurt via military cargo jet (C-17 for those 'in the know'), and the next morning, we got on a commercial flight to Chicago. I got off the plane, grabbed my big-assed duffel bags and prepared to wait in line for customs, and to my delight, the Customs officers were pulling any soldier-types out of line and passing them through, with a pat on the back and a 'welcome home'. I immediately had to re-check my bags for my final flight, and after doing so, I made a beeline outside. I crossed the street and walked into the snow, the first I'd seen since January 2003, and stood at the base of the American Flag for a second before I finally became overwhelmed and fell to my knees. I grabbed a double handful of snow and rubbed it all over my face. When I stood up, I realized there were almost 20 other soldiers with me, all who had the same idea. Most of us didn't know each other at all, but for that moment, we were brothers who had been best of friends all our lives. We decided to head on inside, and one young man, his name was Mike, was still overwhelmed with emotion and could not stand. Another soldier, a friend of his, went to lift Mike, and I took Mike's other arm. Mike smiled weakly and thanked us. Here's where it gets tough to even tell the story, and I hope Joss and Tim read this. . . Mike's friend said, "You know the saying, Mikey. . .when you can't run anymore you crawl. . ." and before he could say anymore, I finished it for him. "And when you can't do that anymore, you find someone to carry you." Mike and his buddy, and about half the guys who were standing there with us all smiled. We looked up at the flag and Mike said, "They didn't take the sky from us." Turns out they were all Browncoats, and they were home from Iraq for good. Joss, Tim and all the rest of you. . .I don't know if you had any idea that what you created would be so powerful, and provide such inspiration for those of us who serve, but it does. Thank you. And to all of you whom I've come to call my friends on this site, thank YOU. Because of your love and support, the 'bad guys' are unable to take the sky from ME. I'M HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!1111 Shifting this here from the Firefly 3 thread. Don’t know if this has been posted and I can’t vouch for the veracity of the claim but I got this from another board I frequent. Just posting as I found it: I was working with Nathan Fillion who plays the captain of the firefly. He told me some really cool stuff that is being done in the movie. SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! 1. I don’t watch the show but Nathan told me you can expect to see what the bad guys really look like. Apparently you’ve only heard, but never seen them in the show. 2. It is super action oriented. In one scene, straight out of The Searchers, the villians are destroying a local town and killing everyone. There is a small boy and mother running for their lives and the crew of the Firefly have to leave without them. As they pull away in there landspeeder. Nathan pulls out his gun and shoots both the mother and the boy to keep them from tortured. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! It's nothing major, but it could be considered a spoiler, it just warms my heart to hear it. It's so good.
