RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Yeah, someone at the Firefly convention asked Ben and Josh about Titan A.E. I like Star Trek, and I was watching Nemesis the other day (not a great movie by any stretch), and I was noticing how they filmed it and how it was very smooth and I couldn't help but laugh. Guest Goodear Report post Posted January 27, 2004 The Show Favourite Episode: 1. Serenity - The fact that they didn't air this thing of beauty to start off the series is what screwed the series up. I KNOW that strting off with the Train Job screwed up the watching base... since it screwed me up. DAMN IT. 2. Jaynestown 3. Objects in Space Favourite Moment: 1. Jayne gets a hat from his mom. I always though Jayne was a bit two-dimensional and HE IS. I just love the way they add complexity to him by coninuing to simplify his attitudes. See the ending dialouge between him and Mal at the end of Jaynestown for similar. 2. Mal and Wash tlak out their problems right in the middle of being totured eventually deciding that Mal has to sleep with Zoe to get the tension out of their relationship. 3. River's reaction to Book's hair. Can't argue with that. The Cast Favourite Character: 1. SIMON: God I love Simon in a happy, not such a sexy way. He's a great strait man AND a great comedic figure on his own. I route for this guy all the time, with the thing with River, the relationship with Kaylee, the verbal sparring thing he has going with everyone. He's my boy. 2. MAL: Mal is the freaking quintesential captain in my eyes. He knows when to push, prod, hold back, WHATEVER it takes to get shit done. The motivation sessions during Out of Gas are priceless. 3. Kaylee: Fuck it, she's cute like a button. When she feels bad, I feel bad. When she's happy, I'm happy. That's not freaking right, but its true. Favourite Villain: 1. NISKA - Oh yeah old man with glasses fucking your shit up with the torture. I loved the psuedo-Russian accent thing and just how fucked-up-grampa vibe just kept working it. And he was HAPPY THAT WAY! No inner turmoil for Niska. EVIL EVIL EVIL! 2. Early: I got the impression Early was a part of the River program myself but I might be looking too much into it. But the thing with Kylee was just freaking wrong and uncomfortable and gave me willies. And then he fucked up Book and that wasn't cool either. 3. The Reavers: Damn I needed more Reavers. They were everywhere the first couple of episodes and then went away :-( But just the "OMG FREAKING REAVERS!" reaction of everyone that had actually seen them was classic. And the ship chase that led to the Crazy Ivan was BOMB ASS DIGGITY. 4. Saffron is a little low here since I think the return visit took a little away from her initial appearance. That would have worked so much better a season later... :-( Favourite Hottie (aka: The Jenny Calendar Memorial Award for Achievement in The Field of "That Funny Feelin Down In My Pants".): 1. Kaylee 2. Neena from Heart of Gold 3. Saffron
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I was watching The Message again today, and the opening scene with Kaylee is Simon is fucking awesome in everyway possible. Simons reactions; the joy and embarrassment all at the same time - he is able to convey so many emotions effectively - and Kaylees reactions and reaction to his comment are very well done (Kaylee does rule at that), and Zoe and Wash's jabs at the end were icing on the cake. "Oh my god, it's hiddeous, it's grotesque, HEY and there's something in the jar" "Why, is there any one you ARE good at talking to?" This was probably the best Gina Torres performance in the series. And the more I watch the Message, the more I love it. "The Message" itself was touching and relevant, and how they weaved it and developed it throughout the show was smartly done. When Jayne said to Book "would you pray over me after I die" (something to that effect), it was kinda tugged at the heart; especially after he got the hat. He knows he ain't gonna live a long life, so why complicate things? Keep it simple: Sex, Money, Power. When things disturb that balance, when he is forced to look inward, that's when his real character shines through. I think this was the most telling episode of Book's former character. He recognized the Cop's "wings" and where they came from. He knew the placement and distance to and from key points and how the system worked. Add this to the Alliance seeing him as an VIP and him knowing how to handle himself, and you got yourself a former (high ranking) soldier or some sort. Mole 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 How many times have you seen the whole series?
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I don't know about him...but I've seen every ep at least 3 times (then with commentary for those that have them)...and I've watched Out of Gas probably 5 times. That's a result of watching them the first time through when I got them, then once again with my girlfriend, then again with my best friend.
RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I've seen Serenity 10 times (lost count, rough estimate. +/- 2) That's because I've introduced it to 3 people seperately, and watched it again with Commentary with one of them.. then there was the original airing on Space, and a re-run on space. So really, it's like 4 or 5 times alone. The Message I've seen 4 times. I've only watched Heart of Gold once. I've watched Objects in Space 4 times. War stories, 4 or 5 times. Trash, 2 or 3 times. Our Mrs. Reynolds, 2 or 3 times. Train Job, 3 or 4 times. Bushwhacked - 2 or 3 times. Safe I've seen 2 or 3 times. Shindig I've seen 3 or 4 times. Jaynestown I've seen twice. Really, gone through the entire series once - but if I watch heart of gold twice, it would be like 2 or 3 times.
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I don't know about him...but I've seen every ep at least 3 times (then with commentary for those that have them)...and I've watched Out of Gas probably 5 times. That's a result of watching them the first time through when I got them, then once again with my girlfriend, then again with my best friend. The girl who I am working it with, wouldn't like Firefly at all. There is only one person, my suitemate Brad, who I could get to watch the show. That is because he is REALLY into sci-fi stuff. He still plays Magic, for example.
The Ghost of bps21 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 I've logged enough time watching Antique's Road Show and Trading Spaces to force her to watch Firefly! Actually...she liked it anyway.
Mole 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2004 Hmm...very good point. I was talking to her today and I asked her how is she going to watch Sex and the City since we don't have HBO? She said I could watch it with her because I watch the show. Of course she mis-heard me because I said I HAVE watched the show, a few times, but I don't watch it everyweek. I'll tell her I'll watch Sex and the City if she watches either Firefly, Buffy or Angel.

Lord of The Curry 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2004 Where do I start? First off, major props needs to given in the direction of RRR for turning me on to what is, without question, one of the finest tv shows that I've ever seen. This world that Joss Whedon has created is an amazing feat. This isn't some half-assed federation or Star Wars-esque universe. The cultures, planets and characters are 100% believeable, probably because they're normal people. Each character has different relationships w/ the other crew members and they did an excellent job of creating backstory. Just a fucking marvelous thing. Mal- What the world needs now is Nathan Fillion. Aside from his two minute stint in Saving Private Ryan I had no clue as to who he was. Now I can't get enough. Mal Reynolds is, IMO, one of the most well written leading characters in tv, today or any other day. He's a fighter, a thinker, a bastard, a joker, a player and an all around kick-ass leader. Mal's struggle isn't overtly complicated or disjointed and it's something we all can relate to: To be free. When I saw the way he stood up to Jayne at the dinner table and ordered him out, I was hooked. Have been since, will be forever. Zoe- It would've been easier for Joss to write Zoe as a "sexy but strong fighter" but he chose a different route. Not to say Gina Torres isn't hot, because she is, but not in the "I'd hit it in a heartbeat" kinda way. Her loyalty to Mal is unquestioned, seconded only to her love of Wash. I marked out like crazy when I found out that it was Zoe who ordered the ship to turn around in Out of Gas. The backstory w/ her and Mal's relationship in the war is some of my favorite stuff in the whole series. Wash- MORE~! MORE MORE MORE~! HIS IS AN EEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL LAUGH~! Oh, God bless Wash. Delicious comic relief with an understated seriousness that shines through in War Stories. What I dig about Wash is that he carries around a quiet confidence about him. He's secure in his abilities as a pilot and knows that he's got a wife who would go to the end of the universe and back for him. Wash and Mal's convo about Zoe in War Stories is one of my favorite scenes. Jayne- DICK~! DICKERY~! MORE DICKERY~! Jayne rules because he leaves no secrets about who he is and what he treasures in life. We all love Jayne because we know that deep down there is some good in him. Maybe it's buried way deep down, but it's there. I get the feeling that Jayne cares for the crew more then he'll ever let on because he's got to uphold his rep as the badass. Kaylee- My obsession w/ Jewel Staite grows daily in a way that scares me. So fucking beautiful. But yeah, Kaylee is a fun character, even if her endless enthusiasm does get a tad annoying at times. Her best work comes out in the scenes w/ Simon, great emotions and facial expressions here. Kaylee is very much the mother figure of Serenity and treats everybody like family and she's always around to bring people back to reality if things get out of hand. Inara- Of all the people whose characters I want to know more about, Inara finishes second only to Mal. Why did she leave a lucrative and powerful position on the core planets? It's something that I may never know and that's something that pisses me right the fuck off. If I were to use a Star Trek metaphor here, Inara would be the Counsellor Troy of Serenity. Her empathy and compassion for all the crew members (even Jayne) is enviable and that whole unspoken love thing between her and Mal is pretty damn fine too. Plus she's a fox. Simon- My second favorite character in the whole show next to Mal. I'm a big mark for fish-out-of-water characters and Simon is a great one. I find it incredibly noble and brave that he abondoned a seemingly perfect life because he loves his little sister to death. The characters transformation from untrusting nerd to the strong doctor we see at the end is fuckin awesome. I'd place him at a tie w/ Mal for most well-acted character, too. River- Much respect should be given to Summer Glau (I LOVE that name!) for making the most out of a limited role. Her facial expressions are top-notch and she can tell a story with just her eyes. Of all the characters on the show, I think that if the show had continued that River showed the most promise in terms of storyline advancement. We only saw the tip of the iceberg. And her reaction to Book's hair is the greatest shit ever. EVER. Book- Fuck Fox. Fuck them for not renewing this show. Fuck them for not understanding this shows beauty. And FUCK THEM because you KNOW that somewhere down the road we would've found out some seriously fucking wicked-ass stuff regarding Book's past. The scene where Book tells the alliance officer to check out his i.d card plants the seeds for what could've been an amazing storyline and I'm bitter beyond words that I won't see it continute. And the fro. Dear God the fro. If my hair ever becomes a tenth of that, I'll be happy. I'll post my thoughts on the episodes later on, but yeah..........beautiful show. Mole 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2004 Okay, RRR, here is my list. Even though I haven't seen the last three episodes.... Favourite Episode: 1. Ariel 2. Out of Gas 3. Jaynestown Favourite Moment: 1. When Jayne sees the statue of himself, and is shocked to why the hell they had a statue of him. 2. In "Out of Gas" when everyone is just sitting around the table bullshittin with eachother. 3. When Simon saves the guys life in "Ariel." I just found that soooo touching. Favourite Line/Lines: 1. Wash: "Everything looks good from here... (beat...playing with plastic dinosaurs over his console) Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive." (as Stegosaurus) "We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land'." (as T-Rex) "I think we should call it...your grave!" (Stegosaurus) "Ah, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!" (T-Rex) "Ha ha HA! Mine is an evil laugh...now die!" 2. River: I can kill you with my brain. 3. Jayne: I'll be in my bunk Favourite "Shot" 1. In "Out of Gas" when Mal falls on the ground at the beginning of the episode. 2. When the guy is trying to sell Mal a ship, and he sees Serenity. The look on his face is classic, and I just love the way they capture it. 3. In "Ariel" Jayne is looking through the window, with that funny as look on his face. The Cast Favourite Character: 1. Jayne: The first time Jayne talked, I loved everything about him. He reminds me so much of Spike; the fact he only really cares about himself but at the same time cares for other things. Plus the fact he is funny as shit. 2. Mal: He was one of the best charcters all around. He had so much depth to him and there was so much more we needed to learn about him. The way he feels about his ship, always looking for a way to make money no matter what the cost, his humor and the fact he is such a badass. 3. Book: Book was the back bone of Serenity. Throughout the series, he was the voice of reason. Even though he was old, he still had lots of growing to do. Favourite "Guest" Character: 1. Saffron ("Mrs. Reynolds"):(stealing this from you RRR) The way she acted in "Mrs. Reynolds" was gold. She was a great character and a great con-artist. 2. I think think of his name, but the guy who wore the hat and the tie without the shirt. I just loved him. 3. Awwww, don't know. Favourite Villain: 1. The Reavers: There was so much mystery behind them, and they were the only villians Mal was too afraid to fight with. 2. The Blue Hand Men: They remind me so much of the Gentlemen from "Hush," which were some of my favorite villians from Buffy. Plus the fact they had so much mystery behind them. 3. Saffron: She was the only person who got to Mal. She wasn't so much of a badass, but a smart villian. I like smart villians the best. Favourite Hottie (aka: The Jenny Calendar Memorial Award for Achievement in The Field of "That Funny Feelin Down In My Pants".): 1. Saffron: Redhead, nuff said. 2. Inara: Sexy, sexy, sexy. 3. Kaylee: She wasn't the "sterotypical" hottie. I just found her to be so damn cute. HAPPY RRR??? This all came from memory too...

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted January 30, 2004 I'd love to post a FireFly review (preferably episode reviews); I was going to do one for this board anyways. Well if you're interested in doing it for Scorror.com PM me. It would fit in better over there, since we're a site for sci-fi and horror. Did you make a list El??? No I didn't pay enough attention to when it was shown on Fox to do a list. I paid enough attention to know it was a quality show, but I knew it would be cancelled so I didn't bother getting attached to it. I'd have to see the DVD to do a list. RavishingRickRudo 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2004 A message from Joss... joss - Jan 25, 2004 11:56:02 am PST #4374 of 4375 Mark "What's the rumpus?" Hey guys. Sorry to go wildly off-topic (and bring up Firefly), but I need a favor. I tried to post something on Fireflyfans.net discussion about "Fireflygasms" (no, it's not as shippery as it sounds.) Anyhoo, I can't seem to log in, 'cause I work the computer like I'm wearing Strongbad's gloves and I really wanted to post something there. So I'm gonna write it out here and hope 'n' pray (to the meaningless void) that one of y'all will be kind enough to kick it over to that thread. Okay then: ______________________ Dear fan type postguys -- Checking in to say: Rough @%&$#ing week. Trying to work the movie deal, juggling so many balls and dropping them all, basically ending the week going, "I'm done. I'm tapped. Last man down, I don't even think I can do this." Then I hap on this thread, hear all those kick moments and all y'all cooing over them, and I remember why I'm fighting so hard. So when you here dorky sounding things like "The fans' support kept us going", know that on occasion it is not only literally but very specifically true. As in, today. Thanks already. And, more importantly: -- Inara on the bed in Mal's room saying "I just hit my head is all". Deep funny. -- River on the railing. Batgirl! -- "Little man Loooved fire." -- "They were little geisha dolls with big heads that wobbled!" "People LOVE those!" Kai made me rewind that four times. -- "Dear Diary. Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy." -- "Have you ever been with a warrior woman?" -- "She ain't moving." When you think Kaylee's talking about Zoe and realize she means Serenity. And every time the lights first flicker in that show I've forgotten what ep I'm in and I get very worried. -- The part where the crew finds out about River's REAL... oh wait. That's the movie. Never mind. Or mind in a while. Thanks again. -j.
Guest Goodear Report post Posted January 30, 2004 -- "Dear Diary. Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy." AWESOME. That was such the great line while everyone else is all checking in on Zoe and Jayne does exactly what he does and rifles through all their crap. It was glorious. It would have only been better if Simon came back and found Jayne wearing the sunglasses that Simon wore in the pilot.
