College Football....

Recommended Posts

Guest Ghettoman

I try, I like football, I don't really have a team outside of state pride, so I figure I'm sure to like college football. I've tried for a while now to get into it, but even today my reasons why I haven't become brighter.

I'm watching I believe the post-discussion of the USC/Michigan(if im wrong correct me) game, and there talking about how USC should be national champs, and how the coaches will vote on who the national champ is....ok.....but wait! There on the ticker goes a thing for the upcoming Oklahoma vs LSU(again if I'm wrong on them correct me) game, and see there the No 1 and No 2 ranked teams.....hmmm...

I just don't get it. If a game doesn't determine who wins it all, what the hells the point!?

I'm sure there's some logic to this all out there somewhere, so please, sell me on college football and the bowl system.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this.

But I think that college football was originally just an exhibition for the kids to play football and show off there skills.

So they played the bowl games as kind of a reward at the end. But because the media has to have a national champion to everything they started bringing it up and deciding national champions.

Now it's exploded into what it is now.

I'm sure back in the day when college football was first coming around this wasn't intended.

Hence Army, Navy, Notre Dame, and tons of small schools officially being National Champions that no longer have a shot in hell of winning. Well, except ND.

Personally, College Football is losing me fast. I still love Div II and the smaller games, but these "big games" just don't matter to me anymore.

It used to be I would have been willing to dish out major cash to go to a bowl game. And now, I wouldn't even think about it.

As for LSU vs OU is #1 vs #2....that's in the BCS standings, not the coaches and AP poll. In both of those, it's #2 vs #3. Course, after the game USC will be #1 in the AP but #2 in the BCS I THINK (god, if they finish #3 in the coaches poll...sweet lard) and the winner of the Sugar Bowl will be #1.

Course, as bad as this year is, it's not as bad as two years ago when #4 Nebraska (who didn't make the Big 12 title game) become #2 in the BCS despite being #4 in both polls while Oregon and Colorado (who were #2 and #3) played each other while Miami slaughtered the Huskers in a joke title game. Which essentially became the first step in my dislike for the BCS system. And the BCS still isn't as bad as the days of the AP by itself, but that wouldn't have been bad if the bowls weren't highjacked by conferences.

But to get back to the point, most of us don't know what the point of the Sugar Bowl is anymore. It's just another bowl game now. Whoever wins is split National Champion, it's just USC is celebrating first.

Well damn, at least I'm not alone in my dislike and confusion.

I just can't get into a game or a season when there's no payoff game or series.

The main reason I'm into college football is because I go to a college with a decent team. I don't think I would have started to care nearly as much if I couldn't go to 6 games a year for free and have my own team to root for.

Yeah I like football but I really latched on b/c of school support. Because I go to OU.

But this was the way my parents, die hard NFL fans put it. "This is just to complicated. There are to many outside factors and to many people that decide. It needs to be left up to humans or computers. You can't let both decide because they're going to disagree and then we're going to have what we have now. Course the computer can't hurl childish insults."

I thought college football originally just started as a game between Penn State...and someone else? And then it started growing. Were they calling themselves the national champions after that game?

Yes.

Sad as that is, yes they were.

Penn State didn't even start playing football until 1887.

Well then who were the first two to have that game? Dammit.........*looks it up*

Ah-ha! November 6, 1869 at New Brunswick, New Jersey. Princeton vs. Rutgers.

The first college football game.

Not to mention the only way to put in a playoff system of say.. the top 6-8 teams would be to probably shorten the regular season by at least a game considering 2 teams would be playing an extra 3-4 games.

Use the other bowls for the other teams. Only issue I see is that the Rose, Fiesta and Sugar Bowls are conference based (providing they aren't the rotation bowl for the BCS championship).

The problem is that football has unique situations from year to year. Some years, like 2 years ago with Miami, the old system was fine. Some years, like '94, a one game championship is ideal. And some years, like this one, a playoff series is ideal.

I don't see the problem with playing more games than expected or another team when it's on the way to a championship.
