WWE hosue show report 1-11 St. John's

by Shannon Patrick Sullivan

Match 1: Spike Dudley vs. Rene Dupree w/Rob Conway

Plenty of boos for La Resistance, whose theme music interrupted the

Canadian national anthem. Dupree got on the mic to further enflame the

crowd before Spike came charging out of the locker room. Good match which

the crowd really got into, with Dupree largely dominating. Finish came

when Spike got Dupree to run into Conway then rolled him up for the pin.

WINNER: Spike Dudley

Match 2: Lance Storm & Val Venis vs. Tomko & Fertig

Little reaction for Tomko & Fertig but, as usual, Newfoundland loves Lance

Storm. Val was in the ring first for his team, but the "We Want Lance"

chants got so loud he soon acquiesced and tagged in Storm. Tomko & Fertig

spent much of the match working on Val's knee, but the faces eventually

came back for the win.

WINNERS: Lance Storm & Val Venis

Match 3: Test vs Stevie Richards

No Victoria (damn), no Stacy (double damn). Unlike the other house shows

this weekend, Stevie was the face and Test was the heel, with Test getting

on the mic and running down Newfoundland to really get the heat on

himself. Match was okay; Richards won with the Steven kick.

WINNER: Steven Richards

Match 4: Molly Holly vs Jazz vs Lita vs Trish Stratus (Women's

Championship)

This was an elimination match, though it largely broke down into

one-on-one affairs. Match started off with Trish and Molly getting knocked

outside while Litz and Jazz got it on in the ring. Lita dominated until

Molly recovered, giving Jazz a chance to sneak the Championship belt into

the ring. She nailed Lita with it and got the pin, eliminating Lita.

Almost right away, Trish finally recovered and got back into things,

eliminating Jazz. Match then came down to Trish vs Molly, with the champ

eventually retaining the belt via pinfall with her feet on the ropes.

WINNER and still Women's Champion: Molly Holly

Match 5: Batista vs The Hurricane

The crowd had a surprising pro-Evolution slant to it, which unfortunately

ended up kind of killing the heat in this one. Hurricane tried valiantly

until Randy Orton made the run-in, enabling Batista to pick up the win.

Oddly, post-match Orton picked up a chair as if he was going to go back

and attack Hurricane, but he and Batista then just walked away.

WINNER: Batista

Match 6: Dudley Boyz vs Garrison Cade & Mark Jindrak

Despite the advertising billing this as a tables match, it was actually

just a regular tag-team affair. The Dudleyz got a huge pop, and really

played to the crowd. At one point, Cade & Jindrak gave up and started to

head to the back but Bubba and D-Von dragged them back into the ring, and

finally picked up the pinfall victory. Cade & Jindrak then started to beat

up on the victors, bringing a table into the ring. Spike ran in for the

save, though, and instead it was Cade (I think) who got wood.

WINNERS: The Dudley Boyz

After the intermission, action picks up with...

Match 7: Randy Orton w/Batista vs Christian (Intercontinental

championship)

Crowd was pretty split between Orton and Christian, although Christian did

some good mic work to establish his position as face. This was a very good

match with a number of near falls; at one point, Christian had Orton down

for the three-count but Batista distracted the ref. Orton finally won with

the RKO, which Christian sold very well.

WINNER and still Intercontential Champion: Randy Orton

Match 8: Booker T vs Matt Hardy Version 1.0

Both Hardy and Booker got face pops, until Matt got on the stick and told

Booker that he was going to beat him just like Shawn Michaels beat Bret

Hart. Plenty of boos went in Hardy's direction after that. (It's surely no

coincidence that Earl Hebner -- who was getting huge heat all night -- was

the ref for this match.) Still, the match itself wasn't quite what I would

have expected from these two competitors, and I was a bit surprised at how

quickly Booker picked up the victory.

WINNER: Booker T

Match 9: Chris Jericho vs Kane

Huge pop for Y2J. Match was a lot of fun, with Jericho at one point

intentionally blinding the referee so that he couldn't count a pinfall

against him. Jericho brought a chair into the ring but Kane caught him,

and signalled for the tombstone piledriver onto the chair. Then Trish ran

in, distracting Kane. Kane went for the chokeslam on her, but Y2J snuck

in a low blow and rolled Kane up for the win.

WINNER: Chris Jericho

To close the show, Jericho and Trish stayed in the ring while Kane went to

the back. Jericho offered Trish a handshake, but she ended up giving him a

hug instead. They then bickered a bit about who should thank who for

saving them from Kane. Trish then inadvertently talked about looking

forward to bringing more 100% Stratusfaction guaranteed "the next time I'm

Halifax"... which of course brought on a chorus on boos (ahhh, it really

is a classic wrestler goof, isn't it?). Jericho picked up on it quickly

and corrected her that this was actually St John's, and more witty banter

ensued to finish things up.

Biggest Pops

1. Chris Jericho

2. Lance Storm

3. Dudley Boyz

4. Christian

Biggest Heat

1. Test (post-mic work)

2. Rene Dupree

3. Matt Hardy (post-mic)

Are WWE really wondering why house show business is down when they do dumb things like have Test vs. Richards (both heels), Dudleyz vs. Cade & Jindrak (both faces), and Orton vs. Christian (two heels). I can understand Jericho vs. Kane. Anyway, are those matches (heel vs. heel etc. not the dumbest thing you can do on a house show to kill a crowd? House shows are about formula wrestling and fun. JR must have been on crack when he scheduled these matches thinking they would 'send the folks home happy'.

I think its safe to say Richards is a tweener / face and Cade / Jindrak were heels last time I checked.

Orton / Christian though boggles the mind.

I think Test & Richards are involved or about to get involved in a feud. I recall Test giving the big boot to Victoria on RAW. Dudley Boyz & Jindrak & Cade have had revent encounters, on Raw, and remember they were in 4 way tag match for the match at the last PPV.

THey were in Canada, therefore, Christian and Jericho were put into top level matches against heels, since the WWE knew they were going to be mostly cheered. And Test and Richards have been feuding.

Anyone else notice how Lance Storm seems to be so inexplicably over in Eastern Canada? It seems every time they do a show there (house or TV) he gets a huge pop. Remember the Halifax RAW in May when he faced (and jobbed in 3 minutes) to Booker T?

Check out the location.

The weekend shows went through Oshawa, Halifax, and St. Johns - therefore Test, Christian, and Jericho would be working as default faces. Jericho has been working against Kane for the past few weeks on the house shows but from what I gathered the US crowd was pro Kane in those bouts.

Reading the online promo for the Oshawa show on the arena's website, they referred to Test as being one of the major attractions as he was born in that town.

Jindrak & Cade haven't been faces since November.

And like someone else said, House Shows are usuaslly test-runs for possible tag teams, heel turns or whatever.

Stevie is pretty much a face now, so him v. Test isn't too odd.

Garrison/Jindrak have been heels since like Survivor Series.

Christian/Orton because Orton defends against all comers?

Even though House Show's exist, they mean nothing, and in WWE's eyes, never happend (except the rare title change like Christian winning IC because Booker was injured).

So Kane's T.V. record is still flawless (unless he got DQed sometime)

Well, he asked about losses that included house shows. I answered him.

While I'm in this thread, I'll post these two house show reports. Both were about the Smackdown house show last night from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

This first one is from the Torch:

I attended the show with my best friend, my brother, and his friend and this easily surpassed my own expectations. We had a great time. The arena itself was probably only half full, but the crowd was hot and into the show all night long.

(1) Ultimo Dragon defeated Nunzio. Huge pop for Dragon, probably because he was the first wrestler out and Nunzio drew a ton of crowd heat. I was shocked, the fans were on him almost the entire match. They opened up with some nice mat wrestling and some basic holds before Nunzio bailed outside. Dragon then went on offense for a few minutes including some loud kicks that made me cringe. Eventually Nunzio took control, Ultimo made a big comeback and hit his finisher for the pin and big crowd reaction.

Chavo Guerrero came out next to massive heel heat and large "Eddie Eddie" chants accompanied him to the ring. Chavo grabbed the mic and delivered an excellent promo, telling the crowd that we can chant "Eddie" all we want to but he can't hear us from the hospital and that no wrestler from Mexico, the U.S. or Kalamazoo could defeat him. He also referred to himself as the Latin Savior. Rey Mysterio's music hit and he came out and everyone in the building was standing. Rey went down to the ring and delivered a basic promo defending the town and challenging Chavo to a match later in the show with the Cruiserweight title on the line. Chavo accepted, but rushed Rey from behind and started beating on him. Rey returned some punches and Chavo bailed out of the ring as more "Eddie" chants broke out. Rey posed on the turnbuckles for a bit and left also.

(2) Hardcore Holly & Bradshaw defeated Rhyno & Matt Morgan. Big pop for Holly and an average one for Bradshaw. Rhyno and Matt Morgan came out together and Matt Morgan is a giant in person. He's might not be like Brock but he's very close in terms of size. Lots of comedy spots and other than that just an average match. At one point Bradshaw clotheslined both Rhyno and Morgan and they fell onto each other in a sexual position, drawing lots of laughs and eliciting a "Rhyno's gay" chant. Hardcore Holly was over with the crowd and he threw nice dropkicks and took good bumps. Matt Morgan hit a great sitout powerbomb on Bradshaw near the end of the match. Rhyno also hit a Gore on Bradshaw. In the end though, Holly hit his Alabama Slam on Rhyno to pick up the win. After the match Bradshaw got on the mic and declared Holly the future WWE Champion (not in this lifetime) and drank a beer to celebrate.

Paul Heyman came out next and apparently Kalamazoo fans despise him along with everyone else. Paul ripped on us saying that the children are ugly and he even singled out a fan wearing a John Cena shirt. Paul continued to make fun of Cena which prompted Cena to walk out to a thunderous ovation. The crowd wanted a rap and Cena did not disappoint, calling Heyman "fatso" and referencing Gordie Howe among other local things. Cena went to attack Heyman and out of nowhere Sean O'Haire appeared out of Velocity purgatory to jump Cena. Heyman demanded for a referee and the match immediately started.

(3) John Cena beat Sean O'Haire. Very short but good TV style matchup. A lot of people didn't know who O'Haire was and others wondered why he hasn't been featured on television. Cena hit all of his signature spots and O'Haire performed some nice kicks but in the end Cena hit the FU for the victory. I am ready for a massive Cena push if that's where WWE is headed.

(4) The Bashams defeated Haas & Benjamin and Scotty 2 Hotty & Rikishi in a three way elimination tag team title match. The match was decent and Shaniqua really does look like a beast, which is a bit unsettling however I couldn't see her once things got going. Haas worked the majority of the match and whenever Rikishi tagged in he didn't stay in long. Haas and Benjamin were eliminated first. The finish of the match saw Scotty going for the Worm which didn't work and he got pinned with assistance from Shaniqua. After the match though Scotty gave the Worm to Shaniqua to keep everyone happy and Rikishi delivered the Stinkface to her too. Rikishi and Scotty are boring on t.v. but make for an excellent house show act.

(5) Kidman beat Ernest "The Cat" Miller. Lamont came out first to a decent pop and introduced The Cat. Kidman came out to a small pop, guess it's better than nothing. Stalling, lots and lots of stalling to this match and these two hardly didn't do anything. Probably the best thing I can say is that The Cat hit a nice looking DDT on Kidman. Other than that they stayed on the mat, no Shooting Star from Kidman, and eventually Kidman got the win with a rollup. If that's the best The Cat can offer than he should be reserved for cutting promos in small doses.

(6) Akio & Sakoda beat Spanky & Paul London. I really got the feeling that I was the only person in the building who knew who Spanky and Paul London were. Oh well. The match started really slow with both teams getting an even amount of offense and I began to wish for it to pick up. Luckily the last few minutes Spanky brought things up a notch with some great highspots. The highlight of the match was Paul London dropkicking Akio, flipping in mid-air and landing on Sakoda. In the end, Sakoda rolled up London, held onto the tights and stole the win.

Ten minute intermission. Used my track and field speed to run up to a stand and bought a Word Life t-shirt. Not a lot of merchandise was available.

(7) Chris Benoit beat Chuck Palumbo. I was still buying my shirt but got down to my seat just in time to see the two guys come out. The crowd got on Palumbo including a "Full Blown Idiots" sign. This was basically an extension of their brief match on Smackdown earlier in the week, but that's not a bad thing. Palumbo looked good in there, throwing some good punches and Benoit was extremely intense working to put on the best match every time. Benoit hit some Rolling Germans and also locked in the Sharpshooter. Benoit went up top for a headbutt but Johnny Stamboli came out and pushed him off. Benoit took a nasty bump from that push, landing awkwardly on his side, he seemed to be perfectly fine afterwards. Benoit locked in the Crossface and Palumbo tapped for the finish. Afterwards Stamboli got a Crossface for his efforts.

(8) Dawn Marie defeated Sable in a "Tiny Teddy" match. Sable is absolutely beautiful in person. It should be a crime to look that good considering her actual age. I managed to restrain myself to only two photos otherwise that could of cost me an entire roll. Dawn Marie looks very nice also. Both weren't wearing much anyway before the contest even started but Sable grabbed the mic, teased the crowd and then declared that she wouldn't participate. Dawn Marie attacked her and they rolled around catfight style. Dawn ripped her clothes off which I'm sure everyone saw coming and Sable left, making no attempt to cover herself up. Dawn then performed a very nice dance and posed for the crowd. Dawn basically won by default.

(9) Main Event: Rey Mysterio defeated Chavo Guerrero and Tajiri and A-Train in a four way elimination match for the Cruiserweight Title. Kurt Angle was the guest referee. Earlier in the show Paul Heyman had announced that Rey would not only fight Chavo, but Tajiri and A-Train as well. Angle came out first to the biggest pop of the night and no one seemed to mind that he wouldn't be wrestling. Rey got a big pop, Tajiri got some mild boos, and A-Train got some boos as he walked out with Heyman. This was a great match, Rey held his own matched up against A-Train and wasn't treated like a rag doll like on television against bigger wrestlers. Tajiri handed out plenty of great looking kicks throughout the match and locked in the Tarantula on Rey in the middle of the match. Rey went for an outside dive on Chavo but he missed and there wasn't much padding on the outside floor. Chavo had great heel heat again, constantly playing to the crowd and drawing "Eddie" chants. Eventually Rey Mysterio did a springboard dropkick to A-Train while Chavo rolled up Tajiri and they were both eliminated at the same time. Rey and Chavo faced off which was a great way to follow up the promo they had earlier in the show. They worked for about another 7 minutes and Rey got all his springboard spots in along with a huracanrana and a headscissors takeover. Chavo got in his fair share of offense as well. In the end, Mysterio hit the 619, went up top, West Coast Pop, capped off a great main event.

After the match, Rey posed on the turnbuckles and left, that was it, no post show angles, which was fine by me. No appearances by Big Show or Brock Lesnar but the crowd didn't seem to mind.

Best Match: Main Event

Worst Match: Kidman vs. The Cat

Best Babyface Heat: Kurt Angle, John Cena

Beat Heel Heat: Paul Heyman, Chavo Guerrero

Quick Notes: I applaud WWE for continuing the Eddie-Chavo storyline and explaining Eddie's absence and also for headlining with a Cruiserweight title defense. John Cena was over huge and I think the fans are ready to accept him as a legitimate main eventer soon. Also we were right up on the guardrail about 7 rows back and we slapped hands with basically all the wrestlers and they were so generous with the fans most notably Rey Mysterio and John Cena. Everyone worked hard, took good bumps and all the punches and moves looked sharp. The crowd was enthusiastic and did not sit on their hands which was nice. It sounds so cliche but it is an incredible experience to see WWE live especially with declining house show attendance rates so get out to see them if you can. That's about it, I enjoyed myself, hope they come around again before the year is out.

And this one is from the Observer:

Alright, wanted to give you the report on last nights poorly attended house

show. Again, prob 1200-1500 at the arena. Of course the overpriced

t-shirts were on sale, and I did like the new Undertaker one, would look

cool at the gym, but I refuse to pay twenty five bucks for a t-shirt that I

would cut the sleeves off of.

1) Nunzio v. Ultimo Dragon...they announced time limits for most of the

matches and this one was announced at 10 minutes...no broadways, though.

Decent match, considering both guys really aren't over. One somewhat

botched hurancanrana spot right at the end, but otherwise enjoyable.

Chavo Guerrero interview...Chavo ran down Eddy and Kalamazoo and stuff like

that. Rey came out and challenged him to a match later in the evening,

which is good since they had already advertised it. They have a brief

exchange and Rey poses as the end

2) Rhyno and Matt Morgan v. Bob Holly/Bradshaw...god awful. Rhyno and

Morgan do a few gay spots. I feel bad for Rhyno being so buried, and how

can a guy who is main eventing on the Smackdown side be in the second

freaking match on a show. It just didn't click. Morgan needs a bit more

time, and it's a shame they are already putting him on tv and on the house

shows getting beat. Holly with the pin on Morgan

Paul Heyman with an interview...changes the match with Rey and Chavo to a

four way with Rey, Chavo, Tajiri, and his cruiserweight for a night,

A-Train. At that point I considered asking for a refund. If I wanted to

watch a fat, hairy, no talent hack, I just would have watched the guy

sitting two rows in front of me. Seriously, the A Train is such a

buzzkill. Kurt Angle also announced as guest referee. Heyman also calls

out Cena, Cena comes out to a mild response and does a rap about

Kalamazoo...impromptu match...

3) John Cena v. Sean O'Haire...my buddy Adam, who is knowledgeable about

wrestling, watches on Monday and Thursday and spent time at many

independent shows, was like "I didn't know he was still around" Pretty

basic paint by numbers match. Cena wrestled in jean shorts and Reebok

pumps. I jokingly said when he took off his t-shirt, which was on sale at

the gimmick stand, all he would need to do is grab another one and he would

be ready to go out. Oddly enough, at Hooters, he was wearing jean shorts,

but a different shirt...Damn is was like 15 degrees out too...Cena wins

with the F U

4) Bashams v. Scotty Too Hotty/Rikishi v. Worlds Greatest Tag Team. WGTT

out first, hot tag (which means about 5 people popped), but Scotty stopped

from doing the worm and the Bashams win. Afterwards, for all the fans with

"guys with fat ass" fetishes, Rikishi rams his ass into the face of

Shaniqua, but this happened after Shaniqua got hit with the worm.

5) Spanky and Paul London v. Akio/Sakoda...again two teams really no one

cares about. You could have heard a pin drop, although the work was really

good. London hit his dropsault into a splash combination, which I hadn't

seen before. I believe the finish was London going for an outside-in

moonsault, Akio gets the legs up and covers him for the pin.

Ten minute intermission...most shocking thing about the show, they said it

would last ten minutes and it did!

6) Chuck Palumbo w/Johnny Stamboli v. Chris Benoit. Pretty bland match

which I attribute to the FBI. Talk about a gimmick that isn't over. I

guess no one watched Velocity. It was a submission match, and about

halfway thru, I felt like tapping out. Benoit wins with the crossface,

then he slaps it on Stamboli, who tapped as well. Then Stamboli got on the

mic, admitted he has no talent and charisma, and said he was getting out of

wrestling...okay, I dreamt that last part.

7) Lingerie contest...Sable v. Dawn Marie. Sable said she needed the

contest to be over early that way she could get the senior citizens

discount at the Sizzler. Unfortunately it came so late in the show, she

was forced to snack on the arena speciality in Kalamazoo...hot dogs and

popcorn. Sable wouldn't take off her robe, so Dawn did it for her and we

had a little cat fight. Sable left, ring announcer declares Dawn the

winner, but she still wants to give everyone a show and she does, and

that's it for tonights exploitation of women.

8) Rey v. Tajiri v. Chavo v. Black Hole of Charisma. The three talented

wrestlers started the match, then A-Train finally showed up. Rey got the

advantage of A-Train at least briefly, but A Train took over. Remember my

buddy Adam...his comment "they all look like little kids in there with

A-Train" Boy, that's some smart booking. A Train and Tajiri go out at the

same time. Chavo works over Rey, but then gets in the face of special

referee Angle, who Angle slams him, setting Chavo up for the 619 and the

finish. Rey celebrates and the evening is over.

I was really looking forward to seeing the Smackdown group. It was cool to

see Ultimo Dragon, Paul London, and Spanky in person, but unfortunately,

the lack of response to some of these people at the house show just shows

how bad the character development has gotten. Maybe over the last few

months if less time had been given to the McMahons and more time to the

guys who actually sell tickets, this problem wouldn't happen, but this is

stuff that's been said way too many times before. The crowd was

awful...Heyman said during his one interview he would have the camera

people tape the cruiserweight match and show Rey getting beat on Smackdown

on Thursday. I laughed when he said that. We've all heard of the empty

arena match, but this would have been the half-empty arena match.

I'm not sure of the exact order of the matches in the first half, I might

have goofed something up. The sheer euphoria of seeing the A-Train clouded

my memory.

Talk about two sides to a coin. The crowd either stank or was wild. Cena either was over huge or got a mild reaction. The show either blew or ruled. It's all about perception.

It's interesting how much can change in just a month. When the WWE came to Singapore, the FBI were openers and Holly/Bradshaw was third to last.

Talking about Orton against Christian, hasnt a few of the reports from people attending live said that he is getting some cheering from the fans as though he was a face? Just wondered if anyone else has thought why? and where this might be heading.
