Bret/HBK, Survivor Series 97

Recommended Posts

So I was watching Survivor Series 97, since I had never really watched the card before, just the main event. I got to thinking about why the WWF didn't do something to keep what happened that night from happening. It's not a perfect solution, but it's better than screwing Bret was. Let me see what you think:

Okay, the main problem is that Bret is leaving for WCW, and this is his last match. He's the champ, and they need to get the belt off him. But he doesn't want to lose to HBK in Montreal, because he's been built up to be a Canadian hero, and he thinks Shawn's a dick.

So let's say the show starts with one of the higer profile matches first - Stone Cold Steve Austin beats Owen Hart for the IC title with a quick stunner, fighting off interference from the Hart Foundation. Anyways, after 2 matches or so, HBK and HHH do an interview backstage where HBK rips on Canada, wipes his ass with the flag, etc. Then from behind, BAM! The Hart Foundation attacks, and lay a MONSTER beatdown to DX. Michaels has to be stretchered out of the arena, and the main event is in jeopardy.

The show continues. Later it's announced that Shawn won't be able to wrestle. Bret does an interview saying he doesn't care because it's his last night here and he doesn't care what happens to him, it's not like they can suspend him. But then Owen asks him for a title shot, since the fans in Montreal want one hell of a main event. Bret agrees.

They do a great main event, Owen wins, and is the new WWF champ. There's a big warm Canadian moment with Bret putting over Owen, etc. Hell, you could even end with Austin running out, pissed that he beat Owen and now Owen is WWF champ.

Then they could have put the belt on HBK at the December IYH or the next night on RAW or whatever. It would put Austin over as having a beef and wanting to go after the WWF title, and it would put Owen over big in Canada. It would have avoided the screwjob. I know Owen's health wasn't the best at the time, so he might not have been able to put out a ***** classic with his brother...but what do you guys think?

Okay, I need to stop rambling. :)

It sounds good to me. Especially because the crowd would havde been uber-hot for this match.

They would have been hot, but the HBK/Bret match was a rematch that had been awhile in the making and had great heat. The crowd would have been pretty disappointed.

Talk about bait and switch.

If my company was on the verge of bankruptcy, I wouldn't be very quick to put my main championship on Owen Hart.

I think it would have been fine for a month at the very most. Then HBK gets it, then Austin gets it at WM. I guess, though, without the Bret screwjob, we might not have ever gotten the Austin/Macmahon feud.

ehh, no. Bret Hart is my favorite wrestler ever, but as weird as it is, I wouldn't want what happened that night to happen any other way. It is one of the biggest nights, maybe the biggest night, in wrestling history, and I'm pretty happy that I was alive to see it.

Got to agree with others here, great idea, but in the grand scheme of things, do you want the title to be on a red hot heel going into the "Road To Wrestlemania" that winter, or to what most of the fans saw as a glorified JTTS just for the cheap pop in Canada

I'd be for an HBK-Owen-HBK transition during the time between the D-X PPV and WM though

I don't think it'd be a big problem if HBK got the title 1 or 8 days later, and then had won in a rematch or a four corners with HBK, Owen, Shamrock, and Taker at the DX PPV.

But it didn't happen like that, so who cares, right? :)
