From RandyOrton.net about Raw match....

The Sharpshooter is like a powerbomb or chokeslam.

It's always believable that it can end the match.

Have you ever heard the announcers talk about something else when the Sharpshooter is applied?

No, because it's already been built up as a finisher.

Really, I don't expect that point to get across because that being a finisher is in everyones mind already. Hell the first time you saw the move was most likely in a finiser situation.

But if the hold were used as a basic resthold mid match, there's no way they could keep the crowd in it for 3 mins with no resolution.

I never meant to say that it could be used like a resthold where nothing of any real value happens.

I meant that it can conceivably be applied for three minutes in the middle/end of a match while the agressor drags the victim away from the ropes and uses the ropes for leverage (not that that does anything, but wrestling lore says holding the ropes while applying any submission works.) and the fans will stay on the edge of their seat.

Okay, so Brock "killed" the legends of the Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, The Rock, The Undertaker, The Big Show, and Kurt Angle.

What legends has Randy "killed" ?

But thats only if it's been built up as a finisher before, if we had never seen or heard of that move before and some random guy used it in the middle of the match with just nothing really happening and one or two rope sports, it wouldn't have the same appeal.

If anything you can be into how the sharpshooters more complex, but not to the point where an entire crowd who's never seen it before would be all over it, especially for 3 minutes.

It's not fair to compare the sharpshooter because that's been considered a finisher for so long, and I don't remember the last time the leg scissors were even used.

By the way, please ban humongous. That outburst was one of the worst things I've seen on this board, and I've seen plenty of posters get banned for much less. It was totally uncalled for.

Christ

Here's some advice. Toughen up if that kind of language shocks and offends you. Don't worry about such little things, especially if they don't really have anything to do with you. Lighten up.

With that out of the way...

If the leg scissors had already been built up, that spot would of had the crowd really into it, but regardless was, to me, an enjoyable working of a hold.

That was the problem. We've never even SEEN that move from Randy before. Now, we had to endure it for three minutes, with absolutely no one in the arena buying that Van Dam was going to submit. All the selling and screaming in the world wouldn't have changed the fact that Van Dam just wasn't going to submit to a leg scissors. If they were looking for a submission move to be applied for a few minutes, they should have gone for something that looks a little more painful and has been established a little more. The leg scissors is pretty much a transitional move, and using it for as long as they did just didn't work.

It wasn't the language. It was him nearly destroying all interest I had in this thread. There was no point to it except for him to act like a tough guy on the freaking internet. We don't need people like that here, if you ask me.

Yeah but Randy was smart enough to not just sit with it, but build on it, and the last one was a the perfect "work goddamnit" last shot with the move that showed if it wasn't going to work than it wasn't going to, and because of the progression he used the last one was more headlock than body scissors, which is almost like working right from disabling RVD's finisher into setting up his own.

I was just into it because of Randy's work, not the basic elements of it.

I didn't see the super exciting progression, but we've already covered that.

Can we at least agree that there had to be a more visually appealing move somewhere in the wrestling arsenal that could have told the same story?

Well yeah, but there were also about 47 other instances where something better could of been done, but I've never seen a match without a bunch of those.

I just think it's clear Randy's not the overly bland and not so bright worker most were already convinced he was.

Yeah I don't think the guy should be banned, forums are about having the most different viewpoints possible, even if one of those is 'dumb'. It worked itself out.

It wasn't a viewpoint. It was him acting like an idiot for half a page.

The match was arguably one of Randy Orton's best singles matches with WWE, and it was Rob Van Dam that carried him to it. Interesting really, and goes to show that maybe Orton isn't as good as I thought he was.

I don't know if judging Orton's talent level from a match wherein he plowed face-first into the ringpost and was out on his feet for 85% of the match is a really good idea. It's like judging Jarome Iginla's talent from a game in which he took a stiff check halfway through the first period and played the rest of the game with a serious concussion.

It's only really fair to judge how good someone is if they're close to 100%.
