I enjoyed his insults to Cena, but to each his own. HAHAHAHAHAHA That was funny. The rap offs and the midget were some of the most absurdly unfunny "comedy" this side of Edge.

I don't really watch wrestling shows with the mindset "will this pop a rating" or "will this draw a buyrate"...if a segment entertains me, it's all fine and good. *I* know how good the participants are and that they'll deliver come match time. -Patrick

Granted it's not BEFORE Angle/Cena but it definitely had more heat.

I actually had a mental block and thought you were saying the Austin/Rock X-Seven match. Sorry. I'll stick by my originally planned answer and say that Vince McMahon/Stephanie McMahon had more heat. Which segues into the fact that McMahon/McMahon was a brutally bad feud, so clearly you didn't have to operate a good feud to get heat that night.

Yes, that did have more heat, but it's not every day that a six month angle gets blown off. If Angle/Cena had gotten that build what kind of heat would it have gotten. Interestingly enough, the build for Vince/Steph was ALL sketches and almost nothing in the ring, so I don't see how it helps prove your point there.

My point is that quality of the feud seemed to have precious little to do with heat that night.

I think the reason for that match was that the characters of Angle and Cena were so liked by the fans that they cheered for them. Also, the fact that both men put on a good match didn't hurt.

So you're saying it's more a problem with writing then with the actual straegy of using comedy skits to enhance a feud. That kind of contradicts what AS was saying earlier.

There's a huge difference between telling a joke and running a comedy skit. If in their promos they make fun of each other a little, fine. It's when you start skits and comedy routines that everything goes to hell. If Angle wants to tell a joke about how Eddy hasn't accomplished anything in the company, fine. If he walks out with a lawn mower, no.
RavishingRickRudo Posted January 19, 2004 Report Posted January 19, 2004 I subscribe to the Roger Ebert belief that I can't tell you what's funny and I can't tell you what to get off on - but I can say what's good. Comedy, for the most part, doesn't make for "good" storylines. At least, not for "good" main event storylines. I don't say "oooh, I got to see this now!" when something funny happens. I think the only time this past year when something funny happened that made me want to see a match more was with Quinton Jackson making fun of Wanderlei Silva in an interview before Pride 26 - "why you on yo knees Wanderlei" and calling him names in different languages. And that was funny in the "holy shit I can't believe he's saying that about Silva!" "Silva is going to kill him" kinda way.
