Marino resigns from his position with Dolphins

Davie, FL (Sports Network) - Former Miami quarterback Dan Marino has decided not to assume the role as the Dolphins' senior vice president of football Operations.

Marino informed team owner H. Wayne Huizenga of his decision on Tuesday.

"Since my retirement as a player, I approached Wayne on numerous occasions about a meaningful position in football operations with the Dolphins.

"Until recently, such an opportunity didn't exist. When it became clear that Wayne was looking to bring in a high-level football executive, I approached him about the position. I knew it would involve a significant lifestyle change but after further reflection, it became clear that those adjustments were ones that my family and I are not prepared to make at this time. As a result, I have decided that it would not be in the best interests of either my family or the Dolphins to assume the role as the team's senior vice president of football operations.

"I am grateful to Wayne for giving me this opportunity, and the last thing I would ever want to do would be to disappoint him, the Miami Dolphins organization, or its fans. I will be happy to help the team out in any way if asked, and I always will be the Dolphins' number one fan."

Marino accepted the job last month to return to the team that he quarterbacked for 17 years. He holds every major passing record for the Dolphins and virtually every such record for the NFL, including most attempts, completions, yards and touchdown passes.

He played for Miami from 1983-99. During his career, he participated in 242 games, including 240 starts, and threw for 61,361 yards and 420 touchdowns.

I agree with what Mark Patrick said this morning on his show:

Dan Marino is the most indecisive man in the world. On the NFL show on HBO he would pick one team (the Panthers for the Super Bowl) and then on the CBS pregame he would usually pick the other team (Pats for the Super Bowl). It wasn't just an isolated incident since he did it all season. He would probably hold people up in line at the grocery store trying to decide between paper and plastic bags.

I think he realized how much work and scrutiny this would bring. He was better of with the one day a week commentary job.

Though the Dolphins have bigger problems if Brunnell is their most sought after QB.

Well Brunell is the probably the best quick fix QB in FA. They just need to draft a QB for the future to put behind him.

He's been less than stellar since he lost the scrambling dimension to his game. I also don't think the Dolphins line will be able to protect him, and let's face it he's pretty fragile at this point in his career. I don't think Fiedler is that bad but then I don't think this team is capable of developing a QB.
