UFC on TSN!

Recommended Posts

I believe they are showing UFC 21 (which features the return of Marco Ruas). If you ever have the chance to see these big 2 hour shows DO SO. They're pretty rare footage considering you won't find any of them in the video stores. I know I'm enjoying them.

I believe it's on at Midnight, though check your tv guide to make sure.

No idea, I haven't seen it. Here's the full card. They'll probably show 3-5 matches. Only one match went to a decision, the rest were either by KO, Submission, Corner Stoppage, TKO, or Cut.

UFC 21 - Return of the Champions

July 16, 1999

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Travis Fulton vs. David Dodd

Andre Roberts vs. Ron Waterman

Eugene Jackson vs. Royce Alger

Tsuyoshi Kohsaka vs. Tim Lajcik

Paul Jones vs. Flavio Luiz Moura

Jeremy Horn vs. Daiju Takase

Pat Miletich vs. Andre Pederneiras

Maurice Smith vs. Marco Ruas

It'll be cool to see Smith vs. Ruas and Takase vs. Horn. Roberts vs. Waterman was a slugfest and they'll probably show it. Don't know about the others. Maybe someone can help fill us in. Paging Dr. Tong, Dr. Lei Tong, you are needed in the infirMMAry.

1999 was a cool year for MMA because that's when you could see cross-training coming into full effect and the sport really maturing. It was one or two steps below what we have today (and it's only been 5 years! Can you say the skill level of ANY sport has matured that much in just 5 years?) but it was like 20 steps above what was going one when it first started (which was another 5 1/2 years). I think the first real big sign of the transition was at the next event (which was also shown on TSN) in Frank Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz.

Jackson/Alger: IIRC, Alger put on a wrestling clinic early against Jackson, but begins gassing late in the first. Ends with a very audible KO.

Pederneiras/Miletich: Like most match's during Miletich's reign, none-too eventful. Pederneiras was actually a good fighter, facing pretty much top level talent in his short career (Uno, Sudo, Pat & Sato), but was outsized here.

Jones/Moura: By this points Jones was still defeating good opponents like Moura, Paulson & Kikuta, which makes Chuck Liddell's win over him at 22 that much more suprising.

TK/Lajcik: Don't remmeber it, but I remember liking most of TK's fights (sans a few, like his "exhibition" with Pete Williams), and the Bohemian usually put up a good fight.

Fulton/Dodd: Of the few Dodd fights I've seen, they were entertaining. FUlton was a bit off/on, although against a guy like Dodd, I iamgine he turned it up a bit. Probably won't be shown, tough.

Guest The Winter Of My Discontent

I'm watching. It'll be slick. I watched the Frank Shamrock/Tito Ortiz UFC 19 a few weeks ago too.

Man, that was one bad main event! lol.

The first match -though JIP'd- had a really good ending, the second fight was less exciting but I felt was still interesting. Watching TK work the guard was fun cause he was always active. The third fight had some really good striking from the ground and I love that sleeper hold finish. I really enjoyed the fourth fight (Horn/Takase) as Horn showed some really good strikes from the mount and Takase looked fucked. The fifth fight continued to prove why Pat Miletech is the cure for insomnia. Not that his opponent was any better, but shit, he has had some of the most boring matches I have ever seen. The main event was, well, disappointing. The highlight were the two (and only) leg kicks Smith threw. Hell, the package before the fight was more exciting. They should have showed Smith vs. Coleman!

Not the most exciting event, but looking at the card -on paper- it wasn't promising to be. I enjoyed it a lot though, it brought back some really good memories of an age often forgotten (the "mid UFC" years - usually people remember the early days of Gracie and their 31-and-up shows). UFC 12-20 is one of my personal favourite periods of time in MMA because it showed the learning process and evolution of the sport. Around the time of _this_ show people were taking what was taught and learned previously and trying to put it together and worked out the kinks. The outcome is what we have today. The announcing was good -it's always nice to hear Blatnick-, Buffer is still a tool, John Peretti is still flamingly gay, and Goldberg is, as always, gaggingly tolerable. I love that TSN is showing these 2 hour-block of events and hope to see some of the later ones in the future.

Well, the most entertaining part of an otherwise very dissapointing main event is Ruas' corner trying to inspire him to continue the fight, with such vigor-unducing phrases like "Do it for your family, Marco!" and "For your country!"... all of which had no effect except to amuse those who could hear them.
