Murmuring Beast 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2004 I'm going to see Brian Wilson and his band perform SMiLE tonight at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow, Scotland. I've been waiting a year for this night and the day has come. HUZZAH. Anyway, has anyone else been to see him or is maybe going to see him soon on his European tour? Murmuring Beast 0 Report post Posted March 4, 2004 Simply the most amazing, sparkling, shimmering, energetic, enthusiastic, perfect, religous gathering of people, music and soul I have ever witnessed. Brian Wilson and his wonderful backing band blew the roof off of the Clyde Auditorium, running through a near two hour set, which spanned from little known gems such as Hawaii and Good Timin' to God Only Knows and Heroes and Villains. All the top hits were here, including California Girls and in the encore, Surfin' USA, Fun, Fun, Fun, and Help Me Rhonda and Brian also showed off a couple of new songs. After the interval Brian, led the band through the SMiLE section of the show. A seamless 30+ minutes of music followed which had the group snorting like animals, singing like angels and wearing fireman's helmets. After finishing with Good Vibrations, Brian recieved a standing ovation. The group then came back out as did Brian for a run-down of all the Beach Boys greatest sing-along tunes. Almost everyone was dancing and clapping along in the final spurt and when Fun, Fun, Fun ended, nobody left. Brian came back and sang Love & Mercy to finish the show. Everyone was touched. A Magnificent night.

The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 Well, there's always Landlocked.... I was talking to someone today about "the Beach Boys" doing some gigs over here. It's hard to explain to people why I have no interest at all in seeing 'them', especailly when they know how many albums/bootlegs i have by with "beach boys" on the cover. But it's *not* the beach boys, some people just don't get that. It's a fucking disgrace that Mike can go round touring as "The Beach Boys". IMO anyway. You'd need at *least* one Wilson in their to even think of calling it the Beach Boys.

I wish they'd get together and do it again, but I don't see it happening until something major happens. A damn shame, because I'd pay all the money in the world to see Brian, Mike, Al and Bruce up there singing again.
The Decemberists 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 Considering Brian and Mike still aren't talking to each other, singing together is probably a bit much. Although i'm pretty sure it's Mike who's going out his way not to patch things up. Still, Dennis did marry his daughter so i can sort of see why he's still pissed off. But it's not as if Brian was forcing Dennis to marry her. I've always seen Mike as an arrogant prick anyway. The guy doesn't like Pet Sounds for god's sake! Plus it could be argued that if he hadn't constantly been putting Brian down, having a go at him for his "ego music" then maybe Brian wouldn't have gone insane or whatever. Although I will admit if there's anyone to blame it was mainly Murry Wilson, i still think that if Mike had been able to understand Pet Sounds and Smile then maybe things would've turned out a lot better for Brian. Bruce kicks ass though.
Murmuring Beast 0 Report post Posted March 5, 2004 I think Brian and Mike do talk, but they just don't do it for very long. I think it's a kind of "wait beside the telephone to see if he rings" kind of relationship they both have. Bruce is a great guy and is always complimentary of Brian's work. I think Mike grew to like Pet Sounds. He loves Sloop John B and often says God Only Knows is a brilliant song. And don't forget the words to "Brian's Back".. There isn't the bitterness there once was. Mike and Brian are two very different people, and they are doing their own things now and I respect that. It's just a fantasy of mine to see them get together again and play a show for the millions who have also dreamt of it for years. I don't really like Mike Love, but I understand how he saw music as a profession and not a way of life. He wasn't nearly as gifted as Brian and would have much preferred the Beach Boys to continue in the 1960s as a band who wrote songs about pretty girls, cars and surfing. Kudos to Love though in some respects. He has been touring for 40 years and is one of rock's most enduring performers.
