Classic Match of the Day

In What I hope can be a Special Feature here for The Board, I thought a "CLASSIC MATCH OF THE DAY" would be a good way for us, WRESTLING FANS to discuss our opinions on Classic Matches.

The idea is for an open-minded discussion about what made the match in question so "great" or perhaps, "bad." This isn't a discussion about what does ***** have different then a ****1/2 match. Talk about the psychology within the match in question and what worked and needed improvement, what could have improved that match.

So The first Edition of CLASSIC MATCH OF THE DAY will have a look at The Classic Match

WWF Title Match

Street Fight

Cactus Jack Vs Triple H

Royal Rumble 2000

New York City, NY

The Result: Triple H defeated Cactus Jack via Pedigree at 26:51

Interesting concept, but probably controversial with some.

Probably my favorite HHH match of all time. The match had a nice pace of "brawling" but not the garbage kind like New Jack does. HHH's blade job from the barbed wire 2x4 shots still look sick since it still looks like real barbed wire.

The hand-cuffing sequence almost had me going "not a rip off from last year", but The Rock making the save was awesome, and having Cactus uncuffed to slaughter Hunter more = great.

The fact that the match pretty much was clean throughout (minus Rocks save in the aisle) makes it better.

HHH having to pull out all the stops to win was also great, as it took TWO pedigrees to finish off Cactus, the 2nd one being onto the thumbtacks.

The Only regret of the match - Cactus Jack losing.

Still a ***** Match in my opinion. I could watch it every day and not get tired of it.

I remember that match mainly for how crazy both of them were taking multiple bumps on the thumb tacks Cactus put on the mat, and how much freakin' blood HHH lost, then post mast Cactus attacking HHH and giving him one last shot. I also recall being very disturbed by seeing Foley with tacks on his neck and forehead and wondering how he wasn't dead. It was overkill, and it ends up hurting their remtach at No Way Out when they had the Cell match. All in all, the Rumble streetfight was a nasty piece of work thaty should not have gone on as long as it did, HHH bled WAY too much(he had a cut on his leg and head), and Foley seemed heel in this fight, rather than doing everything to win, he went for sheer brutality and ended up paying for it. Kuods to both men for what they went through, but I felt it wasn't as good as it could have been. It was hardcore done wrong.

I forgot how it happend, but HHH punctured a whole in his leg on something he landed on. Probably a piece of the wood from the 2x4 but I forget.

The build is incredible! I love the part in the video package where Mick turns around after being hit in the back with a chair.

The one thing that bugs me about the match is Rock's interference. I hate how Rock helps Mick yet Mick ends up losing in the end.

You're sure this thread shouldn't go in any other folder?

Anyways, yep, the match is good. I'll probably review it in my Once A Day Match Review soon, so I get to take another look at it. For now, I'd say it's probably the best match of Feb. '99 to Feb. '00.

Oh, and case anybody doesn't know, the reason for the two pedigrees is that Cactus told Hunter to re-do it on tacks. The first one was planned as the finish.

The hole in Hunter's leg was the most brutal part of the match for me.

I've known about the sudden change for a while, but was HHH faking the "going psychotic" attitude when Cactus kicked out, or was he really pissed off.

In all honesty...I dont think this match can be rated below ****.

It is a dramatic, violent, good-spot-filled epic. I dont think pro wrestling has ever had a more realistic 'street fight'... and definitly not in a main event, world title match. Also, this was THE match, in THE fued, that totally put HHH over. For a longtime, and maybe now, that was a really good thing.

Me - *****. I dont go by the 'perfect' theory.

Stephanie looked pretty pissed/confused, and she can't act for shit.

And I honestly couldn't make out the expression on Hunter's face when I watched it again today, for all the blood.

I'll have to go check...

I always figured It was HHH acting pissed that one pedigree wasn't enough...

A "TSM Classic Match of the Day" thread sounds pretty cool. There should probably be some type of requirements or something, though.

HHH vs. Cactus Jack from Royal Rumble 2000 is one of my favorite matches of all time. The match had a strong build-up, and I had high expectations for it. HHH did an awesome blade job, and both men took some nasty bumps, such as HHH taking a piledriver on the announce table, which doesn't break. The match had several believable near-falls, and I had no idea who was going to win. I remember being super-pissed when Foley kicked out of the first Pedigree, because I was a huge HHH fan at the time (actually, I still am).

The Street Fight featured one of the best performances that I've ever seen from a wrestler. Despite having a gaping hole in his leg, HHH not only worked through it, but he took several nasty bumps, and (along with Foley) produced a MOTYC. Most people don't like HHH anymore, but even the biggest detractor has to give him some credit for his dedication.

Overall, I have no real complaints about the match.

My rating: *****

I'm going to whip out the 2000 Rumble DVD and re-watch it with a friend this afternoon--but the build-up is awesome. The way Foley pulled off the transformation, and HHH actually selling fear (something he almost never does anymore) made it work, and think "NOW he's screwed."

It was on of many candidates for HHH that year...

I picked this match as the MOTY for 2000.

I liked the No Way Out match more, but this is still an incredible match. The heat is incredible, and HHH really tries out there, and it shows. I love the ending.

HOWEVER: when compared to other hate-filled brawls such as Magnum TA vs Tully Blanchard Starcade 85, HHH/Austin at No Way Out 2001, Rock/Austin at WMX7, and even the HHH/Foley match from NWO00, which tells a far better story. Also, I really don't like Rock interfering, despite how it plays off of the Rumble 99 Foley/Rock match.

***3/4

I think it's important that we don't use this match or any matches that become subject be compared to other matches...I'd like the focus to point to the match itself.

I think its fair to compare this match to Tully-Magnum...as that match is the measuring stick for all pro wrestling brawls...

Interesting note. For a show with like, five matches or so each year, the Rumble has had a MOTYC in 4 of the last five years.

Choke, what was you opinion of the match?

I completely enjoyed this Match from the very start to the End.

This was Triple H at his absolute best and Perhaps even Foley's greatest performance either (although that's another debate). The match was extremely well planned and orchestrated by the two perfomers.

The build up was spectactular and was WWF at it's CREATIVE peak. The crowd was incredible, and the story that was told was beautiful in all of it's ugliness. Great Spots that weren't contrived in any way whatsoever. The match NEVER slowed down, dispite the many spots. Trip's amazing determination dispite the gash in his leg proved how much he once loved the sport.

Fantastic match that never ceases to entertain.

You can go all the way back to 1998 for that stat.

1998-Taker/Shawn-Casket

1999-Rock/Mankind-I Quit

2000-Jack/HHH-Street Fight

2001-Jericho/Benoit-Ladder

2002-Rock/Jericho

2003-Benoit/Angle

2004-Rumble.

I must be the only person who doesn't get the love for Rock/Jericho from RR 2002.
