Eclipse 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2004 Just reminded me, since the deadline is coming up soon. Just a hypothetical question. What if someone worked in this country since like....the 1970's, and NEVER filled out a tax form, to thid day? What would happen to their Social Security checks and all that? What would happen if they were found out by the government?
CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2004 I'm pretty sure the only way they wouldn't be found out is if they never had a Social Security number (which means no pension cheques for them). If not, it's fines and/or jail, since it's mandatory to file a tax return.

Stephen Joseph 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2004 Theoretically, its possible that of the N audits the IRS does at random every year for the whole population one could get away each year *yeah...right, studies show that it isn't all that random* To get around this problem, the fines for NOT filing a return are quite stiff, hopefully to get the expected value of not filing a return negative. In short, what would happen? They'd figure out how much in taxes he/she owed for this year, and then ask for previous returns. When those can't be produced, not only are they going to garnish money, buddies' going to jail for tax evasion...its not exactly a short sentence

My dad used to work for the DEA. He got (involuntarily) transferred to NYC in late 1995, but instead of going he told them to fuck off and resigned. My parents got audited, for tax year 1995, the very next year despite never having been audited before, nor having any "unusual" business filed in their return. Funny how the random chance of an audit hit them that year. It still amazes us to this day. What a coincidence. (The actual audit found nothing incriminating, btw; it was just a huge pain in the ass for my parents to deal with.)
