Plans In The Works For The X-Files 2

David Duchovny confirms sequel plans...

In an interview with moviehole.net, David Duchovny confirmed that a sequel to The X-Files movie will happen.

"It's definiely happening. Chris [Carter, the series creator] has a great idea for the new movie and I expect we'll be able to begin shooting in the next year or so."

As for whether or not Mulder will develop in the film:

"I hope not. I was really fighting against that in the final years of the show and I think the whole point. I think we're going to be introducing a new character in the film which will allow us to cast a major star, male or female, who will want to be part of an exciting supernatural thriller. I think the new movie will appeal to both our core fans and a broad audience. I'm very excited about it."

Well, I wasn't too happy about the way the X-Files concluded in the series finale, so this news excites me. The last movie wasn't too bad either.

It's just because Carter can't think of any new ideas that are, what is that word......

No, it's because whatever he does after this will always be in the shadow of The X Files. He created the single best sci-fi show in recent memory, and like Gene Roddenbury he's got to live with it now.

It's a hell of a monkey to have on your back.

The series "jumped the shark" so to speak after the first movie. The movie itself was good but it ruined the rest of the show.

However, I wouldn't mind a 2nd movie if they used it to tie up all the loose ends and end the series. But what I had heard a couple years ago was that they planned to make a franchise out of the X Files movies.

I don't think that would be a good idea.

STOP MAKING FUCKING SEQUELS!

Amen.

X-Files: the show ran too long to begin with. The series finale was 90 minutes of recapping a plot that made no sense. Just let the thing die already.

Cool. I'm a fan of the series and I really liked the first movie.

I stopped watching the show around season 7, but since August i've watched all the mythology episodes in the 4 box sets they released.

I just watched the series finale and I don't think it's as bad as everyone made it out to be. However, there still needs to be some sort of closure as there are still lots of loose ends (the alien invasion of 2012 and what happens to William and Gibson Praise).

If the X-Files 2 (apparently being filmed this month) is going to be a prequel to the series finale, then I don't think i'm going to be interested. All they need to do is have Mulder briefly narrate the colonization conspiracy to introduce the new fans and go from there. I just wish they didn't kill off CSM at the end of the finale (or the Syndicate earlier in the series for that matter) since it would have been great to have him further the mythology in future movies.

It was rumored a couple of years back, when the show just ended, that Fox told Carter they wouldn't greenlight any new X-Files movies unless the plot was an expanded to two hours long "monster of the week" episode and had had both Mulder and Scully.

That said, an expanded monster of the week episode is the best way to go since the mythology shit got so fucking confusing (especially when Carter chickened out on making Mulder's sister be revealed to be his ex-girlfriend) that it's best left forgotten and unresolved.....

I know this is slightly off topic, but i'm thinking of getting the Millenium box sets but i've only seen one or two episodes (which I didn't mind) but other people have said it's boring etc. Just wondering if its worth my money/ if its actually any good?

Depends. Seasons 1 and 2 are polar opposites in terms of content: Season one mostly stand-alone horror stories and is good for a casual viewing. Season two is something outside the stand-alone episodes that you'll either love or hate; as Fox made the writers introduce an X-Files esque conspiracy storyline with the Millenium group turning into murderous fanboys trying to kill the other side off over the issue of which side's apocalypse theory is correct. But the stand-alone episodes (most notably the Zodiac Killer episode, "Jose Chung's Doomsday Defense", and "Somehow, Satan Got Behind Me") are some of the best of the series and make the season two DVD worth buying.

As for season three, it's extremely hit or miss; they show goes back to it's season one roots of less conspiracies and more killers of the week and they introduce a new black female partner to the show to make it more like the X-Files. It does have one decent episode though, where James Marsters from BTVS/Angel guest stars as a former Desert Storm veteren who steals chemical weapons from the US government and uses them on the daughter of one of the Millenium Group top guys so as to make them admit to using US soldiers as test subjects for a virus that the Group had revealed that it had in it's arsenal during season two.
