Maybe its just me but wouldn't a ;) convey a sarcastic remark? That's like the first thing I assume when I see that particular smiley in a non-flirtatious manner.

And I've learnt well that people enjoy not having one - if someone misconceives something as for real, others like to flame that person.

Its also very easy for somebody to say something ignorant or offensive and pretend they were being sarcastic but there's nothing you can do about that. Smilies work well for certain kinds of sarcastic posts when a poster wants to make sure his or her comments are taken in jest by another.

I meant in a post not in and actual face to face conversation.

I wink dammit. Sometimes a wink is very pointed. Usually it means "Yes, I too agree that the person who can't that I'm doing this is an asshole" sometimes it means "I would like to do things to the lower regions of your body" but that wink doesn't work as well.
