From Gamespot:

Capcom readying Resident Evil Outbreak File #2

Zombies will rise again this winter with the PlayStation 2-exclusive sequel to the survival horror game. First screens inside.

You can’t keep a good zombie down, and like the undead, Capcom’s Resident Evil series just won’t die off. After days of rumors, Capcom officially announced today that it is developing a sequel to Resident Evil Outbreak.

Capcom released the original Resident Evil in 1996, and the series has helped put the survival horror genre on the map. Like its predecessor, Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 2 and is slated to spook store shelves this winter. The new game casts players as one of eight average citizens of Raccoon City who are trying to contain a plague that’s been turning everyone into the living dead. One level features a zombie zoo, where elephants and other creatures have gotten an undead makeover. (Remember, don’t feed the animals...brains.)

While Outbreak File #2 will still be playable solo, zombie hunters can also venture into the online world, where they can hook up with three other players for co-op missions. In addition, the game will also support the PS2’s hard drive. GameSpot will have more details on this game as they become available.

They also have the same screens in my post above, but of a much higher quality - click here...

Have you been playing Outbreak online? I've beaten the first 4 levels on easy, so far. And tonight, on Hellfire, for the first time, I had a team mate zombify and chase me. But I blew him away and went on to be the sole survivor of 4. Yes!

Yah, I've been going back and forth off and online. I've gotten past the first four stages as well. I think that the only time a teammate was 'turned' the bastard ended up actually killing me because I had run out of ammo.

Yeah, zombie teammates online are actually much scarier than other enemies because you're not dealing with A.I; they know where you went so they hunt you down.

Indeed. So, I take it you're enjoying the game then? I'm already psyched about the second one. I hope that they add a USB headseat feature for it..

Yes, that would be great. I mean, at least allow headset capabilities in the lobbies. I know that the point of not allowing it in the game is that veterans will just tell everyone how to solve puzzles. But then again, to play the level online you had to beat it offline anyway.

Online play was the best thing that ever happened to Resident Evil. I really feel like I'm one of a party of people in a survival-horror flick as we get picked off one-by-one (especially in the Hive).

And what's great is that people's personalities make the game different too. I've played with selfish types who hog items, loners who go off alone (that's me), bossy people who know what they're doing so they make you wait for them while they go collect items, people who suck at fighting so they get bit all the time, people that seemingly don't know where to go so they follow you around like a lost puppy, and people who are helpful and give you health items and weapons. This game rules.

Yah, I'd say I fall into the loner category as well, which is why I'm partial to the second scenario online because you and your team are forced to split up when you crawl through a vent.

I'm having a killer time with the final scenario offline though. Damn, the map alone is so expansive.

Yeah, I played that map for about an hour and I feel like I got nowhere. I did have to cheat and go to gamefaqs for the solution to the grandfather clock puzzle, but I have no idea how they got that number from the memo of digits.

And I find that the Hive is the best for splitting up your team (and also Decisions, Decisions), because when everyone gets into an elevator they might all pick a different floor.

I hope they add full headset capabilities for part 2. Talking to the person(s) on the other end just adds a whole new experience, and I wouldn't be worried about vets telling people to solve the puzzles, I mean hell, if they have the net they can go online and look up numerous walkthroughs/cheats anyway.

More info from Gamespot, including a rough release date/period of Q4 2004.

Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 Impressions

Resident Evil Outbreak is not an old game. In fact, as of this writing, Capcom’s online take on the Resident Evil franchise is about a month and a half old. Capitalizing on a hot thing, Capcom is currently readying a follow-up for release this winter. Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 appears to be offering more of the same zombie bustin’ action for PlayStation 2 owners.

File #2 sounds more like a mission pack than a full-fledged sequel. The game will offer all-new scenarios for the series' cast of eight playable characters to traverse. Non-player characters and new enemies will be encountered in the game. Additionally, enemy placement is randomized to give the game a different feel every time you play.

On the tracking side, the game will keep several statistics, such as favorite weapons, distance walked, and play time. The game will give you points as you play, also. These points can be used to unlock characters, artwork, and other items in the game’s collection mode.

Resident Evil Outbreak File #2 can be played by four players online. Furthermore, you can play the game offline, which will pair you up with two artificial intelligence-controlled characters.

Outbreak File #2 appears to be sticking closely to the original Outbreak’s formula, so it’s no surprise that the game will be ready less than a year after the original’s North American release. Expect to see File #2 in stores this winter.

There are also more new screens here.

I actually like the concept for this one. Zoo's at night crept people out, pure good logic. But why is there a Resident Evil game coming out every 6 months now?

I guess it's easier when the format is akin to Outbreak. Plus, I've read that a lot of these levels were pre-made when the first game was released so that they could release an update soon after. As long as it's as good as the first one, I'm all for it. I hope there are more missions this time around, though.
