Champions Carnival results

Recommended Posts

Guest Black Tiger

With the other CC thread getting kind of long, I figured a seperate thread for results would be a good idea.

Day 1:

Mutoh over Hayahi

Sasaki over Arashi

Kawada over Araya

Omori over Kea

Day 2:

Mutoh over Arashi

Sasaki over Jamal

Kea over Araya

Kojima vs Omori draw.

Totals so far

Block A:

Sasaki: 4

Mutoh: 4

Arashi: 0

Jamal: 0

Hayashi: 0

Block B:

Omori: 3

Kawada: 2

Kea: 2

Kojima: 1

Araya: 0

I think Sasaki is deffinitely going far. I only see one more big win for Omori though. I'm still predicting Taiyo Kea to win the whole thing.

With the IWGP title off of Sasaki, is there really anything stopping them from booking him as Kawada's next challenger? If they need a fresh challenger, Sasaki makes just as much sense as Kea, probably more when you factor in Kawada and Sasaki's big feud in 2000-01 over the IWGP Title.

The booking seems pretty transperant to me. Obviously, the two finalists from Block A are Mutoh and Sasaki, and Block B should be Kawada and either Omori or Kojima, probably Omori since Zero One will want him to at least get that far. I'm not sure how they're structuring the semi-finals this year, but it seems logical to book Kawada/Omori and Mutoh/Sasaki in the semis and then Kawada/Sasaki in the finals. I would never associate Mutoh's booking with logic, but even he shouldn't be stupid enough to screw up on that.

The booking of the semi finals is the same idea that NJPW uses for the BOSJ and G1 tournaments, 1st place of A vs 2nd place of B and 1st of B vs 2nd of A.

I'm predicting Kea to win, because he's the only member of RO&D with any sort of credibility and Kawada definitely needs a fresh challenger. No doubt Mutoh and Kensuke make the semi finals, not sure about Block B though, except that you can count Araya out. I don't see Omori doing it either since he's not a really established guy from Zero One ala Hashimoto or Ohtani.

But like you said, never confuse Mutoh's booking with logic

In that case, they could book Kawada/Mutoh and Sasaki/Omori (or Kojima), and still run Kawada/Sasaki in the finals. They could also run it as a semi-final and then have Sasaki/Mutoh in the finals, I guess.

As for Omori, isn't he about at the same level of establishment as Ohtani at this point? Not at Hashimoto's level, but more of an upper midcard guy? I don't follow Zero One closely, but it seemed like that was his status in AJPW and Noah.

I don't really follow Zero One either so I don't know what Omori's status in the company is. Kawada is off the tour with a broken pinky (this is the same guy who wrestled a thirty minute match with a broken arm?).

Day 3

Kea over Kawada (forfeit)

Araya over Kojima

Mutoh vs Sasaki draw

Jamal over Hayashi

Block A:

Sasaki: 5

Mutoh: 5

Jamal: 2

Arashi: 0

Hayashi: 0

Block B:

Kea: 4

Omori: 3

Kawada: 2

Araya: 2

Kojima: 1

Well, that shoots my prediction out the window. Having Kea go over Kawada does suggest that they want him to challenge for the TC, though.

My guess is that with Kawada out, and Kojima/Omori going to a draw, they'll be the ones in the semis, along with Mutoh/Sasaki. You could be right about Kea, though.

Here's something a little creepy, in the 1994 tournament, Misawa got hurt and had to forfeit most of his matches, just like Kawada has to this year.

Omori is a lock for the semi finals now, and the winner of Kea vs Kojima will be the other one.

Broken pinky? What a crock of shit.

There MUST be something behind all this, right? RIGHT!?!?

I would take the broken finger thing is only a reason to have whoever wins this to face Kawada for the title???

The Champions Carnival winner usually DOES get a Triple Crown match on the next tour.

Well that is obvious. My apologies for not explaining further. I mean, this way they won't have to have Kawada lose in the Carnival, thus saving him to fight the winner at a later date.....

Reports from Zach.com made it sound legit, though you never know with these things.

All the same, I doubt AJPW would work something like this, as it makes just as much sense to have Kawada lose to someone in the Carnival and then avenge the loss later in a TC match.

Besides, if you're a promoter trying to come up with a phony injury to sideline your champion, "broken pinky" probably wouldn't come to mind. That doesn't exactly strike a cord with wrestling fans, especially those used to seeing Kawada work so many matches with injuries.

Is there a chance that the reason why maybe they worked the injury is because they are going to have who ever wins the tournament go over Kawada for the TC(even though I doubt it)?

Zach has a news bit on there that says Kawada might even miss his match with Goldberg next month. It's definitely not a work.

Yeah, I read the same thing you did and I agree it's NOT a work. It sucks, but Kawada has been a shell of his former self for quite sometime.

Day 4 results are in, and my hopes of Kea are officially down the drain.

Omori over Kawada (forfeit)

Jamal over Mutoh

Hayashi over Arashi

Kojima over Kea

Block A:

Sasaki: 5

Mutoh: 5

Jamal: 4

Hayashi: 2

Arashi: 0

Block B:

Omori: 5

Kea: 4

Kojima: 3

Araya: 2

Kawada: 2

on 4/17 Kojima will automatically receive 2 points for his forfeit over Kawada thereby putting Kojima at 5 Omori is also automatically in first place whether or not Araya is able to beat him on 4/17 (5 if he loses, 7 if he wins) Kawada's injury really fucked up the booking.

I could possibly see Omori losing to Araya to tie them up and Mutoh running some sudden death tie breaker where the winner continues and the loser in eliminated keeping Kea in 2nd place, but that's just wishful thinking so my pick can still have a shot at winning :)

Maybe I'm under estimating the importance of his pinky for wrestling purposes, but why is a broken pinky keeping him from wrestling, ESPECIALLY if it is true that this is not a work?

Did it fall off or something? Cripes.

I'm wondering the same. It's possible there could be a worse injury that hasn't been diagnosed yet and they needed a quick reason for him to miss the tournament. Or the pinky could've been the proverbal straw that broke the camal's back as far as compiling injuries.

it was fractured in four different places, and he had to undergo emergency surgery, so says Zach.

Or maybe Kawada isn't willing to work injured like he used too because of the current state of AJPW.

The results are in, Mutoh over Sasaki in the finals of the tournament. The results make sense, but the booking was pretty bad. Kawada's injury may have had something to do with that though.

MUTOH over Sasaki?

Christ, someone tell me they're not thinking of putting the title back on him......are they?

I hope not, but before we worry about that. We should worry about Kawada vs Goldberg happening at the next HUSTLE show.

There has been talk that the Champion Carnival winner will wrestle the G1 winner later this year as well.

I think it's pretty safe to say I don't wanna see GOLDBERG/MUTOH/KAWADA anywhere near each other.

At this point I think Goldberg would be almost welcomed as champ compared to have Mutoh again or even dealing with fucking Bob Sapp as the IWGP Champ.

I'm perfectly content with Kawada at the moment if not Kawada, I'd be satisfied with Tenryu or Kojima, then Taiyo Kea, THEN Mutoh, and I'd rather see muthafuckin JAMAL with the Triple Crown than Goldberg.

That's what I'm saying too. I actually think that Kawada still has some good in him and what he has left shouldn't be wasted on guys like MUTOH/GOLDBERG.

I'm fine with Kawada too, I was just saying if he has to drop the belt I think I'd rather it be to Goldberg instead of Mutoh. I'd prefer it go to Kojima but I'm thinking that won't happen.
