Guest MikeSC Report post Posted April 12, 2004 Was I the only one loved the irony of Mike Wilbon on PTI griping that ESPN basically manufactured Bonds' chase of 660 HR to fill up air time --- then them having their NEXT segment pre-empted --- to show Bonds hitting home run #660? -=Mike

Guest Smues Report post Posted April 12, 2004 Damnit PTI gets cut short for Fuckface hitting his 660? ANGER (I don't get to see PTI till I get home and watch my tape). Why does Barry have to keep interupting my ESPN viewing? When he hit 600 my dad and I sat through an hour of sportscenter where all they did was suck him off for hitting it, because we wanted to see the top 10 bloopers of the week they would be airing at the end of the hour. We sat through a whole hour of this crap, finally they get to the plays, and after 3 or 4 of them they stop and go to a Bond's press conference. When I snap he's the first to die. FUCK I hate him. Gert T 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2004 Wilbon had a good point of only caring about 700, passing Ruth at 715, and then the record. The problem is, when you hit 55 HR's per year, once you hit 535, you can go from something like 16th up to 3rd in about two years.

It also irks me when ESPN goes nuts about a guy having a 20+-game hitting streak. When it hits FIFTY games, then I might start to care. -=Mike

I also laughed when I saw these events unfold on my TV set. Oh, and yay for Woody for beating Bill P. in ATH beforehand -- for the record, that show also got cut into for the "Bonds Watch." I hope ESPN also breaks into regular programming every time Bonds comes to bat for the rest of the season -- everytime they break in they can have some hippie graph saying "The chase for 715" or something similar. And speaking of PTI, I thought this was funny. Boston VS. NY Yankees = GREAT SUPER DOOPER FOR BASEBALL UConn VS. Tenn. = HORRIBLE FOR WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL And will they shut the fuck up already regarding that 14-year old soccer player? I don't blame the coach for not starting this kid. Oh, yeah. Mike, I never saw Barry Bonds as having a connection to Willie Mays ... ever ... ever...
Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted April 13, 2004 I'm more pissed that ESPN seems to think the Giants are the only baseball team in existence this season. They played the entire Houston series and then they had the Giants on the Sunday night game. I mean is it too muich to ask for them to have games with a different fucking team during the first week? Guest Salacious Crumb Report post Posted April 13, 2004 Man, ESPNews still hasn't come up for air from the verbal blowjobs to Barry. He's getting about 20 minutes of the 30 minute shows. God this is so uninteresting.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 13, 2004 My question is, why don't they act the same way when other athletes have similar accomplishments? Barry is now third on the all-time HR list. So that means they should have interrupted programming to show when Emmitt Smith or Barry Sanders made third on the NFL rushing list, right? They didn't make such a big deal when Karl Malone hit 3rd on the NBA scoring list, did they? I just don't see why going from 4th to 3rd is such a huge deal in baseball, but in other sports all that matters is No. 1.

nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2004 I know this makes me sound like a prick, but I was really hoping that Bonds wouldn't be able to do it, to pass Mays. I didn't want him dead or anything, but some serious injury that left him stuck at 659 forever. Now that he's passed Mays, I'm hoping for the same thing before he passes Ruth or Aaron. It just pisses me off to hear the jackasses on ESPN talk about when he breaks the records, not if he breaks them.

Ask random people if they know who holds the all-time rushing record, or NBA scoring record. Then ask them what the records are. Then ask them who holds the home run record, and with how many. A great deal more will know who holds the home run record. That's why it is treated on a higher plane.

More importantly, ask random people to rattle off the current top 10 All-Time HR leaders, or just the 500 club and chances are they can and more precisly can name the top 4 in order (and not just because its been ingranined since Bonds hit 600) of Aaron, Ruth, Bonds, Mays Ask them to name the top 10 NFL rushing leaders or touchdown leaders, or whatever the "elite number group" is. Ditto with NBA points, ect Maybe Hockey goals is the only other stat that gets the honored "Club" title that anyone can rattle off multiple names on Okay, baseball also has the 300 Wins and 3,000 hit club as well Also has something to do with memorabillia and merchandise as well Steve
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 14, 2004 Did you ever consider the reason WHY everyone can name off the Top 10 HR hitters but can't name the Top 3 NFL rushers? It's because the media is ALWAYS telling us who's on the baseball list. It's not like we came out of the womb knowing 755 - 714 - 660. It was years of Sportscenter, SI, Bob Costas and George Michaels hammering it into our heads. For some reason, the media has never placed as much of an importance on records in other sports. Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 14, 2004 You do know that a steroid user doesn't just take steroids, sit on the couch and get buff, right?. You have to work out to get the muscle mass, and the 'roids just give you a boost. So even if Bonds did use the needle, he had to back that up with some intense lifting. And as Ralph Wiley wrote, how is taking steroids any different than taking painkillers, cortizone shots, and getting surgery? All of them enhance your performance, right? If you use that logic, you can extend it to include eating and sleeping. They enhance performance as well.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted April 14, 2004 What if Bonds or any other player had used steroids? They weren't illegal according to the MLB rules. So unless they test positive know, they really broke no rules.
