An idea to improve mlb, contract ten teams.

I don't see Col or SD on your list of teams who made a profit. The Brewers made a profit because of a very low pay-roll and a new stadium, they were an awful team and attendence dwindled as the year went on.

Colorado lost around $4 million last year, and San Diego lost about $16 million.  But Colorado was a top ten team in total revenue last year, and like I said, once this new stadium is built for the Pads, they'll be packing them in.  The Brewers did have a low payroll, to be true, but their operating expenses were just SO much less than everyone else.  With their payroll and the average operating expenses (about $70 million) they would've lost $17 million.  Keeping your payroll low is part of it, but not the whole thing.

You also mentioned that Montreal had a "craptaculer" tv deal, why do you suppose that is?  Maybe because nobody in Montreal watches the games.  Another inherant probalem with Canaidian MLB teams is thet they have to pay salaries in US $, but all their gate $ is in the far lesser valued Canaidian $.

That's not how baseball is sold.  Teams don't go get TV deals because fans aren't able to get into games.  Teams get TV deals to advertise their games.  Let me use a wrestling analogy:  when independent promoters put their wrestling shows on TV, it's not for huge ratings (at first).  It's to get people interested in coming to the shows, where they actually make money.  Having an expansive TV deal not only serves to bring in revenue for an MLB team, but it also serves as a giant, three-hour long commercial for what's going on at the ballpark.  You need the TV deal to bring in the non-diehard baseball fans - the ones who aren't going to go to a game just because baseball rules all.  You gotta get the product out there, to show people who might not normally of coming out to the ballpark that there're worse things to do with an evening than to spend it in a club seat.  If they don't know, they won't come.

Damn, guys, I don't think we get PIX in Scranton anymore.  Of course, I got a dish at home, so usually on a good day, I can see the Cubs, Yankees, whoever ESPN has on, the Braves, and anybody straggling on Fox Sports Net.  So I'm relatively happy.
