Boston Might Lose Money on Democrat Convention

Ok, I don't even really care about that. This being a wrestling board and all, this is what caught my eye

Dusty Rhodes, who heads Conventures, the organizer of Sail Boston, confirmed the 2004 event was "locked and loaded and ready to go" in Boston and would have drawn more than 1 million people. By November 2003, however, it was clear the city's resources "were really being all focused on doing a great job with the Democratic National Convention."

Weird, huh? Imagine going through life with THAT name.

An article in the Boston Herald last week or so says Boston WILL lose money on the Convention, due to security costs and relocating some other events (including Sail Boston, which would have brought in a lot, but they have to move it to Newport, I believe)

How about Menino's quote when they were talking about the traffic problems that will happen: "We are sounding the alarm bell right now. We're saying that the sky is falling." Of course, it's Mumbles, so it came out "Weha......bell raaht now. Sayin....sky falling. They're gonna give us....uh...a spaceship."

Dear God,

Please don't tell me someone just used the Herald is a credible source. Everyone knows that it is becoming the same rag-ass tabloid it was, right before they nearly went out of business. Surprise, surprise: the Herald is about to go under again, and they just changed editors in order to "sensationalize sales." Or, should I say, "sensationalize stories." Please strike them down and beat them over the head with a stick. And then merely state the word, "No."

Thanks.

Your friend,

Now, for the real part: Why will Boston have the potential to lose money? Because they are shutting down the ONLY ROUTE THROUGH BOSTON. There's a reason why it's called the CENTRAL ARTERY. You'd think it's kind of obvious. Evidently not. Plus, they are closing off four commuter rail lines that run directly underneath the FleetCenter (soon to be known as the Boston Garden Presented by Bank of America...somebody shoot me). Without the ability to get in or out of the city easily to the north via rail, or any direction via car, it's hard to cash in. A lot of businesses in the North and West Ends will do will, I'm sure. But anyone else expecting to rake in money will be sorely mistaken.

Well, the Herald does have a decent Sports section and the Inside Track~! I love reading about where Nomar ate lunch three days ago.

To add to the laundry list of why having the Convetnion here (any national party convention) is that the courts are closed, the State House will close, and it will disrupt the entire city and everybody with half a brain will go on vacation to get away from this shit (I am).

Boston just isn't designed properly to have several thousand people come in for a week. There isn't enough space, the roads suck, there is construction every where, and who the fuck wants even more liberals in Massachusetts? We have enough of our own, we don't need to import them.

I keep hearing that they're going to have to shut the Fleet for up to 8 weeks prior to the DNC to make sure it's secure ... what about the Bruins or Celtics home games? If either make it deep enough in the postseason, the finals would be played within this 2 month window ... just our luck, the B's will make the Cup for the first time in 14 years and will have to play their 'home' games at the Centrum or in Providence.

It's times like this that I'm glad I know most of the backroads of Boston. I can just get off in Somerville or Cambridge and take the T, or just take the roads that circumvent the heart of Boston, and still get just about everywhere that I'll want to go.

Did you take the T today? I did. There was a chemical spill of some sort at Sullivan Square which caused Wellington, Sullivan, adn Community College (Yes the same one from Good Will Hunting) to be closed. Well, I drive in to Charlestown and get on Community College and go to State to get to the State House. So it took me 50 minutes to get there and 1 hour and 40 minutes to get home. Oh yeah it was fuckign raining today. I was very displeased, to say the very least.

On topic, the conversations I overheard while waiting for the shuttle bus st Haymarket went like this: "If it's this bad from a chemical spill what's going to happen when the convention comes?" and "This town can't even handle its own comuters, how is it going to handles thousands of extra people?" Me thinks the DNC won't be too popular, even in this fucked up state.

Remember when they had to shut down the Downtown Crossing T station because the change guy left a bag of coke on the counter? My mother and by brother's gf had to find another way to the hospital where my brother was.

Remember who the guy was? Ed Leslie. I shit you not.

I do remmeber that. Brutus "The Cokehead" Beefcake is now a fare collector for the T and fucked things up there. I guess it's not bad enough that he waqs a terrible worker for about 95% of his career, now he has to be a terrible collector. He actually lives in my town and came into my work one day to ask directions adn I marked out. Well, sort of. He asked me where some place was and I just stared at this huge guy thinking, "is that Brutus Beefcake". He noticed and laughed, I gave him the directions, he jumoed in his huge white SUV and drove off. Then he probably called Hogan and said, "See... some people mark out for me too. Now give that five bucks for the bet."
