Sound/Volume Problem

Last night I was freeing up some disk space and scanning with Spybot/Ad-Aware like I do every month, when for some reason, the volume control icon on my taskbar dissapeared. I didn't think much of it, and simply reset the computer. This didn't fix the problem though. Now I have no clue what's going on, so I open various applications and find that while Windows Media Player and Winamp DO have sound, Quicktime does not and Real Player says it "cannot open the audio device". So I open up the Sound/Audio Device manager from the control panel and it says under the volume section that there is no audio device. Device volume is inaccessible, as are speaker settings. Can somebody help me out here please?

Go to the Device Manager (under System in Control Panel) and delete your soundcard, then reboot and let it redect your drivers.

Okay, so I uninstalled SB Live like you said and reset, got it reinstalled, and reset again. After the Windows XP logo comes up it goes to a screen saying Windows couldn't start normally, and suggests a new hardware/software installation may be the problem. So I choose to re-enter Windows with the last configuration settings that worked, and I'm back where I started. What did I do wrong?

That I don't know. I use Win2k, and i've never had that issue before when I've deleted an existing piece of hardware.
