I'm sorry and i tried to comment on ultimo but some people can't handle differing opinions.

 

Instead of just throwing out comments, why not give examples to back up your opinions? Then your contribution is actually worth something and your not just opening yourself up to flames.

If you think this board is hard on you (hey Ricky, remember Stevie and his Toryumon article?), then I'd recommend you not head over to Spider Twist or Strong Style Spirit. Puroresu in this community is just an afterthought, those are the big puroresu boards, and if you try to make a simple statement like "Ultimo Dragon sucks" without anything to back up your statement, you'll have worse than just a couple of people giving you a hard time for wanting Austin to do well in Japan.

Once again, you're dragging an unrelated thread up. It makes zero sense that you won't give your reasons for disliking Ultimo Dragon because of the Austin in Japan thread (when I can think of three posts in said thread where people gave legit reasons). You obviously don't like UD and others obviously disagree. If you take a look in the pinned "matches to check out thread" you'll see Ultimo Dragon matches listed.

 

Also, I find it a little hypocritical of you to complain about others getting on your case, when you made the first post that drove this off topic by making the Speed 2 analogy.

Anthony is right on the money there. I'd rather shell out a little more cash to someone like Jeff Lynch because I know the VQ will be top notch, plus that and I can get recommendations on what are really the best matches.

If its just his Japanese work, I'd probably keep the two J*Crown matches, as well his IWGP Jr title win over El Samurai (which I thought was great for the time, and holds up over ten years later). I've got to see more of his WAR work though (like that Jericho match for instance),

I will say that I've seen a few WAR matches with Jericho, one has Ultimo in his regular wear and it's a solid match. Probably in the *** to ***3/4 area(don't hold me to that as I haven't watched it in a while), but there is a match that is a real beaut, and it's with Ultimo in an outfit that just is the mask and he is wearing tights(more like underwear, not full length) and that match I remember being incredible. It's on RF's best of Jericho if I remember correctly and was from IWA Hardcore in Japan, and I couldn't believe that either guy wrestled there. Actually, if I have time I might watch it soon now that I think about it. Also, I agree with all of his WCW stuff that you named as it rocked as well.

To be honest, I would have liked to see U.D. face different people. Seeing him face Liger over and over again sorta got a little stale for me. But still a good tape.

Total forgetting that the situation was bullshit..

 

Atleast in recent years, Ultimo has not been very good. I can remember back in 1996 him having a wonderful match with Psicosis. It had no reaction from the crowd and I remember one spot in particular that I sitll mock when wrestling with my friend Kerry. He runs, jumps on the second rope, jumps down, and kicks Psicosis. Of course the meaningless jump added to a boot to the stomach made it that much more devastating. Let me see if I remember his WCW formula. Kicks to the shins for his entire offense until he pulls out one of his signature moves. Oh yeah sometimes he'd include that moonsault that I've seen Rey Misterio and Shannon Moore do better and from the top rope. At WRESTLEMANIA this year he tripped on the aisle. Thats nothin big but I remember a goldberg .gif file on the internet of him tripping and it was the funniest thing on the earth (sarcastic). He got his dream job and couldn't cut it at his dream job because his only crowd reactions were for his dragon pyro and he didn't work to entertain the crowd. I've watched his WCW work and I wasn't blown away so unless this guy gets really good when he goes back home, Im not buying it.

I actually bought this tape last year on eBay in the UK for about £4 and I thought it was great. As I've stated before, I'm only just getting into Puro and I found this to be a great introduction to a wrestler I'd heard so much about, but hadn't seen. The match against Liger from the 95 J-Cup features some of the best matwork I've seen and the J-Crown matches against Ohtani and Sasuke made the tape well worth the meagre price I paid for it. While many people in this folder will likely own almost all the matches elsewhere, for a newcomer like myself, it was well worth the investment. Oh, and the picture quality was all fine too.

I've watched his WCW work and I wasn't blown away so unless this guy gets really good when he goes back home, Im not buying it.

Buy it. Dragon has had some of the best matches ever, including some fantastic work in America. Dragon vs Rey at WW3 1996 is one of the best American Juniors matches ever, and his really good match against Dean Malenko for the J*Crown. I will, though, agree that lots of his WCW work was subpar to what he can do.

 

However, Ultimo has had many ****+ classics over in Japan, including a classic against Shinjiro Ohtani in the 1996 J*Crown tourney and a great match against Jushin Liger in the 1995 Super J. His match against Liger on 1/4/97 is also must see, I'd call it ****1/2.

 

Judging him on his 2000+ work is stupid because he has not been very good since then. Sporadic really good matches have appeared, such as some fun stuff in Toryumon and a good match against Chavo Guerrero on Velocity in March. His stuff from the 90's, when he was at his peak, is some of the finest wrestling ever.
