times square kind of sucks, you won't miss much of anything if you don't go there.

Understatement. The place is an eyesore.

 

I've been to NYC twice and didn't really do anything "touristy" either time, outside of going to Central Park and MOMA. I prefered to just go wherever my (or my friends') mood dictated. I think I got a better feel for the city that way rather than by going to the Statue of Liberty or something.
