windows xp home edition vs windows xp professional

I am using the Windows 98 right now on my HP Pavilion 8660C computer. I think it time to upgrade to a new windows. I do not know which one to choose from. Which edition of XP is better, the home or the professional? When I do purchase one, would I lose all of my files from the 98 version or would it still be there? Overall tell me the postives and negatives of home edition vs professional edition? Which one would fit better with my CPU. Also My hard drvie is 20.4gb Ultra DMA hard drive and I have 128MB SDRAM memory. I hope you could help me.

I would probably recommend the Home Edition for you. It's cheaper, and I think it has all you would need.

 

And the best thing to do is back up all necessary files and install XP clean (that is, wipe the drive clean before installing). Make sure you backup your music, movies, saved games, documents, favorites and any other file you couldn't easily recreate. By that, I mean don't back up your applications because you can easily reinstall them.

 

Do you have a CD burner? That'll be your best bet with backing up.

Price is not important to me, I just want the best version. I have a cd burner. What are the necessary items that I have? What is included in the xp edition? Is there a way I can check? The only real thing I need to back up would be my music that the only thing I have really.

In my experiences, I've found Windows XP (pro mostly I've used home all of twice) that it runs slow with less then 256mb RAM. If you're going to pay to get a new version of windows you might want to look into a whole new computer. You can get complete Dell systems for around $400, that'll take care of a lot of your concerns, then you can just burn whatever you want to transfer over onto cd. But if you're just going for XP home vs. Pro go for Pro. If you're going to be using networks (like for school or work) Pro tends to be more friendly connecting to other computers.

Well he just needs RAM which is only about $20-30 bucks. XP will run fine on 128 if he doesn't use fast user switching.

This would be for home and entertainment puprose only. Then a little bit of school work, my computer is somewhat new, I just think it time to upgrade to a new windows. So for a entertainmen and home purpose, I guess the home version would be better for me? Does anyone have the home edition?
