OVW Report

May 26, 2004

A lot of you have been asking how my new gig in OVW is working out, and now that I'm settled in, I figured I'd give you my first impressions. The schedule itself is the biggest change for me. The 13 days straight on the road is a little hard, but for both me and my family the return pay off of having 8 full days home not to mention some weekends off, more than makes up for it. It's been almost 7 years since I've had weekends off so this is a big deal. Having days off when my kids aren't in school and when other couples have days off will make for a much more "normal" home life style.

My back is also feeling the benefits of my new job. With the exception of this past Monday when I took a bad bump in practice, my back hasn't felt this good in years. Yes I am still taking bumps. Actually I'm likely taking more bumps now than I did when I was working full time. The difference is I take my own bumps and can do them at my own pace and on my own terms. I've always been a believer in teaching by example so I have a hard time teaching from outside the ring. My back is also benefiting from the fact that I am logging so many fewer travel miles. Sitting in rental cars and on airplanes irritated my back as much as anything else and now that I only fly 3 days a month and don't drive long distances to shows my lumbar is bothering me less and less.

I guess that's enough of the non-job related benefits of the job. The question still remains do I actually like my new job in OVW and do I miss being an active wrestler? Well I guess that is two questions, but the answer, or answers is/are Yes and No . Yes I do like my new job. I feel important and useful again and I've always enjoyed teaching. The job is a little more work than I originally anticipated but I've never been afraid of hard work. Class preparation is taking up more of my free time than I figured. Continually coming up with new drills and ways for guys to learn and improve is an on going challenge but I think I'm succeeding to that end. The guys I'm working with are great. Everyone has made me feel welcome and seem genuinely grateful to have me here.

As for missing the active roster, I'm really not. It's weird, I thought I would, and perhaps down the road I may, but not right now. I miss the boys and some of the agents I was closest to but as for actually having matches and working the shows every night, I'm fine. I've always loved being in the ring, but I'm still doing that. I take part in the back stage work at OVW TV and going to the OVW house shows has been fun. The OVW shows are smaller shows than I've been to in maybe 12 years, but it's kind of cool seeing guys going through what I did, oh so long ago. I think when most guys retire from the ring, they completely retire and thus miss being a part of the business, with me I've just redirected myself in the industry so I will think I will miss it less than others. I guess only time will tell, but so far so good.

Till next week,

Lance
