Folder views

I'm using windows XP on my comp. In most of my folders, I prefer to view the files with the list preference. The default view on XP seems to be icons because it constantly changes back to them. It's very random, sometimes it switches as soon as I jump out of a folder and go back into it, other times it stays in the list view for days, then switches back.

 

Is this something fucked up on my system?

 

Is there somewhere where you can save the view? I know it's supposed to do that automatically, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

 

Is there anyway to change the default?
