i think anyone, regardless if their sick or not, or in pain or not, should be able to kill themselves. if someone is so emotionally miserable, and the only way he/she can think to end it is death, that's their choice. the fact that's it's illegal is such bullshit. i remember reading once about a guy who tried to kill himself, i think by jumping off a building, and in order to stop him, a cop shoots him...AND HE DIES ANYWAY!!! jesus, the stupitity is mind-boggeling.

what it boils down to is people not minding their own business...if someone is in pain, sick, miserable, old or just wants to end it...let them. it'd not your business. stop forcing your beliefs on everyone else. just because some one wrote that suicide was bad in a book 2,000 years ago, doesn't make it relevant today. leave it up to the individual. it's their lives, after all. it's their choice what they do with it.

Generally speaking seconded. We should let people kill themselves. Sure, some people can't stomach and they'll jump in. Family and friends will also try to prevent it.

But at least the government should keep its hands off of that final right.

And that made me laugh.

Also: the main reason that suicide is frowned upon so badly in Christian areas (read: Europe and every damned place Europe decided to conquer) can be found in martyrdom. It's a get out of hell for free card if you die for your faith in Jesus Christ. This was a powerful system and quite useful prior to ca. 400 AD.

Then Christianity (which would latter be classified as the Roman Catholic Church) became the new state religion and suddenly they weren't persecuted anymore.

A lot of people still got themselves killed to get to heaven, by desecrating old temples of Jupiter for example.

So suddenly a bunch of loyal followers were doing it like the lemmings. Dying, that is. The Church decided to make suicide the sin beyond all sins (save heresy) so that even a murderer was less worse than a suicider, as the murderer's victim had a chance to ascend to heaven regardless.

It worked. Hence why we frown upon suicide, unlike the Japanese who gut themselves for locking themselves out without keys.
