Guest thebigjig Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 We all know that the Bush administration has been extremely opposed to stem cell research... and yesterday on CNN I heard that Nancy Reagan has encouraged the Bush administration to help advance this research in hopes that we could somehow cure diseases such as alzheimers... I don't know alot about this subject and I'm at work and too lazy to look anything up... so why is Bush against this? What's the story behind it? Should the administration be a little more open minded when it comes to this? A common criticism of the Bush administration is their opposition to science... is that criticism warranted?
Stephen Joseph Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 I believe it has to do with embryos and bush's stance on abortion, which is where alot of stem cells come from i could be wrong
Spicy McHaggis Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Yes, Bush incorrectly thinks that embryos are needed for the research, when in fact, you can get stem cells from the umbilical cord after birth, and you can even get stem cells from your own body. I just wish he would understand that there just needs to be a provision banning stem cell research on embryos.

Stephen Joseph Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 I would imagine that the decision is based on actual reasoning...not just being an idiot Probably religious issues

In my previous post, just replace "Bush" and "he" with "the church" and you'll get the religious agenda.
