cawthon777 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2004 Question. I'm trying to note what W/WWF/E matches have been named Match of the Year by the Wrestling Observer since it began as a newsletter. Aside from Backlund / Patera in 80 and Patterson / Slaughter in 81, I'm not 100% sure of what other bouts were given the top spot. Maybe Savage / Steamboat, maybe Bret / Davey? I don't like assuming. Also, if anyone is aware of the Pro Wrestling Illustrated Matches of the Year from 2002 and 03, I'd appreciate it.
Guest drdrainoscott Report post Posted June 10, 2004 You know, I was just looking at an awards Observer a couple of days ago, and of course now I can't find it. Off the top of my head, I'm pretty sure that Bret/Austin won from 97 and Shawn and Marty's match from 93 won. I'm not 100% sure about those, but that is what is coming to my head right now. Bret/Davey I don't think did as War Games that year won I seem to think. Not sure about Savage/Steamboat. I'll try to find the issue in the morning to find out for sure. A few of those more recent picks has me even more confused It's loved because it's a pretty good match. WON (or was it PWTorch?) had it highly ranked for that year IIRC, but not quite enough to be number 1. Still, you're quite right regarding PWI. I'm not sure anymore which awards were fixed and which weren't. This coming from a long-time PWI subscriber, before I discovered the internet. pochorenella 0 Report post Posted June 10, 2004 2003-Kurt Angle Vs Brock Lesnar Iron Man Match (Kurt/Benoit rumble doesn't even cut top five...FUCK THIS MAGAZINE) I'm pretty sure Angle/Benoit was #1 runner up on PWI, I'll have to check it back at home. Still, it's supposed to be a FAN VOTE, so maybe more people saw the Lesnar/Angle Iron Man on SD! that the RR2003 match. And regarding the Observer and PWI comparisons, remember the WON includes wrestling from Japan and Mexico in their rankings. PWI practically never does that. Guest krazykat72 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 For fun, I thought I'd chime in with my opinion on each match. 1980 Bob Backlund vs. Ken Patera - did not see it, can't imagine it being great with Patera in there (he never really did much for me) 1981 Pat Patterson vs. Sgt. Slaughter (04/21/81) -excellent brawl, especially for the time, haven't seen enough from this era to know if this was a great pick 1982 Tiger Mask (Sayama) vs. Dynamite Kid (08/05/82)-My favorite match between these 2, even better than 4/21/83 because this has a clean finish. One of my personal favorites 1983 Ric Flair vs. Harley Race (11/24/83)- i did not particularly enjoy this match. I've seen better from the 2, and the ref job by Gene KiniskiI think) was atrocious 1984 Freebirds vs. Von Erichs (07/04/84)- I have not seen this match 1985 Kuniaki Kobayashi vs. Tiger Mask (Misawa) (06/12/85)-I have not seen this match 1986 Ric Flair vs. Barry Windham (02/14/86)-excellent, but they had better, don't know if it's a MOTY, but very good 1987 Rick Steamboat & Randy Savage (03/29/87)-great match, slightly overrated. I actually prefer Flair/Windham from 3/87 1988 Ric Flair vs. Sting (03/27/88)-a great Flair carry job and the match that made Sting. I don't know if i can rate it a MOTY, but very good 1989 Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair (04/02/89)- The best match of their series and a fine choice 1990 Jushin Liger vs. Naoki Sano (01/31/90)-I did not see this, but I can't imagine it topping Misawa/Jumbo 1991 Steiners vs. Hase & Sasaki (03/21/91)- very good match, I personally prefer the Rockers/Orient Express from the Rumble 1992 Kobashi & Kikuchi vs. Furnas & Kroffat (05/25/92)-I have not seen this match 1993 Kansai & Ozaki vs. Toyota & Yamada (04/11/93)- I have not seen this match 1994 Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (03/20/94)- having recently rewatched this, it remains to me a truly wonderful, influential and momentous match. It doesn't age badly in the least, and the psychology of the match is still spot on. I preferred it to Bret/Owen back then and I still do now. My head says I have to put Kawada/Misawa above it, but I'm following my heart. 1995 Manami Toyota vs. Kyoko Inoue (05/07/95)-I did not see this match, but I can't imagine it was better than 6/9/95 1996 Misawa & Akiyama vs. Williams & Ace (06/07/96) This was a great tag match, but not as good as the Misawa & Akiyama vs. Kawada & Taue match from 12/96 or Michaels/Foley, or Hart/Austin 1997 Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (03/23/97)- very good, but I prefer 11/96 as well as Misawa/Kobashi 1/97 and 10/97, as well as Michaels/UT 10/97 1998 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (10/31/98)- no arguments here 1999 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (06/11/99)- no arguments here 2000 Atlantis vs. Villano III (03/17/00) I have not seen this match 2001 Keiji Mutoh vs. Genichiro Tenryu (06/08/01)- very good, but I never got onto the Mutoh bandwagon that year. I thought Angle/Austin, Austin/Benoit 5/31 were both better 2002 Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit vs. Edge & Rey Mysterio (10/20/02)- very good match in a weak year for them 2003 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (03/01/03)- good match, not up to the level of the prior ones, but emotional. I put Kobashi/Nagata 9/03. Marufuji & Kenta vs. Hashi and Kanemaru & Hashi 9/03, Benoit/Angle 1/03 and even Michaels/Jericho 3/03 above it. -Paul Jacobi-
Guest momoracci Report post Posted June 11, 2004 1989 Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair (04/02/89)- The best match of their series and a fine choice I liked their Chi-Town Rumble match the best; just thought the faster pace made for a more entertaining match. Still, I wouldn't put either of these matches ahead of Jumbo/Tenryu 6/89. 1990 Jushin Liger vs. Naoki Sano (01/31/90)-I did not see this, but I can't imagine it topping Misawa/Jumbo I've only got the clipped version (about 14 minutes) and it's not as good as either Jumbo/Misawa match from 1990. Granted, it was an excellent cap to their feud but Jumbo/Misawa opened the door to greater things. 1992 Kobashi & Kikuchi vs. Furnas & Kroffat (05/25/92)-I have not seen this match Get it! Perhaps the best Southern Style match in history, with an absolutely MOLTEN crowd. But, in 1992, everything plays second fiddle to Toyota/Yamada vs. Kansai/Ozaki from 11/26. 1993 Kansai & Ozaki vs. Toyota & Yamada (04/11/93)- I have not seen this match Not close to their match the prior year and not a great choice with Hokuto/Kandori 4/2, Hansen/Kobashi 7/29, and several more that would top it. 1994 is Misawa/Kawada in a romp for me. 1995 Manami Toyota vs. Kyoko Inoue (05/07/95)-I did not see this match, but I can't imagine it was better than 6/9/95 An insane choice - the above mentioned 6/95 smokes it really badly. This is Dave's readership marking for Toyota in a 60 minute match. 1996 Misawa & Akiyama vs. Williams & Ace (06/07/96) This was a great tag match, but not as good as the Misawa & Akiyama vs. Kawada & Taue match from 12/96 or Michaels/Foley, or Hart/Austin Under the Observer timeline, this is a fine choice. It's not close to the RWTL 96 Finals but that fell in December, so... 1997 Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (03/23/97)- very good, but I prefer 11/96 as well as Misawa/Kobashi 1/97 and 10/97, as well as Michaels/UT 10/97 I liked this match a lot at the time but once I started getting loads of Puroresu, it really couldn't compare to things like Misawa/Kobashi and Tamura/Han from January. It also takes a backseat to Rey/Eddy from Havoc, which is my favorite U.S. match ever. 1998 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (10/31/98)- no arguments here 1999 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (06/11/99)- no arguments here I think these are two of the worst Misawa/Kobashi matches - headdropping and finisher death really doesn't do it for me. I'll take Tamura & Kohsaka's 30 minute mat masterpiece from 6/98 and either Aja/Satomura 9/99 or one of Mariko Yoshida's best matches from that year. My interest has waned since the beginning of the decade - quality wise, things just aren't the same. Anthony
Guest Dynamite Kido Report post Posted June 11, 2004 I also figured that I would chime in with my opinion on as many of these that I have seen. 1981 Pat Patterson vs. Sgt. Slaughter (04/21/81) -I have actually never seen this one. I have it on the WWE Hall of Fame DVD and I yet have had a chance to watch the matches. I haven't really seen too much out of 1981 to really compare it to anyways(except for the TM/Dynamite matches). 1982 Tiger Mask (Sayama) vs. Dynamite Kid (08/05/82) -This was a great match and honestly, I couldn't see too much coming close to this. Definately one of my favorites of all time. 1983 Ric Flair vs. Harley Race (11/24/83) -I would have to agree with KrazyKat above and basically say that Kiniski's shitty refereeing really hurts this one. His horrendously slow count at the end of this doesn't help much either. I did like the match however, it's just Kiniski hurts it a LOT. 1984 Freebirds vs. Von Erichs (07/04/84) -Now I can't say that I have ever seen this one, so I really can't comment on it. But if I had a choice I'd go with Martel/Flair from AJPW from 1984. 1985 Kuniaki Kobayashi vs. Tiger Mask (Misawa) (06/12/85) -This match is a very solid choice as both men work a solid match in this one. The only other match I can think of off the top of my head that I would have picked over this would have been the Magnum T.A. vs. Tully Blanchard - "I quit" Steel Cage. 1986 Ric Flair vs. Barry Windham (02/14/86) I can't recall ever seeing this match but I doubt it's better than the one that they had less than a year later at Battle of the Belts II. But I can easily live with this one as they always seem to work well together. 1987 Rick Steamboat & Randy Savage (03/29/87) -I think I would have to say that the 3-27 Flair/Windham is better than this, but Steamboat/Savage is one of my all time favorites....so I won't argue with that choice. 1988 Ric Flair vs. Sting (03/27/88) -Not a BAD choice, but personally I liked Hansen/Gordy vs. Kawada/Tenryu AJ Real World Tag League Final better than Sting/Flair. 1989 Ricky Steamboat vs. Ric Flair (04/02/89) -Quite possibly my favorite match of all time, so no argument there. 1990 Jushin Liger vs. Naoki Sano (01/31/90) -AWESOME match, but honestly it's not better than either of the Misawa/Jumbo matches from the same year. 1991 Steiners vs. Hase & Sasaki (03/21/91) Good choice in my book. I would have also accepted Owen Hart vs. Liger (4/27/91) 1992 Kobashi & Kikuchi vs. Furnas & Kroffat (05/25/92) -I have never seen this one, but I have heard great things. My pick would have probably been either Liger vs. El Samurai (4/30/92) or Bret Hart vs. Bulldog - Summerslam 92. 1993 Kansai & Ozaki vs. Toyota & Yamada (04/11/93) I've never seen this one. I would have picked Misawa/Kobashi vs. Taue/Kawada (Real World Tag League tournament match 12/3/93) 1994 Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels (03/20/94) -This one really boggles my mind. Now don't get me wrong, I do like this match. It's just not better than a whole handful of matches of 1994. This one IMO couldn't touch, Owen vs. Bret (Wrestlemania X,El Hijo Del Santo & Octagon vs. "Love Machine" Art Barr & Eddy Guerrero -When Worlds Collide, Misawa vs. Kawada ( 6/3/94), or Great Sasuke vs. Jushin Liger (4/16/94). 1995 Manami Toyota vs. Kyoko Inoue (05/07/95) -I've never seen this match, but IMO it was the worst year of all time for North American wrestling in general and Japan was thriving throughout the year. Also, considering all the good stuff I have heard about this match......I won't argue. 1996 Misawa & Akiyama vs. Williams & Ace (06/07/96) I like the match above, but for my money I'd go with Misawa/Akiyama vs. Kawada/Taue (5/23/96) 1997 Bret Hart vs. Steve Austin (03/23/97) -Definately the best North American match of the year, but Misawa/Kobashi 1/20/97 blows this one out of the water. 1998 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (10/31/98) -Agreed 1999 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (06/11/99) -Agreed 2000 Atlantis vs. Villano III (03/17/00) I've never seen the talked about match. I would go with the TLC at Wrestlemania or Tenryu/Kawada 10/28/00). 2001 Keiji Mutoh vs. Genichiro Tenryu (06/08/01) -I was SHOCKED when I watched this one for the first time. Honestly it may be Mutoh's last great match. 2002 Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit vs. Edge & Rey Mysterio (10/20/02) -Agreed 2003 Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Kenta Kobashi (03/01/03) Well, it has one of the greatest bumps I've ever seen and it doesn't stand up against their matches of the past. Only match I would put above it that year is Angle/Benoit Royal Rumble.

I personally find it to be better than Bret/Owe, which I'd put at ****1/4 and a great match, this match was innovative and unlike anything people had seen at the time. I know there had been some ladder matches before, but this one, on the biggest show of the year to be worked so well and to use the gimmick so greatly and creatively makes it legendary. I thought the Barr/Guererro vs. Santo & Octagon was extremely good, but a cut below the others mentioned. The Benoit/Sasuke match is just as good, but the novelty of the ladder and the fact that it was such a smartly worked gimmick match nods it ahead for me. Looking back now, I would definitely pick 6/3/94 as the MOTY.

Since then I have watched the ladder match and I still really enjoy it very much. I just think that even though it was a vital and important match at the time(TajiriBuzzkill speaks of this), it's just not as special as it used to be and loses some of it's luster. On the other hand though, the other three matches I named are stellar regardless of the time period or anything else. Just to let you know, I will always favor matches that don't use a gimmick(ladder, TLC, Steel Cage etc) because the workers have less to work with and thus have to work harder to get the match to a "classic" point. But this in no way means I don't like the ladder match.
Guest krazykat72 Report post Posted June 11, 2004 I think part of the reason I'm able to enjoy that match so much, is because even now *in spite of all the imitations*, I'm still able to look back at it and see it as a fabulously worked match. To me, it stands up just as well, and may even be *more* special because even though lots of those type matches have taken place since then, none (possibly barring the Benoit/Jericho one) have been as well worked or incorporated the gimmick so well. I enjoy the TLC matches from a spot standpoint, but the logic gaps in them hurt it. They spent all this time setting up tables and ladders while they could have been getting the belts, etc. The Michaels/ Ramon match used the ladder in a more convincing way without sacrificing logic. -Paul Jacobi-

I just don't think it compares with the selling of Kawada in the 6/4 match(this could be the most brilliant match I've ever seen), the sheer awesomeness of Benoit/Sasuke, and the tag team greatness that the When World's collide tag brought.....
