Normally if I think something needs hammered into the darkness, I close it rather than delete it so that no one runs around asking where their thread went. It also allows me to say why it was closed. I normally close stuff in the first few posts so I don't see the point of the merge since the whole thing was redundant in the first place.

You could delete the closed topic after 2 days. That way people don't ask where it is.

 

Or you could leave it there.

You could just delete the thread and pm the creator to tell them what you did and why.

Hopefully after 2 days it'll have fallen off the main page, and won't really be a concern any more.

 

Locking, as opposed to deleting offers a couple of advantages - it stops a bunch of "where did the ____ thread go" posts, for one. The other is that it allows people to still view the "legitimate" responses, after the closing.
