Next gen favors Nintendo...

Bold Prediction: Sony will rush out a system that is not quite as good as Microsoft's... however the 3 month advantage will give them a large lead in the console wars

On IGN.com they reported that most likely X box 2 will launch in 2005 with the next gen Nintendo system a few months later. They also said PS3 likely wont come out until 2007 and will include Sony's new high definition DVD technology, Blue Ray.

PS3 2007?

I think Ps3 will sell just fine because of the thousands of ps2 and ps1 games people already own. X box 2 might also do very well with the early release date, but they need to get sales going in Japan. I just don't know what ti think about Nintendo however.

And yeah, PS3 will probably fall apart but im probably gonna buy one.

So essentially the PSP is the GameGear all over again. GREAT

If the PS2 had performed as well in the marketplace as the Master System, or if the PSP didn't have a lineup of software that looks interesting even before launch, sure.

Of course, if you mean it in the sense that it actually does have a snowball's chance of competing with the GBA, sure.

However, what's this noise about a follow up to the DS a few years later?! WTF!!?

Where Squeenix goes, so go I.

Why? All of the systems are going to have plenty mediocre games littered with CGI cinemas and little actual gameplay.

I can't honestly be the only one that hopes Sony gets their ass kicked with the PS3. A company as dominant as they are is not good for the video game industry. It's always best when we have two comparable video game powers battling it out.

Nintendo only rivals Sony if you count the portables, and X-Box is doing pretty damn good but in Japan it is still underperforming.

Oddly, right now the actual game sales for X-Box are mostly kicking the PS2 game sales' asses.

RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMOOOOOORRRRS

Almost everything in this thread is an unconfirmed rumor taken as fact. That's sad.

Anyway, I doubt Nintendo will have the edge in the next gen. They're lazy, short-sighted, and now they've gone insane about how they want to change the most basic fundamentals of gaming because somehow the industry is dying. All this dying is restricted to Nintendo. If they took their blinders off and opened themselves up to seeing what other people are doing, they'd see that people are making good money.

A game industry run by Microsoft or Sony is a bad thing, so I hope Microsoft can eventually reach the point where they begin making money in the Xbox department, because those two ripping each other's throats out is good for all of us.

If Sony makes a new system make it so it doesn't break!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's the most important thing they have to do. I actually like the Gamecube as a system better (and I have a Playstation 2, not a Gamecube) because it loads up right away and it doesn't break. So much less frustration.

Exactly.

Since the Playstation era increased the users of consoles vastly, the market may even be large enough to accommodate three different consoles simultaneously and keep them each very strong. It seems to be moving towards that, possibly.

Nintendo has the kids and young adults, but most of the good stuff is on GBA. The Gamecube lacks a game library to keep them satifisfied, let alone move beyond that.

PS2 seems to be young adults and teens.

X-Box seems to be college-age and above...

That is, in general. Obviously, there's a lot of overlap as far as hardcores and so on. Also, I think the GBA is played by a hell of a lot of different ages. I don't think the NES Classics series would be a wise move unless there were a sizeable portion of old NES gamers who had picked up GBAs. Then again, programming costs are next to nil.

I think one major problem with Nintendo is, sad to say, Miyamoto. He's creative and brilliant but as far as being in touch with the modern gamers he comes up short. The Gamecube controller is his baby, because he longs for the old two-button NES era games, for instance.

The DS seems to be tailor-made for the Japanese market, but I don't know if it such a good idea for the U.S.

Thing about GBA is that it's always been the only REAL player on the block. Game Gear was screwed because Sega was busy imploding by having WAY too much crap hardware on the market at once. The Lynx was a better system, but Atari was effectively still dead from the old days. The other systems had no prayer.

This, honestly, looks like the first REAL challenger to Nintendo --- and given that Nintendo tends to be bad with 3rd party relations, I could see them losing a lot of 3rd party support in the future and having the same problems they have now with their systems --- such a tiny trickle of games that bad games look so much worse.

Fact: Sony has Nintendo's number.

They certainly don't have it when it comes to building reliable hardware.

My original NES - still works

My original SNES - still works

My original N64 - still works

My original Gamecube - err..it was stolen but my replacement still works

I got all of them about the time they were released except for the NES. The only Nintendo made system that I've owned that crapped out on me was my original Game Boy that I got when it was released, but it lasted almost 8 years before the screen went bad.

The HD DVD format Blu-Ray, isn't backwards compatible with regular DVDs and CDs unless a second red laser is added to the device. Im sure they would add that 2nd laser, but theres more extra parts to be added that could cause the thing to not work (or just not read old DVDs/Games).

I'm a Nintendork. I vomited into my SNES once and it's still running. YUS!!1

Hey .. what's wrong with the GC controller? I like it, it's incredibly easy to use .. the only real flaw is the Z key. They should have given us an extra set of R&L instead.

And I think Nintendo will do fine. They have one market cornered, which is the "pure underage gamer" market. Fun games, interesting concepts, cheap hardware. Though I sure as hell would like a console-dvd player-internet station. That'd be awesome.

Nintendo is pulling Sega-quality screw-ups these days. They've announced the DS, but they've already announced that *another* hand-held will follow it in about 2007, and if the DS flops it will come sooner.

Pffft.

Also, anyone who releases the NES version of Donkey Kong, by itself, without even all the levels, for TWENTY BUCKS are some shameless money-grubbers. Mario Bros I could see...even though they should have ported All Stars. Zelda I could see...even if they should have ported a collection of the 8/16-bit Zeldas. Xevious even, cuz that rocked.

However, DONKEY KONG?! The NES DONKEY KONG with 3 stages?! The one that could be beat in less than 10 minutes?!

Nintendo, you should be ashamed of yourself. An upgraded Donkey Kong Classics with the original (with Cement Factory restored), Jr, DK3, DK Jr. Math for the hell of it I would consider worth buying. Not that though. What a ripoff.

Did I mention in Japan they released Mario Bros. as a Famicom Mini game? You know, the same game Superstar Saga and the Mario Advance titles all had in it, except with better graphics, up to four players, and without the need to own two carts to play against others?

I like Nintendo but if they're going to pull crap like that, even I, Mr. Anti-Emulation, would be all for emulating them...if not for the Zelda Collection, the All Stars cart I already have, and the Game Boy Donkey Kong.

"Hey .. what's wrong with the GC controller? I like it, it's incredibly easy to use .. the only real flaw is the Z key. They should have given us an extra set of R&L instead."

I don't like it for fighting games, because unlike most controllers that are somewhat fighting game friendly, it has a completely screwed-up layout.

I've yet to hear anyone give me a good reason *why* it needs to be the way it is. It's confortable for almost all games...but fighters. Since the PS controllers are almost perfect save for the d-pad, I don't see the net gain.

It can't be that Sony has the design trademarked, because the PS controllers are almost direct ripoffs of the SNES controller, and secondly because Sony should be suing the makers of countless ripoffs, including a ton of PS clone controllers you see for the PC.

I think the X-Box controller is worse though, because of the bulkiness and the idiotic placement of the black and white buttons.

Of course, the Gamecube controller is arguably better than the N64 controller--now that was a cheap-feeling piece of crap. I've had two analog sticks snap like twigs for me on that.

I'm somewhat loyal to Nintendo because I loved the SNES and the GBA. However, nearly every criticism I have about the PSP is found in the DS, plus there are more things to gripe about besides.

Try running a gameported to all systems. The PS2 and Xbox ports control fine usually, because the controller design mirrors it but not exactly (the Xbox controller doesn't have both sticks in the middle like the PS2 does, but that's actually more of a problem with the PS controller.) But basically the Cube's controller is so different that any game that depends on using four buttons for four different tasks will find themselves assigning important stuff to X and Y, which look like secondary "forget about these" buttons next to A and B.

My problem is that it's too small for my hand, mainly.

It's innovative! Look at the buttons! They're shaped like beans!
