Casting Call Goes Out For Lois Lane

A casting call has gone out to agents for the role of Lois Lane, a "recurring guest star for the first four episodes" of Season Four.

 

The breakdown describes Lois as "caucasian, smart, beautiful, urban, headstrong, and no-nonsense." It says she was an Army kid who moved around every two years. She lost her mother at a young age and helped to raise her young sister, which made her mature beyond her years.

 

Her father, Sam Lane, is a "high-ranking general" in the U.S. Army. Lois has no room for small talk or superstition, and she has a long history of defying her father and asserting her independence.

 

The breakdown says that Sam always wanted a son rather than a daughter and thus raised Lois to be hard as nails, like a perfect soldier. Lois hides her vulnerability with sarcasm and wit... much like her cousin, Chloe.

 

At this point in her life, Lois is in her early twenties and has no interest in journalism. She's in Smallville to investigate the death of Chloe. (We still don't believe Chloe is dead, so don't worry!)

 

Breakdowns have also gone out for the role of Jason Teague, who is in his early 20's and "incredibly handsome and sexy." He was raised a rich kid in Metropolis. He likes to escape to far away places every summer, and this time it happens to be Paris. "Jason is the guy everyone wants as his best friend," the breakdown says. Jason is a football player who is always looking to spite his parents. He's currently pursuing a degree in education at Metropolis University. Jason could be from a Caucasion or Latino background, and the role is a "series regular."

 

Added 6/14: A new possibly ongoing character is coming to Smallville. The character is Jason Teague, an American college junior who is "charming, broad-shouldered," and will definitely serve to open Lana up a little bit. The two of them meet in Paris, and he may be coming back to the "leafy little hamlet" with her. They have a great time in Europe, racing through the Alps on a motorbike, seeing the Notre Dame, and more. (Oh, and those of you who are snarking that it'll be on a Vespa and not a real motorbike - go to the head of the class!)

- Apparently Lex is going to come visit Lana in Europe. Guess that means he'll be okay "I feel like I'm not the person he said goodbye to. I've changed so much," Lana says. One might even be able to gleam that over the summer Lana had developed some feelings for him.

 

Added 5/28: Tom Welling told reporters at the WB Upfronts that everyone will be returning, except for Sam Jones III, who may show up from time to time in guest spots.

 

Added 5/20: All indicators imply that all seven of the show's regular cast will survive the finale cliffhangers... unless, of course, they're trying to trick us! How they'll pull this off is anyone's guess!

- Two things we can tell you: Lana will return from Paris with possibly a new style, and Lionel will look harder-edged than before now that he is in prison and his mane has been removed.

 

Added 5/19: Michael Rosenbaum talked to SCI FI Wire about Lex Luthor's potential journey into evil. "The great part is that fans embrace the character," he said. "He's not just going from good to bad right away. It's the journey to try and prevent the inevitable."

- Michael also confirmed that Lex will be taking a darker path. "Lex is just trying to stay focused and do the right thing," Rosenbaum said. "But he keeps going and drifting off. The powers that be—one of them being his father [John Glover as Lionel Luthor]—just push him further and further to the dark side. That's where they're heading. People always say, 'Oh, what's going to happen with Lex? We saw a little sparkle in his eye.' There's always that, and there's always finding out the truth. I think the finale is very important."

- Tom Welling appeared on some news stations on May 18 to talk about Season 4. In the brief clip, Tom talked about Season 4 having "a new love interest," "a new power," and of course, Clark and Lex's friendship taking a turn.

 

 

Added 5/18: Updated: An interview with actor Michael McKean online at USAToday.com said this: "McKean is set to appear as Edna through September, before joining the cast of the WB series Smallville, which includes his wife, Annette O'Toole." Unfortunately, though, it seems the interviewer misunderstood. While Michael will likely be returning as Perry White, there are currently no known arrangements for him to be a regular on Smallville... although they are talking about having him appear in Season 4 on a "semi-regular" basis! The more Perry White, the better for us! Let's hope it happens!

- Executive Producer Al Gough has said in interviews that he'd like to bring Lois Lane or Jimmy Olsen on to the series. However, there are no definitive plans, and the development of a Superman movie project may get in the way.

- Also because of movies... specifically next year's "Batman Begins," it is very unlikely a young Bruce Wayne will show up on Smallville.

- Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk, Michael Rosenbaum, Annette O'Toole, John Schneider, John Glover, and Allison Mack are all listed on the WB's website as coming back next season. The only name missing, of course, is Sam Jones III, who left in the episode "Forsaken."

That's pretty cool. Hopefully, this will end some of the "Chloe will come back as Lois" rumors. It should be interesting to see who ends up playing Lois.

I'm going to be pissed if people didn't die after that finale. They really need to turn a corner with getting the writing together, and that just might force them to do it.

Oh and Angel was the only WB show to actually show a gain in ratings this year.

 

So I got the new Entertainment Weekly (Tom Hanks cover), and there’s a report on the final ratings for every broadcast series from the past season. Curiousity got the best of me, and I decided to check out how The WB’s shows stacked up. Obviously, I did it out of my Angel fandom.

 

Get this: of the top seven WB shows, Angel was the ONLY ONE that posted a gain this year. Its overall ratings were up 8%. That’s not super-huge, but it’s fairly significant for a show in its fifth season. The other six all dove, some precipitously. 7th Heaven dropped 15%. Smallville plummeted by a stunning 25% from last year. Everwood and Charmed both dropped 4%. Reba lost 11%. And critical darling Gilmore Girls went down 21%. For an even more shocking number, the final episode this year posted almost 1.5 million more viewers than normal; stunningly the numbers for the finale even beat the numbers for the finale of its parent show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Clearly, something was going on here.

 

Makes me even more mad that it was cancelled. Don't get me wrong. I love Smallville.

Hmm not to make excuses but, I wonder if it has to do with Smallville getting a new time and day this past season. Really I didn't like it on Wednesday at 7. Tues at 8 seemed so perfect for some reason.

The thing about Smallville is that it has about 15 or so writers. Plus the fact that Miles Millar hasn't written an episode since season 1 and Alfred Gough hasn't written an episode since season 2 (the first episode), who are both the creators.

 

I find it odd that both creators don't write episodes anymore, unless they left the show and I didn't know about it.

Smallville's ratings were down because the show wasn't as good as it used to be. They went back to the "monster of the week" stuff, which they should be past now this being the 3rd season and all.

No kidding. I swear I think Lana is the dumbest person in Smallville. Everytime she dates a man, he turns out to be a superpowered psycho. Clark then tries to tell her about it but, Lana doesn't believe him and thinks that he is jealous. Ok, never mind the fact that Clark has been right about it the last HUNDRED times or so and had to save her ass because of her being a dumbass, you would think Lana would get a clue and believe Clark for once.

 

At least, Chole has a clue and believes him, more or less, no matter how off the wall things Clark tells her.

CCI, DAY 3: "SMALLVILLE" PANEL AT CCI, SEASON 4 DETAILS

Thousands of people attended the "Smallville" panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego this year to celebrate their beloved superhero drama series. Having just concluded its third season with a major cliffhanger, "Smallville" has never been more popular. Fans eagerly await the next season to find out just what happened to Clark, Lana, Lex, and the rest of the gang. Producers Al Gough and Miles Millar were in attendance, as well as creative consultant and comic heavyweight Jeph Loeb. Rounding out the panel were cast members Allison Mack ("Chloe Sullivan"), John Glover ("Lionel Luther") and the newest member of the "Smallville" team, Erica Durance ("Lois Lane"). CBR News was there to bring you all the information from this exciting panel.

 

Perhaps the biggest shift in "Smallville's" formula is the introduction of Lois Lane, Clark Kent's future wife. Erica Durance portrays a Lois that is a year older than Clark, somewhat neurotic, and very much not interested in journalism. She appears in Smallville looking for her cousin Chloe who seems to be dead. Durance is currently scheduled to appear in 13 episodes next season. What does this mean for Clark's relationship with Lana? Gough and Millar promise that Clark and Lana will not be together for at least a season. Lana has a new love interest that she meets in Paris, but who is actually an American, something that will develop the character in a new direction: "We're going to see a whole new Lana." With his love interest away and involved, Clark must deal with his slowly descending best friend, Lex Luthor. "The relationship between Clark and Lex is absolutely crucial in how Clark becomes Superman," explained the producing duo, adding a note about the fine line between good and evil, "That's how great villains see themselves, as heroes."

 

Despite lots of anticipation among fans, Millar admitted that DC's Dark Knight will not be appearing in season four of "Smallville" due to upcoming Batman film. "With Batman Begins coming out next summer, [the appearance of Bruce Wayne] was put on the back burner." He did, however, suggest that a well known piece of Superman comic mythology will come to the show next season, as well as a bigger part for Martha Kent. "Annette O'Toole is great. She and Mr. [John] Glover will have more scenes together. She's the most underused resource in the show." For all you Tom Welling fans out there, season four promises to explore Clark as a developing teenager. Gough said, "We'll see if Clark can have sex."

 

Not much is known about the season four premier episode, except that Cark Kent is going to fly for the first time in the show's history. Despite some speculation that there is more there than meets the eye, this is certainly a departure from the "Smallville" mantra "no flights, no tights". The character of Pete Ross is no longer a regular cast member, but may have some guest appearances next season. Gough and Millar also promise the return of some old villains, as well as some characters that they are awaiting permission from DC Comics to use. Expect to see the unpredictable effects of red kryptonite come up again, the return of Christopher Reeve, and the possible introduction of the Fortress of Solitude.

 

With the fate of each of the characters uncertain, the audience at the panel was full of questions for both cast and crew. Allison Mack complimented her experience on "Smallville" and received a warm reception from the fans. A different kind of warm reception came from the female contingent of the audience when John Glover came on the stage. He was both humble and hilarious as one audience member offered to be his romantic interest. "This part I have with Lionel is the best I've ever had!" Glover jokingly assured the audience that Lionel is our friend and that "Lionel is not an evil man, he is driven." Fans of "Smallville" remember the striking visual of Lionel with a shaved head during season three's finale episode. When asked if he approved of this aesthetic alteration, John Glover told the audience that it was his idea.

 

Al Gough talked a little about future plans for "Smallville." "We had a five year plan [for the series] that became a four year plan, so we have one year left on it. But, it will go on as long as you guys [the viewers] want it to go." Both producers see a future for the series beyond Clark in his high school days, but say that they will end the series before Clark becomes Superman. One member of the audience asked if Tom Welling was being offered the role of Superman in the upcoming film, to which the answer was no. After the audience expressed their disapproval, Gough reminded the audience, "Look, it's not my f-ing movie, okay?!"

It has just been revealed by Kryptonsite that Bart Allen(aka Impulse, Kid Flash) will appear this year in Episode 5. Of course his origin will be different since in the comics he is from the future.
