With Star Wars I'd actually recommend buying the X-Wing novels from Michael Stackpole and Aaron Allston.

These are from the early days of Image and don't really stand up. A Shadowhawk TPB can be had for cheap I think.

 

Everything else, as I've said before, if it's a bargain basement price then by all means pick them up and see if you like it.
