OVW TV Review

Recommended Posts

I was bored while visiting the hometown this weekend and I caught my first OVW show in over a month. This was the end result.

------

OVW Wrestling TV Report for July 10, 2004

-Show Open

-Your announcers are Jim Cornette and Dean Hill.

-Matt Capotelli vs. Mike Mondo w/ Kenny Bolin and Jerome Crony

-Mondo wants a test of strength. Capotelli goes in and gets a thumb to the eyes for his trouble. The two reverse wristlocks as Kenny Bolin joins us for commentary. He says “Mean” Gene Mondo, Mike Mondo’s little brother who is 7 months younger than Mike (that’s not a typo), will soon be joining Bolin Services. Mondo gets whipped into the corner and is back dropped by Capotelli. Capotelli drops a leg and goes to the top rope, but is stopped by Mondo. Capotelli goes over the top rope after Mondo ducks a body press attempt. Mondo with some mounted punches. He goes for the pin, but only gets a one count. Mondo locks in a chinlock, but Capotelli quickly powers out. Mondo reverses Capotelli’s Irish whip. A hotshot gets two for Mondo. Mondo hits a top-rope splash for two. Capotelli catches a quick inside cradle for two. Mondo gets back on the offensive by whipping Capotelli into the corner. He follows him in and gets hit with a boot. Capotelli is a house of fire, hitting three clotheslines. He hits a neckbreaker for two. Capotelli whips Mondo into the ropes and hits a spinebuster. He only gets two, as Mondo got his foot on the bottom rope. Crony distracts the referee and slides the Bolin Services briefcase into Mondo. Mondo hits Capotelli with the briefcase and gets the pin. A decent match, but some parts seemed a bit jumpy. * ½

-We’re treated to Cena highlights from his Great American Bash match.

-Cornette interviews Matt Morgan. Morgan proceeds to deliver a very bad promo about what he’s going to do to Cena. He also manages to get the theme park’s name and date wrong.

-Joey Matthews vs. Johnny Jeter

-This is Jeter’s OVW return after being out for four months. Matthews wins the lock-up. Matthews takes Jeter down into a pinning position for two with a headlock. Both get back to their feet and lock up. The two reverse wristlocks and Matthews gets another headlock on Jeter. Jeter breaks the headlock by throwing Matthews into the ropes. Matthews hits a shoulderblock. He hits ropes again but is hit by a Johnny Jeter dropkick. Jeter then clotheslines Matthews over the top rope. Matthews is quick to recover and pulls Jeter out under the bottom rope. Jeter then throws Matthews back in. Matthews quickly gets back to his feet and catches Jeter on the apron, ramming his head into the post. Matthews back outside and throws Jeter in the ring for a two count. Matthews hits a backbreaker for a two count. Matthews with a suplex for two. Matthews ties up Jeter in a surfboard, but Jeter powers out. Matthews sends Jeter to the corner and the two start trading punches. Jeter hits two clotheslines and gets a two count. Jeter picks Matthews up and gets a knee to the gut as a thank you. Jeter reverses an Irish whip and hits a leg whip clothesline for two. Jeter hovers over Matthews and gets stunned with a jawbreaker. Matthews hits a German suplex for two. Matthews sets Jeter on the top rope in the superplex position, but Jeter punches him off. Jeter perches himself on the top rope, but Matthews falls into the ropes to knock Jeter down. Matthews goes back to the corner and Jeter somehow knocks Matthews back off the turnbuckle. The spot looked like Matthews should have won. Anyway, Jeter hits a top rope leg whip clothesline for the win. A good match despite the weird spot at the end. **.

-We get a video review of Seth Skyfire and Mac Johnson beating The Troubleshooters (Chris Masters and Brent Albright) for the OVW Southern Tag Team Titles.

-Backstage promo with Skyfire and Johnson.

-Break

-Jim Cornette interviews The Troubleshooters. They introduce Beth Phoenix as their new manager.

-A review of the Matt Morgan/Rodney Mack/Big Bad John situation. In a nutshell, Mack called out Morgan and attacked him. Mack is about to hit Morgan with the OVW Title belt, but Morgan throws powder in his eyes. Big Bad John comes out to run off Morgan and get tackled by a blinded Mack. Officials break up the incident and we have a TV main event.

-Rodney Mack vs. Big Bad John

-There is only three minutes left in the show, which doesn’t give the guys a lot of time to do anything. The end result is some back and forth brawling and a run-in by Matt Morgan, which turns into a big melee. The show ends with Morgan jawing at Mack and Big Bad John as he walks back to the dressing room. Dud.

The End Result: This was the first time I have seen OVW in about a month, so I was a little out of the loop. However two out of the three matches were watchable, so it wasn’t all bad.

That was a good recap, although wasen't Seth Skyfire treated on jobber levels? I don't remember him winning any matches.

Judging from Cornette and Hill's reactions in the recap package, it was treated as a big upset. It was played off as two young guys win the big one over Johnny Ace's chosen team. Skyfire and Johnson even went into the crowd to celebrate. I would say in was the equivalent of Kidman and London winning the Smackdown tag titles.
