Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Is anyone else a fan of the first Stargate movie or the SG-1 series? Anyone else looking forward to STARGATE: ATLANTIS this Friday?
starvenger 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Haven't watched SG-1, but Atlantis intruiges me. I'll tape the first ep and see how that goes. "The 4400" has also caught my interest. Kinda X-Files meets X-Men, in a way.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 I keep forgetting that 4400 is on. I want to check it out as well. I was checking out the Atlantis section of scifi.com and I keep getting the feeling that its going to be pretty good stuff. I reccomend SG-1. It's got a good balance of humor, action, and character driven elements. I really liked the pilot episode. I bought a DVD with the Pilot, and the first 2 regular episodes yesterday and I was really impressed with how they acknowledged the first film but moved forward into the SG-1 concept at the same time. It was kind of a sequel to the first film in some ways. Really expanded on what Ra was and what he was doing in the first film. HOWEVER, I was caught completely off guard by the nudity. I was expectng TV-level rating and the first time a girl was stripped it was done TV-style with nothing being shown. Then the second time its like being hit in the face with a really hot ax. Totally caught me off guard, heh. I guess the DVD's are unedited. Either that or Sci-Fi somehow found a way to air it.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 To be honest I think the only reason I haven't checked SG-1 out is because I'm watching something else at the time and haven't bothered to tape it. I need to see if the DVDs are available for rental, I guess...
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Its worth checking out. Especially that pilot. The regular 1st episode demonstrates the character-driven nature of the series as well, telling an excellent and sad story without the team ever going through the gate. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Love Stargate:SG1 and plan to watch Atlantis. Looks good enough from the previews. I'm not wild about less Jack O'Neill on Stargate. I know he'll still be around but less Jack means less balance of humor.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Is MacGuyver taking less of a role in SG-1? Or are you talking about Atlantis?
starvenger 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Is MacGuyver taking less of a role in SG-1? Or are you talking about Atlantis? I think he means the former, not the latter
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Is MacGuyver taking less of a role in SG-1? Or are you talking about Atlantis? Yes, he's taking less of a role to be with his daughter. Which is nice and all, but it kinda sucks knowing less O'Neill. Still, I can understand his reasons so I'm fine with it. Just sucks.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 (edited) Yeah that does kind of suck but I'd probably do the same thing in his place. Hopefully if they do get to make the movie that's apparently been rumored and pushed back in favor of fnishing out the series, Anderson will reprise the role hardcore. I'm seriously contemplating ordering Season 1 on DVD and collecting the entire series. I've been investigating episode rundowns and it looks like the writers and producers have created quite an elaborate ongoing saga here. I really want to see it unfold naturally. 2GOLD 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Stargate is one of those shows that if you don't see it from the start, you'll think it's incredibly stupid. Watch it from the beginning and you realize how deep the plot lines run. This season sounds awesome already although I'm not big on a Carter clone running around. Atlantis looks like it could hit big but it could also miss big. Hope it hits and that the SG1 movies get made. I'll be first in line.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 Sounds like Babylon 5 in a way. Another show I need to watch...
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 15, 2004 I'm pretty sure now that I'm going to collect the series in its entirety. Which it speaks volumes about it that I'm collecting SG-1 before I'm collecting any of the Trek sets. But Trek is so amazingly expensive. I think SG-1 is nearly have the cost with the same quality. It seems that for the last 3 or 4 years, they keep saying the show has run its course, and they are going to end it and start making movies again. then they find ways to keep the show on. As a matter of fact, "The Lost City" two parter that ended season 7 was supposed to be the movie, and Atlantis was going to be on Earth. It wasn't untill they decided on making a spinn-off that Atlantis was moved to another galaxy. I've been a Stargate SG-1 nut for a while now, ever sionce I got the Sci-fi channel on my cable. I got all of the season boxed sets (escept for season 2, which I bought all of the DVD's seperatley and saved $10, ans Season 3, which I still need to get) and regularly watch them when nothing is on. I highly recomend the show to everybody, especially Buffy fans- some of the writing and story lines remind me of Buffy at times.

Well, I've already gotten the DS9 and TNG sets (thank you, Paramount, for sucking ~$2K out of my bank account. Bastards), so I'm pretty much ok there. Priority for me goes to Sliders seasons 1&2 though...
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 16, 2004 Those sets are so friggin' expensive. I can't figure out why they cost that much either. SG-1 is an hour long series with roughly the same number of episodes and a similar budget for FX (I'd think), and its sets are only . . . $48 at Wal-Mart I saw this morning. Ridiculous. I have some theories: 1) It's Trek. 2) They probably have to pay the actors for the sit-down interviews on the discs 3) It's Brannon Braga's fault (when all else fails, blame Braga)
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 16, 2004 Let's not forget Berman. I hate seeing the decline of Trek. TNG had alot of warmth that at least held out through NEMESIS. And even DS9 rocked the world once the Dominion showed up. But Voyager and Enterprise are like watching a somewhat adventurous hospital. Everything is so . . . clean and white and devoid of emotion. It is hard to explain. Oh well.

It is hard to explain. Oh well. DS9 was the red-headed stepchild where basically Ira Steven Behr was allowed to play around and do what felt right. Mirror Universe? Sure. Long story arcs? Why not? Rat-Pack era lounge singer? Hell yeah! (Note - Although I love the Vic Fontaine character, I have to question the sanity of Behr, Moore and the others for deciding that they needed a holographic recreation of a Vegas singer as a recurring character). Anyways, back to Stargate. I'm kinda thinking that Stargate doesn't have that kind of baggage that Trek has to worry about. Stargate: Atlantis might (seeing as it's a spinoff) but it seems pretty self-contained (as I understand it) so I think it'll be OK.

I've been watching since the Showtime days and you are right, they have been saying it was over for the last two seasons. But this year feels like this is it. Anderson wants to spend time with his daughter and Shanks has tried to move on repeatedly but he keeps coming back.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 16, 2004 Shanks was such a good choice for Daniel Jackson. He nailed Spader's performance so well and looks so much like him that it took me a bit to figure out they were two different people.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 17, 2004 Atlantis was fairly amazing, considering it was a Pilot episode. Not earth shattering, but its established that it isn't going to be a carbon copy of SG-1 with a new base. I like some of the new elements introduced, and that there are Stargates in orbit above planets is going to make for some interesting scenarios. I dug it. Now hopefully it can maintain this quality and develop its characters really well to really be on the level with SG-1.
Anakin Flair 0 Report post Posted July 17, 2004 I have a feeling that Atlantis wont REALLY start to shine untill it's second or third season, but it will still be a good show, nontheless.
Guest SP-1 Report post Posted July 17, 2004 I have a feeling that Atlantis wont REALLY start to shine untill it's second or third season, but it will still be a good show, nontheless. That's entirely possible. TNG did that as well. Atlantis will probably really pick up once some intricacy can be laid into the storylines. Once things get a little more interwoven and complex. I just hope they don't rely so much on the, "team trying to get home" approach to things. I don't want it to become Voyager with Stargates.
