Guest Redhawk Report post Posted August 6, 2004 Career .296 average. If he retired after this year he'd have about 2,200 hits. (I think) he won a batting title. Won two World Series (and IIRC, was Series MVP once). So is he in?

CanadianChris 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2004 Won two World Series (and IIRC, was Series MVP once). Pat Borders and Paul Molitor were Series MVPs in the years when Olerud was on a WS winner. I've been a fan of Olerud's for many, many years. But he's not a Hall of Famer.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2004 I can't see it. Olerud doesn't have the counting stats needed, and he wasn't a dominant player at any point during his career. He was the best in baseball in 1993, but one season doesn't get you the Hall. There have been a glut of first basemen over the last fifteen years. Jeff Bagwell, Mark McGwire, and Frank Thomas are all more deserving candidates. Then you have Rafael Palmeiro, Fred McGriff, Jim Thome, and Jason Giambi. I can't see the 7th or 8th best first baseman of his era garnering induction.
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted August 6, 2004 If there's a special wing in the hall for classiest players in the game, Olerud is a first-ballot lock. In terms of his career stats, however, he falls well short of consideration. The staggering thing to think about is how easy it would have been for Olerud to hit .400 if he had any ounce of speed: he hit .363 in '93 and .354 in '98 and he had almost no help from infield hits in either year. If someone like, say, Luis Castillo could swing the bat like Olerud, he'd probably have a couple of .400 seasons under his belt.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted August 7, 2004 I'm trying to think of ex- and current Mariners who have a shot at the Hall. Right now all we've got is Gaylord Perry and Paul Moliter (he's the M's batting coach). Randy Johnson, Griffey and A-Rod are going. Aside from Olderud, Edgar Martinez is the only other person I can think of with a decent shot.
