Hogan/Sting Nitro 99

Recommended Posts

Guest TheZsaszHorsemen

Anyone remember this match? Hogan was Champ and in the red and yellow, and Sting was challenging. They both went out and busted ass and had a great match, that was marred by interference by Sid and Rick Steiner. It was legit *** match before the ending.

I'd rather re-see the Hogan/Sting match from 1994/5.

When Hogan was in black and white but not nWo, and Sting was wearing Red and Yellow.

Believe me, this match is worth it. Hogan works his ass off, and Sting puts in a good effort as well.

I didn't see the match, but I vaguely remember the angle. I remember Luger ended up getting involved because he "didn't trust" Hogan, and Sting ended up turning heel and winning the strap at Fall Brawl.

I loved when the Stinger would crack a bat over Hogan's noggin and the announcing crew would talk about how dispicable that was all while the audience was going apeshit for Sting. I actually kind of liked that angle, could have been done a LOT better but what are you gonna do?

This was during an actual decent time for WCW. The main eventers (Hart, Hulk, Sting, Luger, Goldberg) were always actually, ya know, in main events....Benoit had the U.S. title, Sid was ending jobber matches and cutting ridiculous promos, we had guys like Guerrero/Kidman/Rey feuding with Malenko/Saturn/Benoit...

An actual NUMBER ONE CONTENDERS MATCH (for the World Title) between Malenko/Benoit. A great Benoit/Sting bout. A good Hart/Sting main event title bout.

Lenny Lane was actually bringing the Cruiser division out of the dirt that Rey killed all summer by not defending the title. Lane had competitive matches with the likes of Kaz, Juvy and Psychosis.

Then....enter RUSSO!!!!!!!!!! He'll save EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fired 3 months later.

That was really the last time WCW was coherent to watch. As far as the sting turning heel and being cheered for it. Sting is a guy who needs to be a babyface as he's pretty much always to over to be heel. As far as how they turned him...you can't tell fans that Sting hitting Hogan with the bat years prior was a good thing, then expect them to be upset when he does it a few years later.

I agree with Usethesledgehammer about the Hart/Sting and Sting/Benoit matches, midcard, and cruiserweight division. It's like the old saying goes...if it ain't broken then don't fix it. Russo came in and broke it.

I VAGUELY remember a segment on Nitro with Hogan signing autographs & Sting waiting behind him, saying "C'mon Hulkster man!" or something behind his back, then when Hogan turned Sting beat him down. This during the same timespan? Or am i just going senile in my young age?

What in the fuck?

WCW had bright moments back then, but for the most part, it was completly incoherent and shitty.

You had guys like Van Hammer, Buff Bagwell, and Scotty Riggs wrestling eight minute squashes. The First Family getting pushed. The hummer. Ric Flair being committed and his shit with Roddy Piper, Judge Mills Lane, etc. for the Presidency of WCW. WCW TV Champion Rick Steiner. Useless matches intentionally being booked just so Sid could squash people. Kiss Demon and Vampiro beginning their epic feud. Harlem Heat getting back together and absolutely sucking wind. Savage vs. Nash. Nash vs. Sid.

If you made a comp tape of the Summer of 99 WCW, you'd certainly have some great matches and segments. Lenny/Lodi were awesome, guys like Sting, Hogan, and DDP had good matches, The Triad were briefly in the main event, etc. But if I sat you down in front of a TV and showed you, say, July 1999 of WCW, you'd slit your wrists after watching 23 hours of TV with 4 of it being watchable.

FIRST OFF:

The Demon and Vampiro didn't feud in fall 1999. That was in MID-2000. Do research before making an argument.

Nash and Sid didn't feud in fall 1999. They were TEAMMATES. Do research on the topic at hand.

Nash and Savage didn't feud in fall 1999, which is the time period being discussed. Do research on the topic at hand.

If you wanna call Knobbs and Morrus being pushed, then so be it. They were simply jobbed out as the only "heel" team in the division, after beating Douglas & Malenko. Douglas didn't deserve SHIT, as he was fat and just AWFUL. Malenko didn't deserve to job at Fall Brawl, but he was rewarded with a #1 Contender's Match to the WORLD TITLE on Nitro right after. Your point? They had no heel teams. First Family, although not great, were better than some of WWF's efforts AT THE SAME TIME (Droz + Albert...Mideon and Viscera...). Not like they got a real push and won the belts.

If you made a comp tape of other "great periods" in wrestling, let's see...

WWF 2000 early...Oh yes...Great segments with Rock, Foley, HHH, Benoit, Jericho, Angle, Hardyz, E + C etc....but you'd still get Mark Henry, Viscera, etc. who were all featured on television, ala the "Van Hammers and Bagwells" you mention. Bagwell wasn't even "awful" during that time period. Just not super-entertaining. he was trying, as he was promised a main event push. It floundered.

NWA 1989...Flair, Steamboat, Sting, Lex, Muta, Rick + Scott, Pillman, Midnights....but look at some of the other midcard/lower tier talent that were featured on "BIG TIME" shows and even PPVs...

I was mentioning the top-tier angles...not the TV Title matches between Steiner/Hammer and Boxing matches between Bagwell and Piper. NOTHING is perfect...and for WCW, even "decency" was miraculous.

BTW, for the "Sting/Hogan autograph signing incident"...

This opened up the September 27th, 1999 edition of NITRO.

- Hulk came out of a limo to sign autographs to some young Hulkamanaiacs.

- Sting, speaking like a child, asked for an autograph.

- Sting attacked Hogan, kicking him repeatedly in the knee.

Funny stuff.

But WCW had 7-12 minute squash matches (Beniot/Malenko vs Enos/Riggs went 17 mins or something in early 99, out of the time frame, but just an example)

At least the WWF had Viscera in 2:30 min matches, like all the other undercard bouts...

And WWF was utilizing all their major TV shows (RAW and SD!) WCW had WCWSN as a total jobber show, and Thunder was Mid carders are us (Goldburg vs Johnny Grunge, one notable main event)

Why mention it, then? We're talkin' fall '99, with the topic being "they were actually getting on track."

BTW, about the "Benoit/Malenko wrestled Riggs/Enos in a 7-12 minute SQUASH comment"...

1) This was one of the LAST bouts in a WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE TOURNAMENT...

The match went like this:

Riggs worked on Malenko. Enos was taken down by tandem double-teaming from the Horsemen. Benoit got worked over for 2 minutes by the quick-tagging Enos/Riggs duo. Malenko got tagged in, but Enos quickly got the advantage with a knee. Riggs got several repeated two-counts on Dean, until Benoit got tagged in. They whipped Enos/Riggs into each other, and Benoit put the Crossface on Enos for the tapout.

It lasted roughly 6 minutes, and wasn't a squash. Say what you want about the caliber of opponents, but for those that say "Hurricane Vs. AJ Styles from Metal was cool!", then why isn't THAT match a "squash", given that Hurricane' opponent technically wasn't known as thus, wasn't given a chance? Jeez, you got to see the Horsemen kick a teams ASS and advance in a tournament...how DARE, WCW! Riggs wasn't a SUB, anyway.

Back to the topic, WCW also put together a pretty good (and over) stable in "The Dead Pool" at this time, comprised of Vampiro (who actually gave a damn), Raven, and The ICP. Raven still got pops, Vamp could still work, and ICP, although un-deserving of wrestling matches, actually tried and cared and weren't awful.

They got pretty good ovations and had a cool entrance. Jobbing them on TWO STRAIGHT PPVS in the SAME MATCH didn't help...nor did releasing Raven instantly. The six-mans against the Filthy Animals were very solid good openers to the Aug/Sept PPVs, despite your personal opinions on Vamp and ICP.

WCW fucked themselves over. They made a Heel Sting LIKEABLE...killed the Deadpool push instantly...took Lenny and Lodi off TV after a big push...killed Sid's streak too quickly (the streak SUCKED, yes...but they were in the middle of it and just axed it to Goldberg)...not to mention the stupid rushed heel turn of the Revolution in order to get a heel/face Revo/Animals feud.

Sigh.

Frank, the match in question may have been on Thunder (which they had pretty much little concern for, and NEEDED long matches for) against Bryan Adams and Horace, who they faced in that SAME WEEK after beating Riggs/Enos.

Well, Lenny/Lodi being off TV was because of the lawsuit filed by the GLAAD alliance. Whether or not it had any basis wasn't important, it was just flat dropped.

First off, since you never said Fall of '99, I presumed you were talking about the end of the summer through the time Russo came in (end of October). Lenny won the title at the end of the summer, and only would begin the feud with Kaz when the Fall began.

Do some research before countering an argument. On a Thunder at the end of August, they confronted each other before it was quickly forgotten. That's why I said "beginning."

Nash & Sting vs. Sid & Savage or something to that extent was the main event of GAB '99. That's why I thought they had feuded. I'll admit my mistake there. However, one can argue that Career vs. Career between Nash/Hogan was equally worst.

First Family frequently received 10 minute television matches. Even if they didn't win every match, that's still getting pushed to some degree.

And when you made a comp tape of WWE 2000 or NWA 1989, you had ***** matches, brilliant booking, great backstage segments, etc. As you said, "decency" is all you'd get out of that time period.

I honestly preferred Russo over this period of time, minus his penchant for hating foreigners, Cruiserweights, etc.

An actual NUMBER ONE CONTENDERS MATCH (for the World Title) between Malenko/Benoit.

Really? That's neat. As a mark during NWO's heyday, I loved Malenko and hoped every Nitro that'd Malenko'd come out, challenge Hogan, and use his "actual wrestling moves" to end Hogan's title reign.

After the Four Horsemen reformed, check this out:

From the January 25, 1999 Nitro:

7.  Ric Flair, Chris Benoit, & Steve McMichael defeated WCW World Champion Hulk Hogan, Kevin Nash, & Scott Steiner via disqualification when Nash hit Flair with a 2 x 4 board, given to him by the interfering Eric Bischoff, who had earlier been forced by Flair to sell "foam fingers" in the crowd.  Afterwards, the nWo held the Horsemen still as Bischoff prepared to shave Flair's head.  The WCW locker room poured out and ran off the nWo before the hair cutting, however.

Benoit actually worked with Hogan for a large portion of that match. No Malenko, tho...sorry.
