Guest SoCalTF Report post Posted August 15, 2004 Here's my review from another great show from PWG: Opening Segment: Frankie Kazarian comes out to Adam Pearce's music. As he began Joey Ryan Fan kept interupting him chanting "Colt Colt Colt" each time Kazarian tried to speak. I honestly thought he'd get a better reaction since he got rid of Pearce, oh well. I enjoy Kazarian way better as a heel then a face because he just gives off that cocky attitude guys like Shawn Michaels(whenever he was a heel) that fans love to hate. Frankie lists his accomplishments in wrestling. Colt comes out and lists his as being a WCW, WWF, and ECW champ along with a Hungry Hungry Hippos champion along with a Mashmellow eating title. Funny stuff setting up the match later between the two. Supa Bad and The Human Tornado came out to the NIJA RAP! Great moment right there. Charles and Topgun coming out as the Bollywood Bombshells was pretty funny as well. The spot where Supa Bad and Tornado play basketball near the entrance way and Tornado bouncing the ball off Charles Mercury's head, going for the slam dunk, and doing a hurincurana type move was also pure gold. It's a shame that Tornado and Supa Bad got eliminated first. Excalibur and Disco Machine come out next and the fall was pretty good aswell. Topgun doing a flip off the top and Charles doing a 450(I'm not sure if it was a full 450 because I was on the other side of where it happend) looked pretty nuts. Excal and Disco got the win. Then Los Rojos Locos came out and the fall seemed pretty decent. Excalibur and Disco Machine tried to rip off the mask of one of the Locos but to no luck. When Disco and Excalibur lost Excalibur seemed real upset with his partner as he left Disco in the ring. Up next Joey Ryan comes out and says Chris Bosh wont be showing up to the event so he laid out an open challenge to anyone in the back to wrestle him. Quicksilver answers the challenge. Joey had some tape around his left shoulder I believe and both guys worked on eachother's shoulders during the match. This was a really good match. I really think Quicksilver has been getting better through out the year with his strong preformences at Rev Pro's SOTR and the PWG shows he has been on. Joey has also been getting better and pulled off a pretty nice looking 2nd Rope Moonsault to the outside on Quick. Great action in this one. After the match Paul T came out and said at the next show Joey and Scott will have a ladder match with the winner picking who they want their co-tag champ to be. This match should be really good and hopefully not the last in the Lost/Ryan fued. Puma and Josh Prohibition's match followed and was really good. People say Josh hasn't been that good as he use to be since returning from his ankle injury and him going to XPW but this match was really good. His preformence had to be his best in my opinion since his tag match with M-Dogg against Homicide and B-Boy at IWA MS' tag tournament. Puma also had a good showing in this. The only bad thing I have to say about him is his using of Christmas songs as entrance music especialy when it's August. Slymm and Bradley vs. Khan and Brandon Thomaselli was a decent tag match. I enjoyed the segments where Brandom Thomaselli tried to over power the much bigger and stronger Brad Bradley. Brandon is a real entertaining worker and I enjoy his Standing Shooting Star Press which I think is better then The Amazing Red's or Sonjay Dutt's version of the overused yet still fun and impressive move. I really don't see what people like about Apollo Khan because each time I've seen him he always looks uninterested and unmotivated and lacks so much charisma. He's got some nice moves but really doesn't impress me overall. The PWG title match between Colt and Frankie is my runner up for MOTN. The two men really put up a great contest. Colt wearing the gogles was extremely entertaining. The spots where Frankie tries to out smart Colt but ends up with Colt out smarting Frankie where really fantastic. Seeing each man trying to go for one another's finisher was a breath of fresh air seeing as in almost every match I see one worker hit the other worker's own finisher on him is pretty worn out by now to me. Seeing Frankie win disapointed me but it was obvious he would win after defeating Adam Pearce in a steal cage for the title less then a month ago. After the match seeing Vanderpyle(or Double Vandertrader as Stan said last night) turn on Colt was kinda obvious seeing as Colt was a buddy of Pearce but having Slymm and Bradley attack Colt was surprising(to me atleast). This new stable of Brad Bradley, Babi Slymm, and Frankie "The Present" Kazarian has me wondering if this is moving toward the return of Adam Pearce to help a friend in need so to say. After intermission Donovan Morgan came out to take on CM Punk. Ricky Reyes was supposed to take on Punk but I think Reyes is in Japan right now. Morgan cuts a promo about Punk wearing Stevie Richards' tights and about how Stevie was a jobber blah blah blah. Then he did he his Rick Rude thing where he brought in a lady from the auidience. He brought her in and laid one on her and she pretty much tried to get him to stop but he didn't. The best part of the entire match was the young felmale throwing her shoe at Morgan. This match was pretty bad. I'm not a fan of Punk, but he came off a great match with Super Dragon and went to this. I'm not going to comment on the match based on the fact I felt it was pretty much the worst match in PWG's history(including The Oven Mit Kids vs. Hardkore Kidd). Please PWG, never book Morgan again. Main Event time came and I couldn't be any happier then to see the match I have been looking forward to ever since it was annoucned. Super Dragon vs. Samoa Joe lived up to the hype. This match alone proves that Dragon can pretty much hold his own against workers bigger than he is. Both meh pretty laid a beating on eachother. Joe just smacked the shit out of Dragon which I'm sure Dragon haters would enjoy and hopefully prove them wrong about Dragon only beating on "130 pound backyarders". I loved how they teased the Psycho Driver in the middle of the match. Dragon going for the Corkscrew to the outside was pretty cool and from my view it looked like he barley hit Joe. The count out pretty much made Joe look like a monster in this match and has in the last coulpe shows which is what I think PWG is building too. He's pretty much been unstopable. Hopefully this match continues the Dragons/Joe fued further on and hopefully we get to see SD, AD, and another guy(namely Christopher Daniels) against Joe and The Pitbulls. Overall another great PWG show. I'm really bad at guessing but I'd say there where about 175-200 people there seeing as last month had 300 people and it was almost as full this time. The only low point was the Morgan match in which he really looked bad in. I really hope PWG doesn't bring him back. He looks out of shape and didn't seem to care about the match. And for those wondering about merch, SD Evolution 3, Taste The Radness, 88 Miles Per Hour, Kee_ The _ee Out Of Our _ool, and The Musical where on sale along with PWG shirts in the classic green and some in red. Again, it's getting old saying this, but great job to PWG and all the people that helped with the show.
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2004 Great review! Any comments on what made the Punk/Morgan match so bad? Were they blowing spots or was it just slow and boring or what?
Guest SoCalTF Report post Posted August 15, 2004 Morgon just seemed off and was really slow and nothing exciting happend.. Normaly I'm not a fan of Punk, but he did pretty good but Morgon just brought it down so bad. He even looks like he's gained a lot of weight.
PsychoDriver 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2004 Indeed, the Punk-Morgan match was just dull and nothing much of note happened. Kinda odd that one of the worst matches in PWG history would be followed by one the best (SD Vs. Joe) I'll post more thoughts on this later....
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2004 Were people pissed about the countout finish? Seems like a lot of PWG main events lately have ended in DQ or countout.
Guest SoCalTF Report post Posted August 16, 2004 People didn't mind. The feeling that the match gave off is that someone finally stopped Super Dragon and that this might lead up to something big. The fans where lead out of the building because Dragon wasn't moving and they had to clear up one of the merch tables to help carry him to the back.
PsychoDriver 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2004 Some thoughts: - Heel Frankie is so much cooler than Face Frankie (and that's saying something) - Colt Cabana is one funny SOB. - The gauntlet opener was great fun. Tornado's Slam Dunk Rana was one of the greatest comedy spots I've ever seen. Not sure if many people caught this but Excalibur also Tombstoned Top Gun on to a set up chair on the outside... Sick. - Is it just me or do Los Rojos Locos seem alot better than the Ballards were? - I was upset that Bosh wasn't there. I was looking forward to that match and thought it may have led to Scott Lost choosing Bosh as his new partner to form like a "darkside" X-Foundation. Oh Well it could still happen... - Ryan Vs. Quicksilver: Turned out real good. Alot working on the arm in this one. Cool spot where Ryan moonsaulted to the floor from the buckle. Never seen him do that before. Just too bad the crowd didn't seem to be paying attention to this one. - Slymm/Bradley Vs. Brandom/Apollo: seemed like the ultimate "random tag match" at the beginning but turned into a fun albeit squash type match. Slymm/Bradley worked pretty well as a team, and I was very impressed with Brandon. I'd like to see him get some singles matches in PWG. Honestly I don't remember anything Apollo did... - PUMA Vs. Josh: This was very good, they really seemed to click in there. Best I've seen Josh look in some time. He impressed me and I apologize for the "He's like the wind" comment I made in my preview of the show. Puma wins after a neat Cloverleaf type move. -Colt Vs. Frankie Kazarian: This was entertaining as hell. My 2nd favorite of the night. Colt and Frankie just have great chemistry. I'd love for TNA or ROH to book this match so they can see how great Frankie can be in there. Frankie wins after Vanderplye "mistakenly" trips Colt. Leading him into the wave of the future. - I'm liking the new Frankie/Slymm/Bradley/Vanderplye faction. Finally we can "Boo" Vanderplye again! Slymm/Bradley should work well as heels too. Oh and this bit was just screaming for a future Adam Pearce return... and I hope that happens sooner rather than later. - CM Punk Vs. Donovan Morgan: Ok what can I say could this one? I liked the Stevie Richards references (because I'm a big fan of Stevie) but not much else. This was slow, kinda boring and very disjointed. And people conplained about Punk Vs. Corino from June... at least that was "ha ha" funny. What the hell happened to Morgan? First I see him peeing on a wall outside the building than he pretty much pisses over what could have been a solid match. And what the heck happened with Ricky Reyes? - SD Vs. Samoa Joe: This one really delieved. It was very well worked, it was disturbingly stiff at times and well it was just a hell of a fun match. One of the best in PWG history. I think just maybe this one will convert of few of Super Dragon's unbelievers (Aka alot of the moron ROH lemmings) as it really showed a new side of Super Dragon. If there is one reason to buy the DVD it's this match... - It also provided perhaps the best visual in PWG history as Samoa Joe dived on to SD sending him flying backward right into the hard camera. Sending it crashing to the floor. Geeze... I hope that looks good on tape. - That thud that SD made when he landed the dragon twister on the floor was fairly sick as well. - At first I was dissapointed in the count finish as the match was going so well, I wanted to see a positive finish (and SD never even Curb stomped him!) But thinking about it.... it was a perfect ending. As it will no doubt lead to a great feud that will probably draw alot of money, helping PWG further rocket into the wrestling stratosphere. - Overall this was a very fun transitional show for PWG that planted the seeds for what should be an outstanding rest of the year for PWG. If awesomeness was an olympic event... PWG would get the gold. -Also just got done watching the "Pearce in Vegas" bit on "the musical" DVD. Crap that thing is really hilarious. And just further proves that Pearce really needs to return to PWG... it just isn't the same without him. Heck put him under a mask as Los Pearceo Loco... just bring him back. Ok well according to Joey Ryan's site PWG returns Sept. 4th with Joey Ryan Vs. Scott Lost Ladder match already booked. Don't miss that one....
Guest SoCalTF Report post Posted August 16, 2004 The reason why Reyes wasn't there was because he's in Japan.
PsychoDriver 0 Report post Posted August 16, 2004 The reason why Reyes wasn't there was because he's in Japan. Oh, Yet another reason why the show should have taken place on the first booked 8/7 instead of 8/14. Thanks ROH
