The 64 was crap...the only reason to even own it was if you had a few certain games...4 controllers...and 3 friends...

With the exception of some of the multiplayer games the system was awful.

viva la master system...

<<How can I be the only one who voted for 64?  Have you guys ever played No Mercy or DK 64 or Revenge or Conkers or Mario 64 or any of the Mario Parties or Super Smash Bros.?  Come on now... 64 was revolutionary and you know it!>>

N64 wasn't crap, and it did indeed have a pretty solid library, but a lot of the games that sold so well were pretty average.  Many of the games listed by TheNewF'nShow are perfect examples!  Mario Party, for instance, was a combination of a bunch of incredibly simple, TI-83 level mini-games, combined into a game that is only fun if you have three friends over and are a little drunk.  It then had two sequels, which were exactly the same.  Joy.  Super Smash Brothers is up there among the most overrated games of all time.  It features a really simplistic fighting engine and, again, is only fun with three friends, and even then it can't compete with TK3 team battle (each person gets four characters, woo).  If it didn't have Nintendo characters, everyone would consider it to be complete crap.

Actually, almost all the four player games are style over substance, using their Nintendo mascots to sell despite *really* simplistic (or bad) gameplay.  Mario Kart 64 and Mario Tennis are more examples.  It's weird, everyone acts like the four player games are what makes N64 great, but I always thought that almost all the four player games were mediocre.  Even Goldeneye can't compare to Quake 2 over a LAN.  Otoh, some of the one player games are true classics, so I like N64 for the opposite reason everyone else does.  Shrug.
