I love the Wes arc of Season Three. The opening is awesome, one of those great dream sequences that seems so real. I love Angel trying to be dad, and I love Wes trying to do everything possible to save Connor. And the way it ends when it seems the rug has been pulled out from under him.

Graduation Day, Part 2 (3.22)

I've always loved Waiting in the Wings, from teh art-like quality to the development of the two love triangles, to Fred's convo with Wes about Angel/Cordy/Groo. But it came up against Graduation Day Part 2, so this was going to tug on me. I have criticisms about GD2, such as the Mayor as a big snake, the sex_as_drinking_blood scene was a little over the top for me. There's a good tension that this episode builds up, which WAITW doesn't really. And I love Angel leaving at the end, because in the midst of this big celebration that Buffy seems a part of, she's left alone again. Plus, Giles busting out the diploma makes a pretty good markout moment. In the end, GD2 won out.

Illyria was so much goodness. And Angel punching out her is such a markout moment. The Wes/Illyria stuff is awesome, Wes is going all badass shooting Knox during Angel's speech and stabbing Gunn but avoiding the vitals. Too much.

Season 3 and 2 have gotten way too much representation, IMO. I understand why, that was the peak of Buffys "mainstream" period. It was the peak of my original fandom as I stopped watching around Season 4. So yeah, it's going to be looked at favourably. But it does not have nearly the same quality as Season 5. Season 5 is at a totally different level.

Overall, Season 5 was the best season. There cannot really be any debate here on that. The simple fact that it kept consistant themes throughout the season and it ALL came together for The Gift. On top of that, it had some killer "peak" episodes.

S5 has some really boring eps though. Like Shadow, Listening to Fear and Weight of the World. The entire Joyce arc is really boring, made good only by The Body.

 

I think I like S4 the most. It has the best stand alone eps. I really like the main arc and villain.

 

S4-6 is the best era. I don't like watching S1-3 nearly as much as them.

I am not talking about favourites, though. I am talking about "Best Overall SEASON". Season 5, clearly, was the most well developed in terms of each individual episode having meaning and theme. That's why "Family" is such a good episode, because it is the theme of the season (with the subthemes being Love and Blood, both connected to the overall theme).

 

Let me put it this way, if you had to choose which Season to do a paper on, which would it be? For me it's easily Season 5 because there is SO MUCH THERE to talk about. You can't find that depth in any other season.
