MLB Award Balloting

Recommended Posts

I can imagine the backlash if Bonds wins yet another MVP award. "OMG he only got it because he hit his 700th HR!!!11" The thing is, the Cardinals are still a playoff team if they're missing one of their stars. The Giants without Bonds are just above a AAA team.

That's just the way it is, I suppose. Bonds is an utterly unlikeable human being, and he seemingly goes out of his way to make himself even less likeable with each passing day. Combine that with Bonds getting ten minutes of Sportscenter on nights when he does nothing and people are just sick of him.

I don't think there will be much backlash. All but the most hardened writers have conceded the award to Bonds. Its awfully hard to make a rational argument against a .372 batting average and .610 On Base Percentage. Also, his .827 slugging percentage is second best all time.

*bumped*

I was just discussing with my brother about the lack of 1st Basemen in the AL who have played a good majority of their teams games at 1st. In reguards to the Gold Glove, the real choices are very slim.

I don't mean among the writers and the hardcore baseball fans; we know what Bonds does, and the historical significance and downright absurdity of some of his numbers. I'm referring more to the casual baseball fans, many of whom are tired of hearing about Bonds, tired of seeing him ALL THE TIME on ESPN, and probably think he's a steroid user. I don't think the NL MVP could rationally be given to anyone but Bonds, but there is a large group of baseball fans who will view that selection with disdain.

Updated through September 23. New leaders in bold.

AL MVP

1. Gary Sheffield, NYY

2. Alex Rodriguez, NYY

3. Johan Santana, Min

4. Manny Ramirez, Bos

5. Hideki Matsui, NYY

6. Miguel Tejada, Bal

7. Vladimir Guerrero, Ana

8. Ichiro Suzuki, Sea

9. Carlos Guillen, Det

10. Mark Teixeira, Tex

At this point, Johan Santana deserves to be included alongside Vlad, Sheffield, Ramirez, and David Ortiz as legitimate MVP candidates. Ortiz ranks 17th, by the way. This list was compiled the day before Santana's last start, so he'd rank even higher if this was calculated today.

AL Cy Young

1. Johan Santana, Min

2. Curt Schilling, Bos

3. Brad Radke, Min

AL Rookie of the Year

1. Bobby Crosby, Oak

2. Shingo Takatsu, CWS

3. Zach Greinke, KC

AL Gold Gloves

C Damian Miller, Oak

1B Mark Teixeira, Tex

2B Luis Rivas, Min

SS Christian Guzman, Min

3B Alex Rodriguez, NYY

OF Johnny Damon, Bos

OF Mark Kotsay, Oak

OF Torii Hunter, Min

NL MVP

1. Barry Bonds, SF

2. Scott Rolen, StL

3. Jim Edmonds, StL

4. Albert Pujols, StL

5. Adrian Beltre, LA

6. Bobby Abreu, Phi

7. J.D. Drew, Atl

8. Mark Loretta, SD

9. Lance Berkman, Hou

10. Sean Casey, Cin

Barry Bonds has earned 51 win shares this season. The record is Honus Wagner, who earned 59 in 1908. Bonds likely will not catch that, but he has a real chance at catching the second best season, Babe Ruth's 1923 (55 win shares).

NL Cy Young

1. Randy Johnson, Ari

2. Ben Sheets, Mil

3. Roger Clemens, Hou

Randy Johnson has a commanding lead. Carlos Zambrano is actually fourth on the list.

NL Rookie of the Year

1. Khalil Greene, SD

2. Jason Bay, Pit

3. Kazuo Matsui, NYM

NL Gold Glove

C Brian Schneider, Mon

1B Todd Helton, Col

2B Jeff Kent, Hou

SS Jack Wilson, Pit

3B Adrian Beltre, LA

OF Andruw Jones, Atl

OF Jim Edmonds, StL

OF Corey Patterson, ChC

Wow. I was certainly not expecting Jeff Kent to overtake the NL Gold Glove.

Guest complete confusion

I think even the Most common and casual Fan of baseball will have to realize that Bonds 2004 season still is unquestionably better then any other player in National League and Baseball in general.

Would it be a nice change if one of the cardinal trio won? Of course but the award is based on "MOST VALUEABLE"...You take one of those three guys off that cardinal lineup...they still have a loaded lineup.

Take Bonds off the team, they would be fighting with Colorado for 4th place.

2004 NL MVP without Question is Barry Bonds.

Second to fourth will be close.

The NL CY young is easily Randy Johnson. Almost no arguement.

The 2004 AL MVP likely will be Manny Rameriez.

Why? I believe in the theory of the Yankee threesome canceling each other out.

AL Cy Young? as great as Schilling has been, It has to go to Santana. I don't agree with some critics beliefs that Schilling is the Cy Young because "He had more pressure".

It's a noble theory, but I don't believe it works. In 2000, running nack and neck, Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent finished 1-2. I was sure Piazza would win the award because they were both Giants. The voting is a 14-9-8....pattern, and that prevents players from the same team affecting the vote to a large extent.

Besides, if the theory worked, the same thing would happen to Ramirez and Ortiz.

I will be shocked if the baseball writers actually give Randy Johnson the Cy Young. There's just no way they'll give the award to a pitcher with a .500 record and no starting pitcher in a non-strike year has ever won the award with fewer than 17 wins. I think Clemens will end up winning it.

Clemens might win it and if he does, He deserves it for another remarkable season but I believe even the writers will see that It's not Johnson's fault his team blows ass.

I could see the writers thinking "He could have folded up or phoned it in, but he continued to go and dominate regardless"

And Al; your right about the Bonds/Kent comparison...

I don't think you can call Schiling's season great. Great to me is a dominate year. Take out the first 6 weeks, and Santana's been just that. Schilling's having a good year, but he's not doing anything out of ordinary.

I do think Johnson will at least place in the award.  There's no real standout this year, especially now that Jason Schmidt has cooled off.

What do you think about Jake Peavy? I know he is going to win the ERA title, but what do you think his chances are of getting serious consideration for the Cy Young?

If Santana doesn't win the Cy Young then something is very wrong with the voters.

You can't let a guy with those K's, that ERA and that win-loss record just get a pat on the head because he wasn't pitching in Boston or some bull like that.

Slim to none. He missed a month earlier in the season, and that really hurt his chances.

I'll be shocked as well, but if Johnson had pitched for anyone but Arizona, he'd have 21 or 22 wins easily. He's the runaway leader in lowest run support. Maybe the writers will actually (*gasp!*) do some research.

Then again, these are the same people who gave Rafael Palmeiro a Gold Glove at a position he played fewer than 20 times.
