Iggy's Initial College Football Rankings

Recommended Posts

I've gotten so that I like to do my own top 25, so that I can evaluate teams independently of what the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls say. I waited until now to do the first rankings, because I think it's bullshit to rank teams that haven't even played yet.

I'm trying to weight this toward how teams have played this year, so teams that might have "fluke" wins or losses will get rewarded or punished for what they have done this year, rather than getting a free pass due to their reputations.

If you're interested, feel free to read/ discuss:

Yeah I don't see how Miami is ranked higher than OU. Miami squeaked out a victory against Florida State. OU's offense lit up both of there opponents so far. That makes no sense.

Hell I don't understand your rankings at all. They're all over the place.

There's very little rhyme or reason to these. Purdue annihilates a pair of cupcakes and you push them to number 4? I think they're playing like a top-20 team, but I also think you need to beat someone legit before you deserve to break that high. You also hopped on the Boise State bandwagon; while they're good, they're certainly not 6th-best in the nation good. There's a big difference between beating Oregon State one week and beating comparable teams 6 times a year, which is what most of your other top-10 teams do on a regular basis. What is Stanford doing on there?

I'm making a drinky-drink gesture, and rotating my forefinger near my temple as I point at this thread.

Wow, Bowling Green & Houston - OU is an unstoppable juggernaut! Miami's defense completely shut down a Top 25 team. Sure, Miami's offense was a bit off, but at least it was a win over a quality team, instead of a couple cup cakes.

The reason Oklahoma's not higher is that their defense looks extremely vulnerable right now. Bowling Green had little trouble moving the ball on them, and while they're still a top three team, they haven't been a legitimate opponent like Va. Tech or Florida State.

As for Boise State and Purdue, they were both top-20 teams last year that have looked utterly dominant this year. Ball State and Syracuse are both decent teams that got annihilated, (51-0 for Cuse, 45-0 at the half for Ball State.) Meanwhile, Boise destroyed the same Oregon St. team that would have beaten LSU with 9 out of 10 high school kickers.

Stanford beat BYU by 27, who beat ND, who beat Michigan. They also looked very strong against San Jose State. I know it might not hold up over the course of the year, but for now I think they deserve their ranking.

I thought it would be some of that goofy "X beat Y, who beat Z, so they could take Z, clearly" mojo. College football's getting closer and closer to being an "on any given Saturday" situation. Stanford will be lucky to win two more games this year.

There offense still showed it's dominant. There defense is still in the top end of the nation. They are better than the team that everyone was calling greatest every last year. At least on offense. Now they don't have to worry about stuff like the Sugar Bowl happening when there QB gets shut down. B/c they have two 100+ yard rushers.

I didn't say that I'd expect Stanford to beat Michigan if they played next Saturday. I just said that they have performed better than Michigan so far this year, and were more deserving of a high ranking right now. They might not be ranked #17 at the end of the year, but they certainly won't be 4-7. Stanford's greatly improved, and with the way the Pac-10 looks this year, the Cardinal will probably go 8-3 and end up in the Sun Bowl.

Your point? Bowling Green isn't bad.

And they'll probably lay a beatdown on Oregon. At least they unloaded on these teams and weren't ever in danger of losing the games. Unlike the rest of the Top 10.
