Is Ichiro Gonna Do it?

Recommended Posts

The goofy thing is that Ichiro might break a longer standing and frankly more impressive record. I mean, McGwire proved that you can hit 70 homers in a season but not really get many overall hits, or even bat .300. I assume Sisler is a no brain Hall of Famer, but really how many people even know the name nowdays?

It's a bit like the long standing argument over which was better between DiMaggio hitting 56 in a row or Williams batting .400. Personally, I think it's gotta be hitting .400. I'm not sure what DiMaggio batted that year, but I don't think it was .400 by any means.

Sisler's record isn't really that impressive. Sisler got alot of hits because he never drew many walks. Other players never approached his record because their high OBPs beat Sisler's empty batting average. For what its worth, McGwire reached base MORE often when he hit 70 home runs than Sisler did when he collected 257 hits.

Dimaggio hit .381 that season. Dimaggio's achievement is more impressive, because no one has yet to even approach it. Many players have hit .400, but none have come close to doing what Dimaggio did. Now, Williams' achievement was more VALUABLE, but Dimaggio's was more impressive.
