Giuseppe Zangara Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 Oh man, this is good. Closest point-of-reference is Bone Machine, but not really (similar production, but a completely different sound). Completely crazy album; good to know he still has a fully whacked out side.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 You're stealing. /using your radio station for personal gain. I wanna hear it, though.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted September 23, 2004 Author Report Posted September 23, 2004 Yeah, I borrowed the promo copy from the station. I had the opportunity to d/l it about a week ago, but I couldn't bring myself to do it. Rest assured I'll be getting this the day it comes out, though.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted September 23, 2004 Author Report Posted September 23, 2004 After two listens, I realize that the 11 minute "Sins of My Father" could've been five minutes shorter and that "Circus"—the requisite Waits spoken word track—is kinda dull and by-the-numbers. The rest of this album, however (including the first half of "Sins..."), is just so, so good and wonderful and neat.
PLAGIARISM! Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 With all the hoo-hah about the use of turntables and vocal percussion I was thinking 'If he's ever gonna make a bad album, EVER, this could be it...' Reassuring to know that still appears impossible. I've preordered it cos it was cheap, but I'm gonna be waiting like a week. Rough with the smooth...
Giuseppe Zangara Posted September 23, 2004 Author Report Posted September 23, 2004 Well, turntables were used on Mule Variations, so that's nothing new, but the mouth percussion ends up sounding like the kind of skeletal stuff used on Bone Machine.
The Man in Blak Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 Interesting that both Waits and Bjork have made a move towards vocal percussion with their recent albums.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted September 23, 2004 Author Report Posted September 23, 2004 Beatboxing ain't for rap anymore.
Edwin MacPhisto Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 I've been listening to the samples on the iTunes store, now that they're available. I'll be dropping by Best Buy to nab this one tomorrow after all. Just another layer of insane for Mr. Waits.
