College FB Programs that were once elite.

Recommended Posts

BYU hasn't been the same ever since they lost that game to Hawaii in 2001 and blew their shot at an BCS bowl.

UCLA is probably a combination of USC becoming a big-time power again, which is going to take top California recruits away from UCLA, and the fact that firing Bob Toledo and hiring someone who's never coached before probably wasn't a good idea.

So nobody knows of any good tape selling sites I can use to get my hands on some of these classic teams?

Buy a ton of VHS and wait for non-stop college football on ESPN Classics once late November hits. They'll play about every big time bowl game for a solid 5 or 6 weeks.

You can run into a lot of the old games there as well. If there's a good rivalry game coming up they'll usually play a lot of games between those two teams. Though you get an unhealthy amount of Florida games.

Texas A&M is the program that's taken the biggest dive over the past few years IMHO.

They were a power up until about 1997 or 1998, when they beat Kansas State in the Big 12 Title Game. After that, they've taken a long drop down to mediocrity, partially because they've been supplanted by Oklahoma as the dominant Big 12 program.

See Teke that's the funny thing. Oklahoma was dominant back in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's but they didn't dominate there conference b/c teams like Nebraska, A&M, and Texas were hanging around. These days those teams have taken a dive.....well except Texas. So I dunno.....that's kind of funny for some reason. When I'm born OU starts to suck when I'm old enough to comprehend football and then whenever I'm actually going to OU....they have nobody else in the conference! I should've grown up back in the day.......

And I tried the Search Engine thing. No luck. Figured one of you would know somewhere. And I don't have ESPN Classics.

They probably wanted one of those "badass" era Miami teams on the list. If they wanted one of those so badly, they should've went with the 1987 Hurricanes, who were a lot better.

Well the 91 Canes did have a little-used freshman backup DT named Dwayne Johnson :headbang:

...Texas wasn't in the same conference as OU until 1996

Thus while the RRS was important to OU's overall standing, it had no effect on the conference

I know that. But the Big 8 and SW conference usually battled one another if I'm not mistaken.

True, until 1996, the yearly game against Nebraska meant a lot more for OU's conference hopes.

Speaking of the Oklahoma/Nebraska rivalry, who does everyone think was the better coach, Tom Osborne or Barry Switzer? I'd personally go with Osborne. Along with the 1995 team, maybe the best ever, the 1997 team was impressive and had the 1983 team beaten Miami in the Orange Bowl, they'd be up there too.

Yeah I miss the fact that we get to play each other every year.

That's what makes this conference so hard. The teams in it may not be world beaters but they all seem to spend the whole season gunning for us. I swear OSU's season is judge a pass or failure depending on if they beat us or not.

Course I guess Ohio State and Michigan feel the same way about one another.

Rivalries....what makes College FB the best.

Switzer was an asshole anyways.....I know that has nothing to do with his coaching ability.....but the guy was a jerk. Anyone I know that knows him HATES him.

Penn State was the first that came to mind. It's really depressing.

The case of SMU is particularly sad, if for nothing else than I hate seeing a team called the MUSTANGS in such sorry shape.

Was winning the national title not as important in the old days? Or was it just more mythical? B/c I see some of these teams called "Elite" and "Powerhouse" and then they only have like 1 National Title. Or is it just winning seasons and bowl games you're using to determine this?

It was more of a Bowl Game deal back in the old days. Sure there was a #1 at the end of the season, but when you hear about teams' past glories you hear about Bowl victories more than anything.

And I think when all is said and done that Bob Stoops will be the greatest coach in OU history not Barry Switzer.

Stoops won his National Title fair and square.

What he said

Up until the mid-70's or so the national championship was awarded in the down time between the end of the regular season and the bowl games, so sometimes the national champion could lose in their last game of the season.

Nebraska's 97 title was complete and utter bullshit. They had no claim to that title at all as Michigan was a solid no.1 and the voters decided they wanted to give the Nebraska coach a gift. Michigan was totally screwed over by that.

Bud Wilkinson may have them both beat as best OU coach. 3 national titles and the longest undefeated streak ever.

Yeah and the whole 1997 deal was bullshit. Shame because 2 of Osborne's national titles are under always under a shitstorm of controversy (1994 and Penn State, 1997 and Michigan due to the Missouri play and Fulmer.)

Yeah, I think the sad thing is more people remember those two teams than the 95 team which was the best team I have ever seen play college football. The only team that I have seen that touches them is 2001 Miami.

Now which title did Switzer not win fair and square?

I don't really know which one of Switzer's 3 titles was not won fair and square. Maybe the 1985 title because they lost to Miami, but Miami blew their chance after getting killed by Tennessee in the Sugar Bowl that year.

Speaking of these old school coaches. How about Bear Bryant? Best NCAA coach ever?

Maybe. Bryant won 6 titles and pretty much was a winner wherever he went (Alabama, Kentucky, Maryland, Texas A&M). One could make a case for Ara Parseighan(resurrected Notre Dame in the 60s in a very down period for ND), Darrell Royal won 3 titles at Texas and revolutionized college football in the 1960s with the wishbone, Knute Rockne is considered a great coach, and so are Bobby Bowden, Joe Paterno, and Tom Osborne.

Found this kind of interesting in terms of bowl wins(some years there might have been bowl games but they weren't mentioned as such thus I didn't include them). Here's my source: http://www.cfbdatawarehouse.com/data/coach...php?coachid=275 You can then click on a letter to get the coaches by the last name.

Bobby Bowden: Won 18 bowl games including 9 straight from 1987-1995.

Joe Paterno: Won 20 bowl games including 5 straight from 1979-1983.

Tom Osborne: Won 12 bowl games including 4 straight from 1994-1997. Also lost 7 straight bowl games from 1987-1993.

Bear Bryant: Won 15 bowl games including 6 straight from 1975-1980. From 1967-1974, he went 0-7-1 in bowl games.

Joe Pa's teams came down to Earth in late 1998. I'm pretty sure that was the year they were expected to win it all and went undefeated for 7-8 games before dropping about 4 straight.

Since then, they've been .500 or worse.

EDIT-

My mistake, 1999. He had one winning season after that, 9-4 in 2002. He also had seasons of 5-7, 5-6, and 3-9.

I'll spell it out.Switzer was a cheater. Oklahoma was on probation one year while he was coach, and more importantly on probation after he left the school. It took over 10 year for Stoops to turn the program around.
