Aw yeah, another win for me. Quite sweet, considering who I beat.

Now, to continue mourning the Gamecocks loss...

Do I even ask how you came up with these rankings?

I don't even remotely get it.

Well since you came in late to the contest I guess I'll explain. All it is ranking each team for 1 to 32 in win/loss record, percentage of correct picks made, and percentage of correct picks made against (aka strength of schedule) and then taking the average of the three rankings. It's produced a lot of CONTROVERSY~ which was sort of the idea in making it a mock BCS poll, this being the Bored Championship Series. I thought of changing it to make it more "fair" but no one seemed to care that much. Because you took over a team with a forfeit your ranking is very low even with the 5-1 record although you have slowly creeped up. Still have a good shot at making it to one of the seven bowl games. I'm actually very satisfied this week with #1 thru #6 it's just after that where it gets weird.

After next week I'll post the entire poll since it will be the midway point of the season and also let everyone know how the bowl match-ups are shaping up to that point.

Hey, the controversy's cool and all, but I think you could still make it a little more fair, and have no trouble with people losing interest. I mean when you have a 2-4 team ahead of a 6-0 team, it's gone past cute controversy, and crossed over into making the games meaningless.

I think that just because people didn't bother to post doesn't mean you shouldn't change it a little. Why don't you just go with the 50/25/25 plan, and at least make it reasonable.

Also, about the forfeits. The last component's supposed to measure strength of schedule, but it actually rewards people whose opponent forfeited, which would be about the easiest schedule possible. Instead of making forfeits a 0 for the person who got it, and a max score for the person who went against them, why don't you just make it the lowest number anyone got that week in both ways.

That way, the person whose opponent forfeited would get punished a little bit, but it wouldn't throw off their whole ranking, and someone whose team forfeited before they took over would get punished, but they'd still have a chance to turn their season around.

I'll second that, and not just because I'm 4-2. Wins should count for more than 1/3 of the total if only because Strength Of Schedule doesn't mean as much as the results of the games.

The way the current BoredCS poll is set up, I could lose all of my games this year, score somewhat decently, and still be in contention at the end of the year if my schedule had included Stanford, Minnesota, Boise State (using Vern's picks), Virginia, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Hawaii, etc.

You may want to try several different versions of the formula that give more weight to wins than anything else.

My preferred version would probably be 50% for the win/loss record, 30% for your correct pick percentage, and 20% for your opponents' correct pick percentage.

At this point I'm not going to change it and again not enough people wanted change to justify changing the formula in the middle of the season. Besides what matters in the end is who is #1 and #2. Both Edwin and Vern have been among the best at picking games and they are tied for the toughest "schedules." BTW the using 50/25/25 formula would give little difference in the results:

1. Virginia

2. Minnesota

3. Ohio State

4. Notre Dame

5. Syracuse

6. Stanford

7. Washington State

8. West Virginia

9. Oklahoma

10. Oregon

Teke's 50/30/20 suggestion would have also produced the exact same rankings.

Hey it is weird having a 2-4 team ranked in the Top 10 but Will has picked well and faced tough competition. But if he he doesn't start winning some of the games he's not going to get to the Top 2. My guess is to play for the championship you have to go at least 9-4 and I don't see too many people putting up 10-3 or 11-2 records since we're already down to five teams with one loss or less.

Not to press the issue, but I think the fact that it wouldn't change too much is a good thing. That way, we could get rid of the ridiculous anamolies, (#8 Hawaii at 2-4 and #10 Stanford at 6-0), and still leave the bulk of the ratings the same.

I really don't think anyone would complain if you did it, and since we are only half way through the season, it would be the perfect time to make a change.
