Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 4, 2004 Saints: McKenzie acquired for draft pick and prospect by Fanball Staff - Fanball.com Monday, October 4, 2004 News The Saints acquired cornerback Mike McKenzie on Monday for a second-round pick and No. 3 quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan, according to Fox Sports' reporter Jay Glazer. The league must still approve the deal before it will become official. McKenzie was inactive for the Packers on Sunday and did not even watch the game from the sidelines. The Packers have lost three consecutive games since he returned for a lengthy contract holdout. Views The Saints refused to give in to the Packers' demands for a first-round pick in exchange for McKenzie, but they did part with O'Sullivan, whom they were high on. It's worth noting that the last time the Packers acquired a No. 3 quarterback from an NFC South team, the guy turned out to be okay. Perhaps you've heard of him. His name is Brett Favre, and he was acquired via trade with the Falcons following the 1991 season. It's also worth noting that the GM at the time was Ron Wolf, not Mike Sherman who couldn't draft his way out of a paper bag..err, so to speak. Why does this totally reek of throwing in the towel for the season and building for the future? 1-3 is certainly not a deathwish. From what I recall, Dungy's Bucs almost always started terrible in September and always started picking up midseason and close to the playoffs, as has been the case with Sherman's Packers like the inaugural 9-7 campaign in 2000, and last year's 10-6 was the same way as well. I think this will help the Saints tremendously, not counting the debacle last week in Arizona, I feel that they're probably the best team in the NFC South, besides maybe Atlanta and that new defense... Who is now being coached by former Packer defensive coordinator Ed Donatell. Firing him has proved to be an immensely stupid move thus far.

Guest Flyboy Report post Posted October 4, 2004 The Packers got raped, it'll just be interesting to see what would happen if Brooks went down. The Saints already lost a damn good QB in Delhomme, watch Sullivan comes into GB and flourishes. My luck.
Guest GreatOne Report post Posted October 4, 2004 Not that JT O'Sullivan is in the same time zone as Brett Favre but I don't understand the bitching here. You have a malcontent who really doesn't wanna play for you, get rid of him. Especially when your team's gone from 'world-beaters'--in which he returned the next day--to alsorans in three weeks. So basically his value to you and your leverage--which is what everyone seems to forget--are both shot and you just do what you can in that case. No 'major team screwing here', sorry.....................
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted October 4, 2004 What choice did the Packers have? McKenzie was a problem. Also i don't think it's a coincidence that the Packers only win was when McKenzie was sitting out.

No 'major team screwing here', sorry..................... I totally agree with getting rid of McKenzie, but this trade reeked of desperation. It has nothing to do with the win-loss record.. If Sam Madison or Patrick Surtain wanted to be traded from an 0-3 Dolphins squad, you'd bet the Dolphins would try and get a good deal from it. Then again, I find this move somewhat peculiar considering Craig Nall is the exact same age as JT O'Sullivan and in my opinion, the likely successor to Brett Favre. He's got many of the same intangibles.. leadership (in the preseason, the guys seem to trust him), mobility, and the huge arm strength. So my assumption is that they might finally be realizing how terrible Pederson is and want a new backup. And yes, while McKenzie was a problem, it's not like they *HAD* to trade him no matter what. Why couldn't they address a defensive line concern in the trade? It's not like the Saints were the only ones pursuing McKenzie.. The Seahawks, Chiefs, and Raiders were also all after him. yankovic fan 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2004 Man, I was high on O'Sullivan during preseason too. He had a great season in NFL Europe, and just looked promising. Maybe McKenzie can finally plug the leaky New Orleans defense. Watching them lose to the Cardinals, while it angered me, it did not surprise me. Nothing surprises me anymore with the Saints. Heck, two years ago they were doing above average, and looking to secure a playoff spot and then they sputtered against the 1-13 Bengals. And yet I still cheer for them. What the heck? And I hope Favre is ok after the New York game. (both physically and mentally)

Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 5, 2004 Believe it. ...The Saints have long been the strongest suitor for his services, but this past week the Raiders and Seahawks called the Packers and jumped into the fray. However, neither team was willing to go with a second rounder and a player who the Packers wanted... OK, so maybe I was wrong about the Chiefs but hey they could use him too. This comes from the Sporting News' report on the trade: http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3059000
Guest GreatOne Report post Posted October 5, 2004 Unless they plan to let Lucas go next year (a possibility with Hasselbeck, Alexander, and Jones all up) I can't see it. But it's moot now, thank god.
Guest El Satanico Report post Posted October 9, 2004 You'd think they could've also got a 4th or 5th rounder in this or next years draft. Regardless, they wouldn't have taken this deal if they could've got a better deal.
