Guest BrokenWings Report post Posted October 18, 2004 I admit to not knowing much about Puro, but Samoa Joe just posted this on his journal this evening, and I felt people could come here to wish luck to the man or share memories. If anyone hears more, please add it to this thread. My prayers are with him, as this is a horrible situation. If anyone could give me some background information on Hoshi, it'd be greatly appreciated as well. Here's what Joe said on the matter: "Hey, Just a quick plea for those who are spiritual. A good friend and fellow pro wrestler from ZERO ONE Naohiro Hoshikawa has recently fell into a bad situation. He collapsed at a show and fell into a coma requiring massive brain surgury and the prognosis does not look good. Please if you have the prayers and heart to spare keep him in your thoughts. I just got home from chicago and this has sort of floored me. I hope you get well Hoshi, make it back you have always been a fighter."
Ced 0 Report post Posted October 18, 2004 More info courtesy of puroresupower.com Only two Japanese newspapers, Sports Nippon and Nikkan Sports, reported the following story. The newspaper said that Naohiro Hoshikawa was taken to the hospital after his singles match with Tatsuhito Takaiwa on Sunday in Sapporo. A craniotomy (opening of the skull) was performed to try to stop internal bleeding. Hoshikawa went into a coma and his body is in a paralyzed state. Hoshikawa and Takaiwa were involved in a Jr. title match inside of a 10-foot high steel cage. Takaiwa powerbombed Hoshikawa from the cage and lariat'd him for the finish. Hoshikawa started snoring immediately (sign of bleeding of the brain). Ohtani, Takaiwa, Nakamura, and ring announcer/manager Okita stayed at the hospital to check on Hoshikawa. The initial diagnosis is that Hoshikawa's head trauma was a result from an accumulation of repeated head blows, first from the 10/2 show in Ishinomaki and then the 10/3 Korakuen Hall show. However, Hoshikawa lost consciousness in the 10/17 match when he fell back on the mat from Takaiwa's lariat head-first and didn't protect himself. These types of incidents are much more commonplace in Japan than is let on, especially in pro-wrestling schools in the industry. I figured it was some sort of head shot, but the initial diagnosis being multiple head shots kinda shocked me. I strongly doubt he'll ever be in the capacity to wrestle again, but hopefully the guy at least pulls through and will be able to recover enough to live a normal life. SinToxic 0 Report post Posted October 18, 2004 Oh man, that's the last thing I wanted to hear. I'm a big Hoshikawa fan and this is just painful to hear. The guy is only 29 years old with unseen potential. I wish him all the best and speedy recovery. Takaiwa must be feeling pretty bad right now.
Hunter's Torn Quad 0 Report post Posted October 18, 2004 This isn't the kind of news you ever want to wake up to. I've not seen a lot of Hoshikawa's work, but I liked it a lot, and his style is one I enjoy. This unfortunate incident reminds me of what happened with Masakazu Fukuda, and that one was worse for me, because I'd actually been able to see Fukuda live. Let's hope and pray that this situation has a happy ending.
Guest Black Tiger Report post Posted October 18, 2004 I hope Hoshikawa turns out okay, and I also hope that Takaiwa doesn't leave the business over it. He's been a longtime favorite and one of the reasons I got into Z1 at all. No question it was injury built up over time. I've seen Hoshikawa take a few nasty looking head bumps before, so its not like Takaiwa went out and mauled him in the match.
Guest Dynamite Kido Report post Posted October 18, 2004 Hopefully he can pull out of it and be able to live a normal life. It's so sad to see things like this happen to people in general, especially when it happens to wrestlers(they put their lives on the line for OUR entertainment....and of course to make a living). I haven't seen a ton of his work, but I did enjoy what I did see. Simply shocking that this would happen to someone so young with so much to live for.....my heart goes out to him for his recovery and return(hopefully) to a normal life.
