Which brought you more glee in 2004?

Since I'm jaded as hell about the Cubs, I didn't want the Sox to even advance to the NLCS, so clearly it's the Pistons. On top of that, being from Michigan, I can't help but take a little bit of pride in seeing a team that was god-awful a decade ago absolutely bitchslap around the NBA's version of the Evil Empire; in a fashion that went against the current NBA formula of star players and ball-hogs getting all the glory. Not a single bonafide superstar on the Pistons squad, yet they destroyed the Lakers.

 

And unlike the Sox/Yankees series, virtually nobody (myself included) thought the Pistons had a chance of winning two games in the series, let alone the series, itself. What the Sox did was uncanny, but they were clearly the better team; while the Pistons were ultimately the better team, it was more like watching Miracle in that series. Even when they were winning, you didn't possibly think they could hold on.

I think the Wallaces could have something to say about that, especially seeing as how Big Ben is on the cover of ESPN NBA 2k5, which my Xbox (apparently a Lakers fan) is reluctant to play no matter which copy I use, yet seems to play every other game just fine.

I certainly am. But I've never developed a deep hatred for a team simply because they are winners.

My hatred for the Yankees has little to do with their being 'winners'. Steinbrenner alone is reason to root against the Yankees. Growing up with egomaniacal players like Reggie Jackson & Dave Winfield on the team is another good reason. The never ending fellatio that the media gives the team now is another reason. Their inflated payroll is another reason. The sheer obnoxiousness of a lot (but not all) of their fans is yet another reason.

Have you watched ESPN. The Red Sox bias is so obvious. The Yankees are treated like the "evil empire" while the Red Sox are the heroic underdogs.

 

That would mean you don't like the Red Sox either. They can more than old their own in terms of obnoxious fans.

Gotta agree, when the Red Sox are trying to get A-Rod but they can't do it, it kind of makes their 'Evil Empire' theory fall flat.

I think alot of people hate the Yankees because they have a cocky and arrogant owner compared to "they win". No one hated the 49ers or the Lakers (unless ur from Sac town) like people hate the Yankees. Lots of teams win alot, the Yankees are hated above all for more than just winning.

Most fans are not smart enough to even hate them for that reason. People who hate the Yankees, and I live in NY, so there are a ton of them (even here), will just say because they suck. Because they always win, and they buy this and that. Not because of the owner.

How can you not hate Kobe Bryant? And I don't see anyone hating on the Patriots and they are better than both the Lakers and the Yankees.

I don't hate Kobe at all, in fact he's one of the main reasons I love the Lakers. It's great to watch him go apeshit when he gets inside the paint and still somehow come away with a bucket.

 

Personally, I don't really judge any athlete by what they reportedly do off the field, since you never really know the circumstances behind what's going on. Seems you hear a little too much of that with Kobe and the whole rape trial (which by the way ended up being called off, yet everyone seems to still conveniently forget that and continue with the OMG RAPIST~ sentiments).
